Random SMW Experiment #1: Project Platform

  • I'm not sure why I put #1 in the title since I don't know if I will publish another video in the same style, but al least it'll be here for posterity lol. Sorry for the crackling noises by the way.
    This experiment was made in June 2022 and was a attempt of recreating the feeling of playing Super Mario Bros. using the SMW engine. Back in the end of 2021, I played Super Mario Bros. for Lost Players, a SMW romhack that reproduced very well the SMB gameplay (level design, physics, overall aesthetics...) which served both as an inspiration and a reference for this experiment. However, while this project is aimed at recreating the SMB gameplay, I wanted to also keep the SMW feeling by using mostly the original aesthetic (grass/cave FG/BG, original BGM) aside a few graphics from SMB made in the SMW style: for example I used the turn block from SMW instead of the brick block from SMB, the bonus area uses switch palace aesthetics instead of the cave one from SMB and so on).
    The level shown here would have been the first level (aka 1-1 in SMB) of this project and 8 worlds would have been planned. Of course, this project needs radical modifications with ASM (changing the status bar, adding a couple of sprites like SMB Bowser and many other changes) which would need a consequent amount of time that I don't have anymore. I'm not sure if I'll have the possibility to transform this experiment into something ambitious in the future, but it could maybe inspire someone to make something in the same spirit.
