I would highly recommend this movie. I’ve seen it a few times. The first time I was very young and it made a fan out of me. I’ve never seen anything at all even close to this film.

The only thing “crappie” is your taste in film. “Parapluies” was awarded the Palme d’Or at Cannes, nominated for 5 academy awards, and ranked as one of the top 100 non English language films by a BBC Culture critics’ poll.
You haven't understood the film, the story, the time when France sent young men by force to Algeria to look after the natives. The separation, no news for the loved one left behind in France. The letters that never arrive. Marriage to another. And finally, the return of the wounded young man.
Another era you've certainly never experienced, and good for you... Beautiful film. Sad, especially the ending.
And, of course, Michel Legrand's marvelous musical composition and the direction of Jacques Demy's masterpiece.
