    Very informative! Is there an ideal duration for a short film? Under 10 minutes?

    • @writeforanimation
      @writeforanimation  Pƙed 2 lety +38

      Thanks, that's a great question. Technically anything under 40 min. gets considered a short film. But the average length is much shorter. I had the pleasure of speaking with many A-list writers and directors from the Animation industry and they all shared something that we might want to consider. Their advice is to keep your short film REALLY short, and here's why: 1) a short film is your best calling card to get your foot in the industry, you want as many people as possible to watch it and decision makers looking for talent are usually busy. Let's say you meet a director you admire and ask if you can send them your 10+ min. long short film, they might say yes, but it's very hard for them to find the time to sit down and watch it. 2) If you're able to create a good story that's unique and emotional in a very short amount of time (and potentially with no dialogue), it means you are a good storyteller and have something to say. 3) Especially in Animation, each minute you add increases the budget significantly, being able to have less shot to focus on, will allow you to produce better quality. I hope this helps!

    I appreciate how you interpret the short film in a neat, simple way. To be honest, this 3 acts model, or should I say, formula, really explains how Disney and Pixar Studios organize each plot together and tell stories to the audiences.
    And breaking down the short films into specific timelines to help us to better understand how the story turns!
    Thank you very much, I have learned a lot!

    • @writeforanimation
      @writeforanimation  Pƙed 2 lety

      Hi David, thank you for your comment. You’re right, and it goes beyond Disney and Pixar, you find those story points in probably 90% of good movies. There are always exceptions of course, the reason this structure works is that it’s a representation of the human experience, it’s not something that Hollywood invented, nor Joseph Campbell and not even Aristotle. I believe we’re drove to it because we’re all humans. Within this structure you can play with countless variations and still make your story unique and original. You can also decide to break the “rules”. I’m glad this video was helpful and thanks again for taking the time to comment. Let me know if you have any questions, I’m here to help :)
