- Not sure the exact island where this landing is located but it looks like they've been doing it for a while! People, cars, trucks all manage to disembark and load with crazy waves all around.
Amazing. As a former US Navy member and former boater in the Pacific Northwest, I take my hat off to this Captain and his crew (ground crew included). In our so-called civilized world where we all want to be protected from the ravages of nature, there will always be a need for brave men and women who can get things done when the going gets tough. Excellent seamanship! The residents of these islands are indeed fortunate to be served by such brave and competent seamen.

In reality, though, the Mediterranean is a poodle compared to the North Atlantic and the North Sea. Greek ferry captains are usually scared shitless when confronted with waves that are perfectly normal in these waters.

Parked it like a boss... These sea commuters are so highly dependant on these ferry services that any trip cancelation would be disastrous. Thumbs up for job done.

Our country has so many remote islands,with so many people waiting for a ship twice,or even once a week...So it's our duty to dock the ship no matter what.Considering the danger,there hasn't been an accident for many years.We are familiar with these wheather conditions and those small ports.

Everyone is an arm-chair sailor! The guys handling the lines were excellent. The skipper and his XO deserve a good bottle of brandy and a box of cigars for a brilliantly executed manoeuvre! Plus, just be reminded, they all get shit pay for being skilled seamen a lifeline on and off the island.
Absolutely. Hence I said these guys are brilliant. Deft judgment of that magnitude in seas like that is fully excellent. When I first saw the start of the video, I said, "Oh no Skipper...not today". But he did it with a brilliantly deft touch.

I am heckuva impressed. By the ferry skipper, the dockside crew who were magnificent, and not least of all the intrepid passengers/drivers, who were really gutsy! Good on you all, guys.
The Greek sailors commuting between the islands,in the winter, are true seamen. They know the currents,the reefs, and how tricky the Med can be, in any season. They don´t fuss about. They just get the job done. Same as the OLYMPIC pilots, flying in the Autum/Wintertime. Most landings have 20min. of turbulence. (Is that the word?) I´ve done it a few times. Usually I don´t mind, but when the Airhostess start screaming, I get a little aprehensive. :o)

Considerable respect for an amazing sea faring nation. These dockers where obviously trained by those that were involved with the Anzio & D-Day landings! They stood there ground & performed a minor miracle, along with the captain relying upon his experienced crew to bring the vessel in with amazing skill between them. I bet that many viewers could not manage the same feat, given the conditions being operated under!
a few years ago I spent summer backpacking around the Greek islands and was astonished at the speed these ferries turn round and they run on time. at least in good summer weather
now that is called TEAM WORK! ......with a lot of EXPERIENCE my friends!
There is still hope for our world. The ferry had to make a call in this port and the Master decided this could be done in the prevailing conditions. And it was. This shows judgement, ability and hard work still have a place. HiViz jackets and pathetic rules enforced by the wankers in H&S are luxuries our world can do without. Well done the Greeks!
I have been on this exact ferry at this exact port many times and it is spectacular to watch every time. This instance isnt even close to the most difficult dockings I have seen there. The ground crew is equally qualified and the locals getting on and off have a system and watch the surf, its now or next week!

MsMontec, if you would live on an island and you will have to come home or to go somewhere else, you'd not talk like that. Too bad you can't see how the ferry docks in the island of Mykines in the Faroe Islands. People have to jump on board, there is no ramp, no nothing. One must be living on an island to actually nderstand it is not always facile or "safe".
When people dare risk so much to serve society ( mind that this island has no other conectin with the main land) they do not do a simple job. In this case, a proper and professional attitude is that you do not risk a ship, crew and passengers ... but ... Duty designate Greek seafarers and not a simple professionalism, just as those who defy the risk in front of duty. These people We don;t call them professionals or capable, we call them heroes. You may find this word heavy, but if there is any disaster, the system, the journalists and the insurance companies will crucified capt and hiw crew, and then Captain LIGNOS WILL have on his side all the native people tht served all this yhears not with simple aprofessionalism but with self-denial and high sense of duty, that;s heroism.
I never cease to be amazed by the chaotic scenes of Greek ferries loading/unloading. Trucks, cars, motorcycles, pedestrians all embarking and disembarking at the same time! A far cry from the "Health and Safety" culture of Northern Europe. You wouldn't see anything like that at Dover or Calais! With weather even half as bad, the services would be cancelled.

Corrosion, or an oxygenation layer, need to provide passivization. It does for aluminum. It doesn't for iron and steel unless chromium is added. .

This is the tiny jetty at Agnontas on Skopelos Island. Fantastic seamanship that you see every day on the Greek Islands, they are ship masters of the highest calibre. This little jetty on the South is the number 3 alternative to the main ports of Skopelos Town on the East and Glossa on the North West. On bad weather days, when leaving the island, you have to check which port your ferry might be forced to use - and then find a a taxi fast!

Its not about skill or balls its about recklessness and gross endangerment to life. The captain and shipping company are placing employees, and customers alike in significant danger. Even simple things like mandating life jackets for those on the dock and at risk of being swept into the sea are not done. Its a "third world" approach and self justification to placing money before safety. They should be investigated and fine or put out of business be the international maritime organization for these significant and heinous breaches in law. You would not be claiming the "need" for food as an excuse for these actions, if your son, daughter or wife were swept out to sea and drowned, I assure you!

We are not a rich country...we have 100s inhabited islands that must be serviced and we simply can't build proper facilities to all of them for various reasons such as very few inhabitants, not enough money or very deep waters...majority of those block piers were hardly installed on the rocky descending coast...
The Captains have to berth the vessel in order to bring supplies and medicines...winter time only ships can approach not even helicopters due to the strong winds prevailing in Aegean sea!
Islanders are familiar with this kind of fast loading unloading process and they are very thankful and admiring the captains and crew of those vessels....its their lifeline!

Yes, most Greek islands are under serviced and with limited or non existent access to proper means of transportation via sea or air, connection with the mainland suffers. I know because I'm originally from one of these small islands.
But this is no excuse to act irresponsibly and risk lives.
That "whatever" mentality that many Greeks have must be put to an end and start doing things the right way.
We brag a lot about the ancient Greeks and fair enough we have a good reason for it, ancient Greeks were simply magnificent, so how about we start acting like them once for a change?

And all of those people leaving alone on those islands are waiting
every day needs even doctors etc from these ships. It is very easy to

In Croatia we make piers as a protection from south winds. Kimnos port is totally open to worst storms. It is an infrastructure problem luckily solved by the superskilled crews :)
Each of those vehicles which had their wheels immersed in salt water up to the brake shoes may have brake problems later$$$ spent later. Been there, done that.

You have to submerge your whole car in a pool of circulating clean water if you want a slim chance of no electrical or mechanical problems down the road. Idiots!! But, your on an island, you just don't have a choice, like those people, because if you don't get to work, you don't eat.
+dawn lewis depends on the car really. salt water is bad but its not that bad. my leaf? i wont let that near sw spray. my old jeep? it was lifted 4" with 31's little salt water did nothing to it. spray it down oil some parts etc.. and your good. 497,000 miles when i sold it no rust. you do have to be carrful especially if you splash or go deep enough where you have hidden cavities with sitting salt water. will corrode metals really fast.

+Jon B No it is very good practice. What he is doing is is attaching the bow (forward ) line. He is then engaging forward gear and as the boat cannot move forward the stern of the ship is carried in against the dock. They then attach the stern line.
To do it in a boat this size is something. You need a really strong bollard !

Not much choice really for the small islands. In the winter bad weather can go on for months. At some point they need to get supplies, go see doctors etc.
Old fashioned seamanship. Probably done pretty often, but us lubber knees knock at the sight of a wave big enough to surf.

its a very small greek island with just 250 people living on it and the boat aproach just twice a week during the summer and twice a month during the winter .Locals are the heroes that they still stay there

Wow! Amazing ship handling and pier work by those people. IF that is a fairly frequent occurrence it might make some sense to raise the level of the pier by at least one meter. That would require the entire approach road to have and angle change also, so it would be an expensive project.

during the winter, it could take over a week for weather to calm down, and people need to run urgent matters too.
there are not a lot of public services on these islands.
besides, if the coast guard allowed the ship to do the trip, it means there is no danger.
I assume you're not from Europe. Greek islands are not at all remote. In fact, I don't think there's anywhere in the Aegean Sea where there isn't a direct line of site to the mainland. Also, even during winter the Mediterranean doesn't get rough for days on end. 12 hours after this video was recorded the sea conditions could well have been completely different.
Do you actually believe that there is no danger simply because the coast guard didn't stop them? Surely you can see with your own eyes that there was a very real danger of being washed off the jetty into the sea.
