  • Cab ride from Walsall to Water Orton via Sutton Park (approx 14 miles).
This was taken prior to 2008 since when a large amount of lineside trees were removed. The video also shows some of the older Saltley signals and the crossover points at Sutton Park old station which were all removed in April 2012.
The line was built by the Midland Railway and opened in July 1879, initially being known as the Walsall & Water Orton Railway. Passenger services lasted until January 1965 when withdrawn, the five stations between Walsall and Water Orton then being closed. Since that date the line has continued as a freight-only railway, with only the occasional passenger charter or diversion passing through.
Best viewed in small screen due to lthe low quality resolution of the video.

Excellent Gaz. I have really enjoyed watching this from the drivers perspective. Sutton Park station and Streetly crossing bring back some great memories. Thanks for posting. Clive.

Good to see the cab view through Walsall for the first time. For months I have viewed the current station and track layout as inadequate and in need of significant modification if not total replacement.
If all four tracks were present from Walsall station northwards to the junction, Rugeley passenger trains could be better separated from freight. Bearing in mind that this alignment is the freight bypass around New street...

Nice one Gaz, It's the first time I have seen the full length of this road since about 1966/67 when we used to work light engine tender first from Oxley shed to Water Orton to back on under the wall to work forward to Allscott Sugar Beet Works, which is now gone I believe, great memories, great video, thanks for sharing, it's a like, cheers...Bill

Very nice Gaz, Like Bill, I last worked over the line in 68' but apart from the obvious modern infrastructure & economy of trackwork it looks much the same....... The trees of course are 46 years older. Thanks, really enjoyed the ride, Brian.

Thanks Brian, am envious of your working knowledge of the WM routes! I should also have mentioned that Park Lane Jcn has been remodelled, the short section over Park Lane bridge is now double track again.

Glad you enjoyed Ben, good luck with the route learning. The remaining old WL (Walsall) signals will be replaced later this year.

Thanks Bill, would have liked to have hitched a lift with you back then, the stations were closed in '65 but still in situ, as would have been the boxes and semaphores...

Bostin'! This vid will be Bookmarked! A pity about that bit of rain! Thanks for sharing this - most interesting. Who nicked WL69? That was on my favourite 'spotting gantry in the 70s. If the SSR was put back in to Lichfield the Sutton Park line would have capacity for some passenger trains!

KevTheBusDriver Cheers. Not much chance of passengers on the Park line again.... I think the signals and posts were removed to the Pway dump at Walsall (the old Midland Yard), and probably gone for scrap now.

Gaz, you could have had the shovel from Portobello Junction up in to Wolverhampton High Level, while I was throwing coal off the Loco. I was the best coal man my Mom ever had, cheers...Bill

Great video. I read that there is talk of using some of the line for passenger services between Walsall and Aldridge.
What’s the music playing alongside the video?

Thanks, there's always talk of the line re-opening to passengers but nothing ever seems to be done! The music is by Chris Franke, I think it's called Pacific Coast Highway but can't remember for sure.

GWR55 cool, I thought it sounded like Tangerine Dream and that would explain why.
I have a document that was only released last week called “delivering a rail revolution for the communities” which shows a hat full of new stations in the West Midlands including Aldridge, but that will be the only station on the line and hence I’m guessing services will terminate there and only depart to the west.
