If water is slipping by the glass it has a perfect route to go into the backlight layers due to water tension. Anyways the real reason they used adhesive is because of various advantages, not just because apple is greedy.

    The solution: dont reinstall the screw near the power button cable when reinstalling the logic board. You will have plenty of screws holding the board in place, but if that screw is pinching the cable then that screw can stay out

  • @jesusyuca1483
    @jesusyuca1483 Před 4 lety +129

    I repaired so many of these. When you lifted the metal plate that has all the screws you need to push the board down near the flex cable is soldered or you tear it like you did the first time you opened it. Also removing the board and battery with the copper back part helps not mess up the battery. My specialty was replacing the charging port because nobody on this island could do it.

      There isn't really any other way to take the batterys out on iPod Touches, there aren't any pull tabs and the adhesive is a bit overkill for such a small battery, he should have used a plastic tool though, you can sometimes slice through the layers of a battery if you use a metal tool and that can be pretty dangerous.

The first time lifting the metal plate and the second time connecting the digitizer. He messed up the battery when he could have lifted it with the copper back. He fucked up the speaker by not being careful or using a little heat. Even his solder joints didn’t look that good.

    Thank you for this video, Hugh. I recently had to lift up the rear seats in a car I bout a couple years ago. I found an 8 gb iPod touch under there. It was all grimy and dirty, but after a wipe down it cleaned up ok. I plugged in a charger I had. At first it didn't do anything. I waited for it to charge up enough to power up, but nothing. Eventually I unplugged the charger, and pushed it in and out of the charger port, wiggling it as I did. Eventually it powered up, but as soon as I unplug it, it shuts down. I was looking to see how hard it would be to change the battery. This video has shown me that it's not worth it. If I want to use it, I will have it plugged in, in my car or something.

    This happened to me as well! When I took the cable out it had a small mark on the cable inside the ribbon. I found out that it was long screw damage witch was very weird because I knew I had used the correct screw. I replaced the cable and didn'd screw in the screw above the cable, and it worked. I screw in the screw as much as I could before it got tight, and it worked fine. So I believe Apple used a screw that's to long for the spot.

I still managed to retrieve all the pictures I had on it at least, I ended up buying another one for around $20USD a few months ago and it’s in surprisingly great condition for being used given it’s age. Me too when I was 9 but unfortunately it died in the middle of me playing a game and i got angry and slammed it on a bunk bed pole and the screen cracked real bad and the charging hole was damaged so we had to put it back to normal by pushing it hard with something and I was still able to use it all tho the damage was just getting worse and worse like small bits of the screen were breaking off then the home button came off so I had to put tape on it to keep it on then the whole screen was coming off like in this video where he had the screen up and it was still able to work surprisingly and the screen was even turning white and flickering already then one day it was in my pocket and my father sprayed me with the water hole's then i ran inside to see if it was alright and it didn't work no more the water got into it ): and this was in 2012 ya pretty long ago /:

    Good job hugh. I tried to repair mine. The soldering part is very critical. At first it was ok. But power button not working the next day. It was on and off when i keep on solder the cable. After 1 week of soldering i let it rest for good.

    Somehow I managed to replace the screen on it while in high school. I used normal hairdrier to take it apart, also broke and replaced that flatflex cable, and didn't have good glue to keep new screen properly in place. But it worked.
    Definitely removed motherboard in process. I remember that thin strip of pcb keeping two halves together and bending it to take board out, luckily didn't break it

    I used to work on mobile repair between 2013-2017. The first few devices I worked on was this iPod touch 4th gen since in 2013, that device is widely used.
    They're bane to my existence and the primary reason I get a lot of angry returning customers. Also the 5th/6th gen iPod touch are nightmare as well. The only other device I have the hardest time is the HTC One M7 (2013).
    I'm a software developer now. But I miss and don't miss mobile repair career. Maybe I can do some side hustles for fun later on.

    Glad I found this video. I got my first haul of iPhones to practice repairs and the iPod 4th Gen looked so meek and simple I figured I'd pratice on that first. Then I saw this video. I'll now probably start with the iPhone 4 or 4s. Any suggestions on the most reliable vendor for gold plated/solid replacement chassis?

    That is so weird! I have done screen repairs on an iPod Touch 4th gen before and I haven't had an issue with the power button... However I did have a home button issue with an iPhone 4 after replacing the screen and found out the issue was it needs to be seated in a certain way or the screen will clamp down on it and preventing it from being able to depress.

    as an general tip which I do not see very often (and honestly I dont know why...): Before trying to remove the battery for example, get an small syringe and draw up some ethanol... Even normal hand disinfection fluid will do it. Just put a litte bit on every side of the battery. wait 1-2 mins and the ethanol will start to make the gluestripes soft. You can than lift one side up a little bit and again put some fluid underneath it. Doing it like this will let you remove any glued part as smooth as possible. And dont think too much about, that ethanol could damage anything. Thats not the case. Anything else used in such devices does withstand it really well.

    These are a walk in the park to repair. I've repaired hundreds of them. The hardest part was getting bent ones sealed back up properly. Pull the WiFi cable away from the white plastic thing it's stuck to. Once that's done, it will allow you to fully pull the motherboard away on an angle from the housing. Just enough to get a full finger behind it to snap in the digitizer cable.

    The contacts for the power flex cable could be grounding out on the mid plate. Pretty sure that’s why there was gunk over the contacts when you removed the flex cable initially.
    I feel your pain though, always end up breaking something when trying to repair one of these iPods.

  • @rickapplequist6078

    It looks like you didn’t cover the solder connections on the board with kapton tape so the metal plate is now shorting out the soldered connections when the screws are tightened. Great video.

    I have one of these and I decided to open it up one day just to see. That latch that you have to press down before laying the screen down is hell, it took me SO LONG to put that down and it took FOREVER to get it back in place. I didn't even replace anything, I just opened it, to hell with that.

  • @jamesvalentine925
    @jamesvalentine925 Před 4 lety

    When you removed the power button cable you mentioned that it had something sticky over it. Could the connections be shorting on the metal frame that screws down on top of it. If that's the case then it would explain why it worked before the shield was screwed down.
