- He has performed all over the world, with artists from Aretha Franklin and Merle Haggard, to Mick Jagger and Van Morrison - but he always finds his way back to Massachusetts. Before he was the frontman for the J. Geils Band-turned-chart-topping solo artist, Peter Wolf was Woofa Goofa - the "all night" DJ at Boston's legendary rock station, WBCN. Jim Braude was joined by Peter Wolf, ahead of a special New Years Eve show at the Cabot theater in Beverly.
Peter Wolf is without a doubt one of the best frontmen I’ve seen live. J.Geils Band was a simply amazing live band.
One of the greatest frontmen in history.
That man is severely under appreciated in this world.
Absolutely true
You said SO much with so few words !!
Yes-THAT is a fact!! Major talent and performer!
Nobody was better LIVE than the Geils Band ... Nobody !!!
I concur
I heard that
True Story!!!
Agree
“Full House” - one of the most intense live albums of all time 👍
Yesssss!
cut.... it..... out
I heard that
On my third copy:

One of my favorite singers Peter Wolf. True class act.
One of the greatest stage presences I ever had the pleasure of watching.
Ain’t nothin’ but a house party Pete! One of the best front men ever.
Saw Thorogood and J Geils open for the Stones in ‘81 at Candlestick in SF! Might have been the best concert out of hundreds and hundreds that I’ve seen! Peter Wolf is without peers as a frontman for any rock outfit ever 🎸🎸
I was there too my friend..one of the days. For some reason my Red ticket is the only old concert ticket I don't have anymore. Dunno what happened...but no matter - I can still see Wolf use that mic stand like a pole vault!!🤘😎🤘
I had to see George and Journey in stead of J Geils on that Stones tour at JFK STADIUM IN PHILLY
I saw George Thorogood in some huge club on LA's Miracle Mile. He was fantastic and never stopped. He was more hard-working than James Brown.
@@frankperricone2065 I saw Henry Paul and Van Halen open for the Stones in Orlando.
I've seen the J. Geils Band more times than I can recall. In the early 70's they played the Central Florida area at least two of three times a year and I wouldn't miss a show if at all possible. They always put on a high energy show and in my opinion are one of the best live bands ever.
SIR YES SIR!!,!,!,
Ditto here in Detroit. They always hit Detroit, & I never missed them. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen them.
Same thing in the 80’s here in Toledo..
Never missed a show because their live performances were worth the price
@@peach495 How else ya gonna do the Detroit Demolition....

For some reason audiences love to hear famous musicians say the name of their city. You gotta admit that was a pretty clever one. I love the song he does it in anyway but for some reason I still like that moment within the song even after all these years.
He's so underrated. He's a true legend.
Always loved Peter Wolf and the J. Geils Band.
They had tons MORE than their 15 minutes of fame.
Best live band ever
DAMN STRIGHT
I went to at least 6 J Geils shows at Boston Garden back in the 70's. There was general admission so everybody had a chance to be in the front row closest to the stage. We held up lighters instead of cell phones. Great rock and roll bands from Boston then. You could see Peter Wolf at Boston rock clubs or just walking down Newbury Street or in Kenmore Square. Good times, the Best Times
Yup . We shared dealers too .
@@classygary : Car dealers, right? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I agree with Tom Petty; "Don't Do Me Like That" is a perfect song for Peter Wolfe. I can instantly hear his voice singing it.
For sure, it would have been perfect for him.
I thought he was so great in J.Geils and now so many years later, I'm falling in love with his speaking voice. So nice to hear him..
I whole heartedly concur Jim - Peter MUST write a book ! From his early exploits with the Hallucinations and J. Geils Band to his extensive solo career - He is a story teller and needs to tell HIS - I actually have dreams that I'm in a book store and I come across an Autobiography written by Mr. Wolf - THE most humble and sincere "wild man" to ever bless us with his talents !
I was working at the prudential building , night shift, and he was a DJ at WBCN on the 50th floor. I would always meet him on the freight elevator. A cool cat for sure!!
Listened to WBCN when it first started up, and Wolf was brilliant in introducing us to new, excellent music. The J. Geils Band was the best party band ever.
The Combat Zone was a great area to go party as college kids.
Not as good as the Combat Zone in Taipei! A close second!
How is it humanly possible for the J Geils Band not to be in the rock and roll hall of fame?
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is stupid
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a fuckin joke.
One song.. Angel in Blue certifies the BS
Love Peter 🐺❤️ Wolf..
My first album was their Give it to Me! Red plastic so cool!
Heard him many times I in Boston area when I lived there.
Sounds great and looks even better
Thank you Peter for all the good music and rocking times
Album was actually called Bloodshot...thus the red vinyl. Some of my coming of age music. I still remember playing this for my girlfriend, thinking I was clever. "Give It To Me" had only one meaning at the time.
Great live band. Peter would be 75 now. He seems quite vibrant and sharp here.
saw him with the J Geils Band July 4th 1975 Memphis Tenn. , one of the opening bands for the Rolling Stones !
I was at that show. Long day.
"Angel in Blue" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I was a kid in '81 when it first aired and I immediately loved it. I still listen to it now and then and love it every bit as much.
Finally..someone who appreciates that great song.👍🙂
@@jeffreywebb7932 Earlier this year I was on a road trip through the southeast. We took the highway 64 causeway across the Chesapeake Bay…where they met in a bar. Of course, I played the song as I drove. In that moment 1981 and 2023 were in unison.
@@matthewcragg3607 Im just about to play it again. Its been a couple of years. Thanks for the story.
Saw him with j.giles in Detroit every time they came from 71 to 81.He loved Detroit and we loved him.l talked and looked like him..my young years inspiration ❤
Nuthin’ better than Geils in Detroit
@@kennycamaro2361 Cobo arena 76 ish fuzzy memory. Kick ass times
Blow Your Face Out!!!- still one of the best Albums - luv ya Pete
Fact
The most underrated frontman ever! Grew up in Worcester and saw J. Geils more times than I can count.
the greatest front man of ALL TIME!!
So much history in the Boston music scene.
Happy 75th Birthday Peter Wolf
He’s ROCKING that maroon jacket!
Peter wolf is the man. So many memories and some amazing tunes from a fucking amazing band. Thanks.
"Whirling Dirvish" precisely describes Peter's stage persona. Infectious groove master of ceremony. Ne-ver...a dull moment. No dead air. Takes a DJ to be slavish about that.
Peter was one of the very best live interview's for me when I was working for WAAF.
I Love Peter Wolf and J. Gail’s Band.
Saw them at least 20 times. Filmore East, Central Park, etc, without a doubt the best live rock and roll band EVER. Yes, better than the stones ! Never had any band where you danced from the first note to the last note ! Amazing guy and bank.
The Wooba Gooba lives in the city next to mine. I was sitting at a stop light once and saw him crossing the street. It was August, about 95F, sweltering hot, and he's wearing a heavy black Navy pea coat, black pants and black Trotsky-type hat. The epitome of cool.
I called a radio station back in a day and talked to him for about 3 hours. Thanks for the conversation Peter. It's a great experience.
Saw J Geils Band 35+ years ago in Tampa. Great show, fantastic musicians. Very under appreciated.
I saw the J. Geils Band in 1973 in Asbury Park and they rocked the house, I was not expecting what I got. True rockers, Peter Wolf is the man!
haha Those old Boston haunts “The Intermission Lounge” etc etc 😎
Roger Pace and the Pacemakers .Anyone remember that band !
Man I miss the J Geils Band. One of the best live bands Ive seen. Pete is an awesome front guy
Incredible talent.
I, for one, would pre-order that book and read every word once I got it. I bet Peter has some amazing stories to tell. I cannot wait to see him perform again! I hope he does another tour! I love all the old and the new music.
Saw then in 73 san Francisco..totally kicked ass!
I Loved hearing him on Thanksgiving on WBCN. God Love him. I do.
Lights Out!!
Great musician.
The voice of Freeze Frame and Centerfold. Loved it!
I’ve always thought he is the essence of cool.
Him is so cool
I discovered J Giles in the late 80's along with Peter Wolf's solo stuff because I was too young in the 70's. I've loved him ever since. Great interview.
Great interview!
💟💟💟 What a legend.
EXACTLY!!!
(Not sure about the beard though)
😷😷😷😷
I seen them twice
First on their sanctuary tour and when they opened for the rolling Stones at candlestick park and they blew the stones away
Happy Birthday Peter ! Stay Vital ❤️🙏👏🔥🌹
Just the best.....thank you boys
Peter Wolf is a true rocking gentleman!!!!!
I met Mr Wolf at The Middle East Bar in Cambridge, Mass and talked to him for about 5 minutes about music, great time!
Happy Birthday.Peter. 3/7/2020
seen these guys 2 years in a row christmas time 80-81 springfield ma.civic center great live show!!! peter wolf rocks!!!
i remember when he was on WBCN !
What a great guy wish the interview was longer
Best Dj at WBCN the vocals of J Giles Band !!! The best band ever !!!
Saw him at the Fillmore in SF around ‘72. J Geils concert. Good concert.
There's ONLY ONE Peter Wolf... Always in the ZONE too, man.😎
much love. ..To Boston.
Best dancer of the lot.
I would read it! Love you Peter!
Peter Wolf and his band I’m 65 years old the J Geils band is the greatest party man I have ever seen in my life all five times I do believe we way underpaid!!!,!, they always killed it thank you my friends from Costa Mesa California but that band always killed it thank you!!!,!! ManyThanx Brilliant
Seen him live in Northampton, MA a few times (Iron Horse/Pearl Street) some ~20-25 years ago. Always a great show. Then a few years later saw Magic Dick and J. Geils Blues Time at a lounge across from UCONN. Also, great time.
Honestly, what 4 miserable people could've possibly felt they needed to give this interview a thumbs down. Great to see PW looking fit and healthy.
Woofa Goofa with the green teeth!!! Love that band and no better front man that Peter Wolf!!
I brought mooba gooba with the green teeth to the younger generation and they ate it up. Must a got lost is a relatable song
I LOVE WOOFA GOOFA FOREVER!!! Loved him as a dj on WBCN in Boston, and even more with J. Geils band. Very talented and interesting guy. ❤️❤️
peter is the man the man and the man
Love it, I like Peter, I saw him when Johnny A was his guitarist
Damn he knew how to get the crowd going. Wamma Jamma
LET ME HERE YA DICKY!!! YES...
Best live band period!
So much respect.....Wow.
Best front man ever.
Led Zep at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium was the best concert in my life. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant would hit a joint that was thrown onto the stage and toss it back into the crowd. Four solid hours of music. 8:00 to ten, half an hour break, then continued until the fire marshall sut down the show at 12:30. The Stones and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in Cleveland are a very close tie for second.
@@gaoxiaen1 That would be an awesome memory for sure.
I would've loved to have heard the J. Geils Band take on "Don't Do Me Like That". Great interview, thanks for posting!
When I think about it, Imagine the tempo being pumped up sorta funky like "Give it to Me.Rock on!🙏😷🎵❗👀🎶
As a kid that grew up in Chelsea having Peter Wolf talk about a start in Everett…. Lucky for Everett! 😂
As a young teen living in Boston, I recall him as a DJ at wbcn.
One of the best !
1975 / WBCN / J Geils Band / Peter Wolf / That Boston in me / 2020 in Texas
GREAT ARTIST AND COOL DUDE.............
Loved the J Geils Band and Peter Wolf was one of the best frontman. A older friend of mine had Blow Your Face Out,and I was hooked. I saw them alot in mid 70's to very early 80's and when the lights went down Peter Wolf would tell everyone to come down to the stage, and I always would be in the front row. Songs like Dead Presidents and Peanut Butter,House Party, Love Stinks and Magic Dicks Harp solo Wama Jama. They were the ultimate boogie band. And Wolfs solo work was very good saw him solo at least 5 times
The "Sanctuary" tour in 78 @the Boston Garden was ridiculous, we were up in the 1st balcony & the place was literally shaking, if you didn't dance @a "J Geils" concert you was dead
I love Peter Wolf
Every story I heard of Peter is that he’s a great guy.
One unique frontman my awesome showman amongst few
where is the LOVE button here. great video
J Geils was a really cool band❤
Our band covers I NEED YOU TONIGHT , crowds still love it 😊
Greatest front man of all time. Better than Jagger or anybody
Yep, bigger than Zeppelin!
Better than Jagger? Are you insane? He was Jaggers little brother. RIP
Pete is a fantastic front man
Damn! I would read his book!!
awesome
Best frontman, bar none!!! If that book ever comes out it will be an instant bestseller.
I miss the glory days of radio. WBCN was always on the forefront of rock music and with Boston a big college city it could give bands the break to get noticed and picked up by other stations nation wide. My first live "rock concert" was J Geils in 1973 Boston Garden (the Garden), it must have been before July because I was still 12 years old. I think Traffic was headlining, but the local boys made a bigger impression on me!
My dad would pick him up from 'BCN when he was getting out of his shift. My Dad is a retired Boston Fire Chief and would pick up taxi shifts when he wasn't at the firehouse.
Quite a showman..... I saw the J. Geils band backstage at the Academy of Music in NYC back in 1972.....a show I'll never forget....he was all over the stage swinging the microphone around his head.....thought he'd kill someone in the band....
Have to think they were a bit coked up....heard that Jagger would come around backstage to cop some moves......
Listen to him on the Live album, of course he was coked up it was 1973 everyone was!
