Fantastic review as always. I was really impressed with the iphone. I think the GoPro audio did sound a bit better/richer until you were riding and then the iphone wind reduction was much better surprisingly. Thanks again for all that you do on these reviews!
Yeah, I was actually really surprised by the wind results too. I didn’t expect that. I also did some ocean audio testing (how long it takes for mics to clear when first surfacing water), and it was really good then too. Didn’t quite make the cut for the video as I was trying yo keep it a bit shorter/fast paced.

You conduct the most comprehensive and useful testing I have ever seen. Well done. And this test involves the question most people ask- which should I use? Cell or dedicated camera ? One compelling difference for me is battery life between the two platforms. When I got my GoPro 10 I was very dissatisfied with battery life after being used to all day cell phone battery life.

@@bruceritchie7613 If Apple made a true action camera, and put this iPhone's technology in it, GoPro would be in trouble. Which of the two has the better stability and picture quality is debatable, but the low light capability of the iPhone 14 is what GoPro customers have been screaming for since the beginning. The only downside to such a camera would be all of the proprietary crap Apple would include and force the customer to use. I could see Apple requiring the linking of such a camera with an iPhone as necessary to get full use out of it, and there wouldn't be a standard cable port anywhere to be found on the damn thing.

For even better quality you can switch to the main sensor of the iPhone. It does incur a heavier crop though so it depends on your desired framing.
Thanks for a great comparison. I love how you mention on 8:41 that there are many more things to consider such as how you get the files off the camera. One thing I was curious about was file size efficiency. In the past, I noticed that GoPro files are absurdly huge compared to the iPhone. Are you able to share what the file size differences were between the cameras when the settings and video length were similar?
Amazing review! Congratulations! Beside those technical facts I think NOBODY WILL USE AN iPhone AS AN ACTION CAMERA. You have to be stupid if you think their camera will last long, it's pretty delicate. Even small vibrations could make a lot of damage. The compared resolution is weird +5k (GP11) vs 2.8k (iP14)... if you put it on a big screen the results will be VERY DIFFERENT. Apple did a great step with 14P (but only with the camera, all the rest is a crap)
File size efficiency really has nothing to do with the camera.
Both use h.265.
You can choose the bitrate on Gopro. Like either 50mbit or 100.
iPhone was set to 50 in the past but now I see that they've made it adaptive. So also somewhere between 50 and 100.

I looked up this video for the same reason. I was going to buy a GoPro, but after watching is I'll just get a chest mount for when I ride my bicycle.
This is a really revealing head to head! Really wanted the GoPro to outshine the iPhone but it was so close on lots of the action scenarios. The GoPro form factor obviously is a win for mounting but the iPhone is such a good all rounder now

Keep in mind that the iPhone is using voodoo to give you the results, and so the final product is pretty much baked in. The GoPro, however, is much close to the reality of the action, and far more flexible in post.

Great Job! The white balance on the GoPro underwater is definitely superior. However, in low light, it’s no question that the iPhone is clearly superior
iPhones price is also superior.
Put the files in Resolve and Gopro is even more superior.

when you start editing film like in Resolve 18 (a free version) you ned film with good qualitymaterial. Iphone video is much more compressed and the gopro files are easier to edit when it comes to colorizing and zooming in the material and not to forget stabilizing. rainmakers test is with plain filmed material.

Thanks for the info. My gut feeling on this is "Do I really want to use my phone and risk damage for action sports shots?" Wrecking a GoPro type device is painful enough but destroying your phone would be both painful and expensive. I am sure there are case uses for both but man... that's a hard sell to me given the gap between replacement costs and being down the use of my phone.
Ya, same here. Would love in theory to use my iPhone more for the action… but my gut says stay with the GoPro purely for replacement reasons
For the person doing a lot of recording of sports activity, a dedicated device makes sense. But also think of how many people don’t have or use a GoPro who will now have a lot of these features built in. Might even show them what they’re missing and get a GoPro too
You can spend the 300$ on Apple care instead of buying a GoPro

I think overall I prefer the iPhone but I’m not intending on upgrading my phone for a few years so if push came to shove I’d plump for the GoPro because it’s much cheaper, I wouldn’t worry as much about damaging it, and it has size in its favour. Tbh, even if I upgraded to the 14, I think my opinion would be the same.

Wow, pretty cool to see! I must admit that this is probably the first time I'm impressed by an iPhone. This was pretty awesome! A big part of an action camera is its formfactor and durability though, so I doubt it will replace action cameras any time soon.

Wow. If I were GoPro, I’d probably be pretty nervous. I’m not implying that the iPhone’s action camera is a direct replacement for the GoPro, but considering how good it is (I actually preferred a lot of the iPhone video compared to the GoPro), I’d imagine a lot of folks would say the 14 Pro’s action mode is more than enough. Now, I don’t know that I’d be comfortable taking my $1200-1500 iPhone on those intense outdoor activities - I’d be more comfortable using my $400 gopro for some of those things.
Anyway, awesome footage!

Indeed! Similarly, I wish for a day where those camera companies had fully connected cameras with far better user interfaces. All of the connectivity they have today is clunky, slow, and just not well designed for this decade.

GoPro really needs to improve their low light performance. In proper lighting the GoPro definitely looks better, but the low light difference is embarrassing for a dedicated camera system compared to a tiny phone camera.

Got to admit to being impressed with the IPhone 14. Apple seems to be making inroads in to areas previously the domain of specialty products. I think I just decided to upgrade my phone.
Make it comparable in price and then we might have something.
The image from both is very weak, but the sharpening of the material in the iPhone is totally useless. The image from the iPhone looks like a bad $40 Chinese camera, no image detail. To record or take a photo on hooray it's ok (as long as you don't watch it on something larger than 6 inches) - photo print? Waste of money. If I had to choose between the two - I would choose the gopro - better stabilization, a bit more details, a durable housing, suitable for attaching to a drone, more settings for the camera itself, etc. And a $20 phone is enough for me to make calls. For the price of an iPhone 14 pro, I can buy two gopros, a phone and about 4 batteries. Thanks, but the marketing of a bitten apple has brainwashed people.

I reckon for the drone mounting you will get it working if you suspend the cameras beneath the drone.
I was rushing to catch my flight (which, I almost missed) - while concurrently having to wait for the lightning to pass, however, I think with a bit more toying I can get it to work abve pretty easily. Just needed to move whole mount back a bit, but didn't have enough more zipties with me.
One thing to add is that the iPhone has much more and easier control over the shooting settings. Exposure compensation, white balance, etc. especially when third party apps start using the stabilization mode. But of course it's always about choosing the right tool for the job in the end.
The iPhone is easier because its auto. The GoPro give you far more latitude to be a better more creative photovideographer. If you're OK with what the camera give you, the iPhone is superior. However, if you prefer to retain more of the creative aspect of your footage, then the GoPro should be preferred.

Audio :
Better vlog (behind the camera) from gopro, deeper more "warm" voice. But the Iphone totally blows gopro for a front facing audio.
Iphone has better wind cancelation too.
Video :
For low light Iphone totally.
Disappointed the Iphone doesn't do 4k30 for image stabilization and there's still room for improvement but it's much appreciated that it's there !
Color wise it's tight, sometimes I prefered the gopro, sometimes the Iphone. Gopro seems a bit pink or magenta.
Gopro seems to have more contrast or less dynamic range. Look at the car shot 6:30 and the backback bottom right, can cearly see it on the iphone.
Iphone lacks a underwater mode, gopro is indeed better. (Niche scneario, I woudln't put a iphone underwater but hey)
8:11 White balance seems better on the iphone, gopro is warm.
Looking at the photos, gopro seems softer than the iphone, but imo in a good way, it's like the iphone has too much sharpening while to me the gopro looks more natural. (unless at 3x where the gorpro breaks down.)
Slow motion looks terrible on both to me. I was wondering which one was worse than the other lol. I find them both very compressed.
Overall I prefer the Iphone's look, it's brighter and seems to have more in the shadows, but maybe the gopro in flat settings would fix this?
Conclusion : The Iphone seems more usable day to day to me. I don't do much sports and don't need the high refresh rates or something durable, so something pocketable seems wiser to my use case (best camera is the one you have on you). 5.3k is nice in a action camera for further stabilization or cropping in. But if you want to get closer the iphone is better with the 3x camera instead of the 5.3k crop.
However for action and maybe fun, there's no contest gopro wins. Durability, waterproof, photography features (long exposures, planned capture, burst rate) stabilization, able to film at higher qualities with stabilization, horizon lock. It's just a clear winner.
Furthermore gopro has practical filming stuff, swappable SD card, swappable battery, maybe longer continuous recording times?, not sure the iphone has webcam mode? Id rely more on a gopro than a Iphone.
They both have their place in the world for different applications, and they both look great and id be happy with either :)

Watching this video I found myself a little disapointed with the GoPro 11. Capturing light, overall sound, image quality and details as well as High Dinamyc Range is much better on the iPhone! And I'm an Android user!
Great comparison 👍 I'm not an iphone user but i have had GoPros for a long time, so it's interesting to see that the iphone 14 is pretty damn close to what an action cam can offer. Would be a great tool to always have with you. Considering the price of the iphone though, i think i will stick to the GoPro and carry that extra 154g with me everyday and use my phone just for phone stuff😅

Yeah but i don’t think you’d want to risk your iPhone 14 pro in wet and dangerous conditions. It is interesting but a bit of a silly comparison. Not gonna be mounting my phone to my motorcycle helmet for dirt bike riding. If that thing hits a branch could get all messed up. Gopro is way more durable. Plus I am pretty sure iPhone cameras break when mounted to a vehicle.

Can I make a phone call with the GoPro? Don’t get me wrong here. I do love your videos. But this one seems a little bit far from relevant comparison. Not sure all people would like to mount their top dollar spent iPhone outside their cars (if thats the intended use case for the goPro). Even less so running with their phone like that. A for effort though.

The GoPro really surprised me here. I thought the image quality from the iPhone would be significantly better but the extra resolution from the GoPro really provides a lot of detail as long as there's plenty of light.
Indeed, they've really come a long way in ensuring the image quality is on-point, especially with the dynamic lighting range.
