In this video we'll be learning about wire! It may seem overwhelming but once you know about gauges and types of wire, you'll be able to choose the right wire for your jewelry projects! Great info on wire. I use aluminum floral wire (dollar tree) only for earrings bc its not directly in skin. I also like parawire copper coated. Great colors and doesnt tarnish. I haven't used pure copper wire yet. Tfs

Loved your video, thank you!!! I never thought to save my sterling silver scraps (for melting them down), how do you do this? I never heard of this before, but that would be a smart thing- assuming it doesn't cost you a lot to have someone melt it down for you?? Could you please tell me how you go about this?

I was wondering if you ever used the company RioGrande wire, and if so, what you think of their product? I have heard a lot of jewelers use them. Also, have you ever used silver or gold filled wire as a middle ground? I love the tarnish resistant wires mentioned- except when you cut them and can see the middle core (especially for wire wrapped bead and stones); the bigger the gauge, the bigger the copper core color you will see after cutting the wire! What is your experience with this?

I have a friend to takes her broken pieces to a jeweler to melt so you can try getting a price from your local one.
I have heard of RioGrande wire and I also see many jewelry designers use it but every time I price it from other companies it is more expensive. The best craft wires I have used for wire wrapping is Parawire, and Designs Wire. In regards to the copper core. I use the silver plated wire. You can barely see the core when you buy the silver plated wire. Even if you order color silver plated wire and you scrape it with your pliers for example, you'll see the silver instead of copper.
I don't use silver or gold filled wire because it brings up my cost but I will use it or silver wire if the customer asks for it and price it higher.

I agree about the RioGrande wire- it is always so expensive that I settle for what you do too!! 😂 I have used sterling silver and wanted to try the middle ground of silver filled, but of course, use that for myself, those special gifts, and others that prefer to pay more for a higher quality metal.

Sorry for a second comment but I forgot to ask if wire described as ‘craft wire’ can be used for jewelry making or is it better to stick with wire that is specifically identified as jewelry wire?

In regards to the craft wire, make sure you know what it's made of and what it's coated with. Some craft wires will not have any coating and will tarnish. They might also have lead or nickel because they are not made for jewelry but for other types of crafts that won't be worn. But Soft Flex's artistic wire, for example, is actually called craft wire and is safe for jewelry making. That's why I say to check and see what it's made of and if it will not tarnish.
