“J-Pouch” is a surgical treatment for patients of all ages with ulcerative colitis (UC) or Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).
A J-pouch is a J-shaped reservoir surgically created out of a patient's small intestine as a way to store and pass stool. Sometimes, conditions such as chronic ulcerative colitis, cancer or other colorectal diseases make it necessary to remove the colon (large intestine) and rectum, and doctors need to create another way for solid waste to exit the body.
This medical animation shows how a J-pouch is created.
