  • Short film about a unique Belly Tank Hot Rod self-built by Geoff Wild.
The Belly Tank (or Drop/Wing Tank) is from a 1943 Mustang P51 Fighter Bomber Aircraft. The tanks were fitted to aircraft for long range flying. Geoff’s tank was found washed up on beach at Dungeness on the South Coast of England at the end of the second World War.
50 years later Geoff unearthed the tank and decided to build a Hot Rod, loosely based on Belly Tank Hot Rod’s raced on Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah in the post war period.
The chassis and running gear for the build are from a 1947 Standard Flying 12, the engine is a 2 litre V4 from a 1969 Ford Capri and gearbox from a Volvo Amazon. Other components have been salvaged and re-engineered to fit inside the restrictive space of an old fuel tank.
Hot Rod racing footage was filmed at the 'Race the Waves' event held at Bridlington, East of Riding, Yorkshire.
