This is true. Nigeria has the biggest economy in Africa but it does not usually follow that being the biggest economy it always mean to be one of the richest country in Africa. The gdp being used here is only GDP NOMINALand does not truly reflect in terms of how rich a country is. The world bank used the gdp per capita as the barometer to measure the wealth of the country. In fact the world bank did not find Nigeria as one of the top 20 riches countries in Africa using gdp per capita it remains as one of the poor countries with gdp per capita of only 2,185 almost the same with Ghana and Kenya. Nigeria has 93 million people living in extreme poverty. The top ten poorest countries in the world is in Africa and the top 20 poorest countries in the world 18 of which are in Africa one in Asia and one in Central America.

IMF forecasts South Africa to have Africa’s largest economy in 2024
    April 25, 2024

South Africa Blog South Africa News and Views

South Africa, despite continuing supply-side constraints in the power and logistics sectors, is set to reclaim its ranking as Africa’s largest economy, according to the IMF’s World Economic Outlook published in April.
South Africa’s gross domestic product is estimated to reach USD373 billion, while Egypt, which held the top position in 2023, is projected to fall to second with USD348 billion after a series of currency devaluations.
Nigeria, which led the ranking in 2022, is set to slip to fourth place with an estimated GDP of USD253 billion - behind energy-rich Algeria at USD267 billion - due to its high inflation rate, a weakening currency and the effects of recent government economic reforms.
The IMF predicted that Egypt could reclaim the top position by 2027. But it also expects the South African economy to benefit from improvements to its energy supply and plans to tackle logistical bottlenecks.

Yes of course this is an early year update..and just because the international monetary fund predicted that certain growth might happen, that doesn't mean it will surely happen..the imf also makes wrong predictions at times
