      FUN FACT: You can die due to it. Because the blood in your body is aimed down, you might either: choke on your own blood, or simply die because of a lack of blood in needed areas. It takes about 2 hours.

    I visited Australia.
    I got to see the famous bench created by one convict carved into a cliff side where he was chained up.
    There is an Island in Sydney Bay where one convict was executed and left to hang for 2 years.
    Now that Island has a popular restaurant, famous for it’s ribs.........

    Many convicts were sent to the island of Tasmania off Australia. Some escaped into the jungles, most returned after encountering a ferocious striped beast. The Tasmanian tiger.

    One reason pardoned convicts didn't return in the 19th century is that conditions in Australia were much better than being poor in England. Numerous letters were sent home advising relatives to commit minor crimes, in order to get transported to Australia.

I have heard in the past that it is a complete myth that the Australian population mostly came from the Penal Colonies. I would love to hear the truth on this matter because it seems to me people would rather make jokes about Australia than actually teaching historical fact. Thank you.

    It's testament to how successful the colony was that the main reason the transportation stopped is because it stopped being a deterrent to crime but rather an enticing chance to get out of a miserable life in England. Part of the reason too was that they no longer needed the free labour.

    Of the 11 ships that made up the first fleet, the first one ( HMS Supply) arrived on the 18th, and the rest of the fleet arrived on the 19th and the 20th.

      @Jamie Nelson I know where South Australia is. It includes the city of Adelaide. Victoria was also a state of free settlers. But Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia and Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) all received convicts.
      It is estimated that approximately 20% of Australians are descended from convicts. As far as I'm aware, the country's Prime Minister is descended from a convict transported in 1788 for theft.
