Interesting how this came out in 2022, but i feel that i have to comment: I got this car in 2006 and after 16 years and 300 000 km it's still runing great with a good fuel consumption. Yes the 4x4 system for the x-trail is THE BEST!!! in it's category. No wonder it's on 1st place. Great video, made me love this car even more! P.S. the 4x4 lock system works only under 40km/h, so enabling it "like in the video" on the track, was nonsens. It goes into AUTO mode automaticaly when you go over 40km/h cose it's designed to get out of sticky situations (snow, mud) but not to race.
I saw this video for the first time five minutes ago and when he locked the Xtrail transmission on track I had the same feeling : he didn’t understand what Lock is made for.
Can't believe he put the Xtrail in 4x4 Lock on the race track. That mode is only for loose surface, mud or snow. On a dry road it's like driving with difflock on. Axle windup, lots of strain on the transmission. Even the handbook warns not to use 4 Lock in the dry.
The system automatically switches out of lock when if knows u don’t need it so no real harm done. I think it was done for camera to show it has a 4x4 system
rich Williams No, that's only in auto mode. 4x4 lock puts it permanently on. However I don't agree with the OP anyway- I've used it in dry but steep conditions and it works like a charm.
No, you cannot lock the diffs on the model. It locks it in 4wd as apposed to 2wd or the auto system that will split the power if there's loss of grip. There is categorically no harm in driving this car in permanent 4wd lock.
I own the Xtrail... love it dearly! it's incredible on our 2km bush cabin trail. I have Yokohama GO15 all terrains if i switch it to "LOCK" it has never got stuck in the mud 14" of snow or frozen rock hills :)
Exactly and notice how it doesnt show the full run up to the hill with Rav 4. A true comparison would hve swapped drivers and shown the start and finish of the hill

Well for the continuous record we are just entering 2021 and owning my 06 plate X Trail for the last 6 years it’s still going strong and still waving fair well to all the others it leaves behind. The early X Trails are truly unsung heroes of the family 4X4s👍

This is a brilliant clip that practically put's the cars to test, and I have never doubted the ability of the Xtrail, I totaly agree coz I have the same and I am satisfied with it's perfomance, space and comfort.
Love nissan x trail. Powerful and sturdy. The only problem is that it get heated up esp in saudi arabias hot weather conditions but still it rocks to my level of understanding when i campare it to rav 4. Nissan has got powerful engines and i hope the problem i face has been overcome with the all new x trail which looks little cosmetic as compared to the older version.
My mother had a Freelander 1 TD4 auto, for a good few years she loved the thing as much as I did, it was quite comfortable, enough space to fit a few bails of hay in the back, the cloth seats are something i wish I had in my Land Rover, the rear electric window is something my mum still talks about to this day and complains about each car she’s had afterwards not having such a feature, it was also pretty off road capable never had any issues with the suspension and it was used for it’s intended purpose, and it was good at towing within its rated capacity, however the car had issues engine and gearbox wise, my mum loved it so much she kept fixing it and fixing it, until she eventually sold it and the mechanic who worked on it bought it, and a week after he got it the turbo and gearbox both went, she now has a Dacia Duster diesel manual, she’s had no engine or gearbox issues apart from the charge pipe coming loose, however it’s had many many suspension problems and it wasn’t used no near as harshly as the Freelander, it’s definitely not as comfortable and lacks space, but it is a budget vehicle and I like it a lot myself, much prefer the Renault engine in the Duster than the BMW engine in the Freelander, and not to mention the Duster is at least twice more fuel efficient. Still would rather own the freelander.
Haha! The Lock option on the X trail only engages when you're doing under 40km/h/miles. What a douche for saying otherwise lol and he says he can notice a difference! hahaha
I have already done 360,000 km with an X trail T30 (2,0l, 150hp) . I haven't encountered any problems so far. I don't know which car could I choose if I want to change my car!

Tiff mentions the difference between the X-Trail and RAV4 is that you can flick a switch in the Nissan to put it in permanent 4WD. However, the RAV4 2.0L already has permanent 4WD, and the NRG and VX models even a rear limited slip diff at the rear too! With both of them now being 17+ years old, the RAV4 is still going strong in the reliability department. I certainly wouldn’t choose the X-Trail over the Toyota.
I have owned this same model of X-Trail for 9 years, and it is a fantastic vehicle, all-around - reliability, design, ground clearance, space, comfort, power (2.5 litre Petrol engine), 4WD, etc... About a month ago, I got to ride in the same model of RAV4 featured in this video. Although it is a nice car, it feels like a small hatchback compared to the X-Trail.
I had a rav4 for awhile. I loved how nimble it was. Way too much fun for a compact SUV. I have never driven an x-trail so i cant say anything but i think these cars are for different people. The rav4 is much smaller than the Nissan and is much more fun. The nissan is more practical for a family and offroading due to ride height and size. I would say they both win. Pick which one suits your lifestyle.
maartin63 Had my X-Trail for almost 2 years now and it hasn't missed a beat although I do allow engine to idle after a run to allow turbo to spool down and cool before switching off.

Following this 4 year old comment and assuming you got one, was it the T30 version and how is the rust situation? The T30 version has a major flaw with its rear arches trapping water and rusting through completely making them extremely dangerous.
@@Empirehogyou need to buy a euro4 onwards t30 because Nissan modified the the turrets so they no longer rust inside out. They're fantastic cars. I've abused my ones and they just keep on going. Will have to be petrol because of clean air zones however
@eolovento The RAV4 diesel manual gives 8.9L/100km in urban 6.1L/100km extra urban and 7.1L/100km mixed. Petrol 2L automatic gives 12,4 7.6 and 9.3 respectively. If only it had a selectable 4H/4L box!
I happen to drive similar Subaru Forester they have in the clip (mine is turbocharged, the Fifth Gear's is NA) and let me tell you there is absolutely nothing wrong with the boot. We regularly have two prams and the weekly supermarket shopping at the back with no problems whatsoever. And the reliability... well it's been voted the second most reliable car of the decade in 2007 I believe (1st was Honda Accord) so Fifth Gear are wrong again.
They nailed this review. It is for the family man who wants to keep his family high and safe on the school run, in a car that drives well on the road and can carry an entire ikea bedroom flat packed. Whilst not looking too feminine so he can take over on the motorway run or trip over to Calais, and when his mates say "yeah but for a 4x4 you should've gotten"... He replies "no... Priorities first, 4x4 ability second... Check out this review on youtube..." Now if you re-gig the ordering of the bu
I drive both the Nissan X-trail and Toyota RAV4, and owned a Mitsubishi Pajero and 1997 Daihatsu Sportrak. The fuel economy of the RAV4 far outshines the X-trail. Just sayin´...
Love this review very exciting to see who is the last man standing or in this case, SUV ;D I absolutely LOVE how you push every car you review far beyond any other reviewers out there on youtube. THIS is the type of info I need to know and not some high class jackass sitting in their seet going 20k/h throughout the whole review and talking about the feel of the car and how neat the cup holder is. 5stars!!!
They forgot to mention that the rav4 gets 30 mpg and the 9th most reliable car in the world 2nd most reliable car made by toyota and the first crossover
0-100km/hr...an interesting way to grade their performance. There aren't any cars (for the many) that I know of that are more reliable than a Subaru if the owner maintains them correctly. All cara should be 'graded' for driving dynamics because that is a truer comparison. Overall, a refreshing change of reveiw 'style'.
They should have done the off road test sooner and race track test last. These are AWDs and thus more geared to go off road than doing quick laps on a race track.
@StormyTgurl right. but in the test are almos petrol engine. the nissan is 2.5 automatic 165hp. I have 2.2 dCi 136 hp and it's good. what's your doubt about it?
A first generation CR-V would have out handled them all, thanks double wishbone suspension design, yet could've matched X-Trail's offroad performance, due to higher ground clearance.
they are not fair in rating these cars. what is their technical back ground and technical knowledge about each car prior to rating each car. ???? i am not impressed with this video. i give it thumb down
Yea, no. As much as I LOVE the Forester, they are right. It's just a lifted wagon. It even uses the Legacy wagon chassis. AWD does not equal 4x4. The only proper 4x4 SUV there is the Nissan X-Trail which I loathe. A proper 4x4 has a separate ladder-type chassis and a 4 wheel drive system selectable between 2wd and 4wd.
Teodor Todorov yeah with Honda's. I live in Michigan and I test drove both new ones. The CR-V killed it. No wonder it was named Motortrend's SUV of the year.
Teodor Todorov Stop talking out your ass. Subaru does not have a 4x4 system. They have an AWD system. There's a difference. 4x4's can go from 2wd to 4wd. Subaru's are ALWAYS 4WD, meaning they are AWD, not 4x4. I know the concept is above your head but do try to research these things before spouting BS. I'm a trained mechanic.
Fadi Beno Honda's AWD system is total crap. It's only AWD until like 20 or 30 MPH, then it goes back to FWD. Subaru's AWD system is great and deserves tremendous respect. Audi's Quattro system is similar, and so much better, but also fraught with multiple reliability issues.
The Sorento with ladder chassis, 2.5 timing chain improved version of a mitsubishi based garret turbo diesel and the early strong 4 speed Aisin auto box and part time selectable borg 4wd is the best all rounder semi serious 4x4 imo, main problem is rear trailing arm brackets rusting and breaking. The CR-V 2.0 vtec manual is best for most people in UK as it is civic ep3 based with comfy independent suspension, reliable chaincam vtec naturally aspirated engine huge amounts of room in boot with rear seats slid forward and doesnt have a dual mass flywheel like much of the manual competition. Get Honda dual pump fluid changed. Both of these also have rear glass hatch window that opens independently, a very useful feature once you have it. Rav4 no rear hatch but good reliability, vitara, grand vit ladder chassis and low range but no rear hatch and so so build quality and engine choice , forester Boxer engine pain in ass to change spark plugs and doesnt have rear hatch, hyundai santa fe is somewhat ugly dual mass flywheel on manuals, timing belts to worry about. Xtrail no rear hatch and some engine problems, mk2 ford maverick / mazda tribute rust like heck, freelander no end of problems. Hyundai terracan diesel delphi fuel injectors and rear diff problems. Tucson and Sportage are quite good but avoid diesel manuals with dual mass fly wheel and get TOD/ATT oil changed.
@eolovento that is correct i believe. maybe your speakers arent good enough 2 hear the sound. it actually happens at exactly 5:43. i notice it because the 2006 altima we have makes the same noise..
I would actually argue that. I'm really not trying to be difficult, but if you look around the off road world you'll find that land rovers are not very prevalent among off roaders.
How is hammering these round a track helping? Family 4x4 under £20k? Has there ever been one tracked other than on the tv? No mention of MPG, noise, spec or any of the other things most buyers are looking for.
I am surprised that the Suzuki Vitara didn't fare better. I would have thought they were more capable than the Rav4 with their new 2.4 L engine especially off road. I would have thought the Vitara could at least match the Nissan x-trail. My son says X-trail is the best....looks like he is right. He says they have the most powerful engine compared to Rav4, Vitara and outlander.
nissan designed their cars to auto adjust to 4wd. so if the wheels are slipping, all four wheels spin no matter what speed. just the 4wd lock disengages at higher speeds..
WHAT!? how dare they not have the Suzuki XL-7 in the test! i have not driven a single vehicle that can compete with it! infact, it performed the best in the Chicago Traffic Challenge (lots of 0-90mph stuff with sudden lane changes), it may only get 12mpg when driven like that, but it is a lot better than being one of the 40 dead people over 3 snowy days. the only time my mom ever got it stuck was when she drove it off the road into a huge ditch with 8 feet of snow in it, and that probably wouldn't of happened if she had it in 4 wheel drive to begin with. however, the o2 sensors seem to go bad in it every 5 years, other than that there have been no problems. it has been hit by so many other vehicles too, you just can't stop a Suzuki!
Hi and thank you for advice. I saw your videos and there are very beautiful landscape. I love Mexico. A friend of mine cames from Ciudad. I like very much yours Frida Kahlo. talking about honda I think that the old was better because the new model has entry/cross/exit angle non very good for off road and it has an approach for road
@spideyzx6r with that 689 the xt is like a soap.. change it and you will see. it's not like a terrano, off road, suzuki etc, but it can be a real compromise between on and off road.
@eolovento Oh okay, right i understand, i have had no real issue with the bridgstone, but i do need tyres and if you can advise me that would be great, most of my driving is on the highway and usually wet, (i ride my motorcycle when dry) i go trail driving just to get our mountain bikes and friends to the track. in the UK it only really snows for 2 weeks a year but i like to play when it does.
I agree whith you of the angles of new CR-V, I lift mine in 2'', equal of 3 cm more or less. i think to change my tires whit a 235/75 R15 BFGoodrich All Terrain in a short futur. I really love my CR-V to go out and do off road whith "him"
You might be right. Im was just frustrated because i drive Rav4 II with 2.0 diesel and its amazing on that king of terrain. Of course is not Patrol or Wrangler but it gives a lot of fun. Also I know what Rav4 is capable off and my Toyota eats hills like the one on the video for breakfast :D. Im not saying Xtrail is a piece of crap but its really hard to choose which is better offroad
in 90% of situations AUTO mode is good. The LOCK is a block of central differencial for hard situations. if you are going on rock, deep mud, water.. is difficult you will go further 40 km/h
But she has more speed before she went uphill. What Im trying to say is that Tiff sould get more speed (it was possible). Btw. what tires are they using ? I understand reviewing interior, engine, gearbox etc. but when it comes to offroad skills its not only about car power and type of 4 wheel drive. Tires are very important...
This is how they did it. First they picked 3 of their favorites, then tested head to head. VERY BIAS!!! Some SUV's they left out, will kick their winners in the a★★!!!
I agree with Zedovski, who in their right mind would want to drive one of these like a race car, horses for courses, if you want to act like a prat or boy racer buy a death trap, sorry I mean a Subaru.
@SourGrey I'm not quite sure what your trying to say...I'm saying people who own SUVs are soccer moms (or for you Brits "school run mums"), therefore the most off-roading they'll do is the dirt parking lot outside the playground. Also, people who buy SUVs aren't looking too see how fast they can corner on a racetrack.
@deliveryboy1 What are you comparing to? Jeeps are frame-based vs. uni-bodies, such as Subies, Hondas, etc. Of course it will do better off road. BUT, frame-based Toyota swill whoop Jeeps ass anyday, anywhere, and for any amount of time.
Not really. I had a CRV and despite its 4x4 ability is not bad in light conditions, there's no such thing as complete lock on all 4 wheels. I am afraid it would stay stuck in that hill as Toyota did too, because the rear wheels work only sometimes. Now I have X-Trail and I can see a lot better improvement when being on the same off roads :o)
This review is OLD but probably most unbias and structured British review instead of hyping Land Rover unlike some other British reviews. Subaru's have improved since but still caught between two minds ie Off-roader or soft-roader. All other cars including Jeep has gone more down the line of soft roader adn Land Rover's reliability is still doubtful although performance is not.
@eolovento Dude! I just googled the 689 which is... .... the Bridgestone Dueler H/T and you are right, they are a great tyre, i need a new set before winter, I have done 30,000 miles on this set and i will be buying the The Bridgestone Dueler 689 H/T

I'm planning to buy 2nd hand SUV Nissan X-Trail and i think i wont change my mind after looking at this.
Check out this review on youtube..."
Now if you re-gig the ordering of the bu
X trail its the Best.
I drive both the Nissan X-trail and Toyota RAV4, and owned a Mitsubishi Pajero and 1997 Daihatsu Sportrak. The fuel economy of the RAV4 far outshines the X-trail. Just sayin´...
That Honda was never on 4 wheels the entire time on that track, and they want to talk about Suzuki's rolling over?
Love this review very exciting to see who is the last man standing or in this case, SUV ;D I absolutely LOVE how you push every car you review far beyond any other reviewers out there on youtube. THIS is the type of info I need to know and not some high class jackass sitting in their seet going 20k/h throughout the whole review and talking about the feel of the car and how neat the cup holder is. 5stars!!!
They forgot to mention that the rav4 gets 30 mpg and the 9th most reliable car in the world 2nd most reliable car made by toyota and the first crossover
"the first crossover"
The AMC Eagle would like a word with you.
Brandon avalon x trail gets 37-9 mpg
@@GooseWaffe with the diesel engine sure, but it's also slower
take a CR-V, i have one and i can recomande it!!!!! good SUV.
@StormyTgurl yes, you're in right. but with the update of the switchboard/ junction box and changing the intercooler, it's ok.
@spideyzx6r it's a suv, doesn't must have a GTI handles but it needs capability for many terrains and different situations
The CR-V and Forester and the Santa Fe were the best
listen to the nissan x-trail at 5:42. u can hear the secondaries of the 2.5qr motor open up!!
"The 4wd RAV4 could of made the hill if the guy would of floored it like the woman did in the x-trail." Just cut and pasted this, it's spot on.
Sometimes women do drive better than men....... :/
kia nisan and rav4 are in 2020 still relible others not so much , proud ovener of thise 3 :)
I'm so glad I bought an x-trail
A first generation CR-V would have out handled them all, thanks double wishbone suspension design, yet could've matched X-Trail's offroad performance, due to higher ground clearance.
they are not fair in rating these cars. what is their technical back ground and technical knowledge about each car prior to rating each car. ????
i am not impressed with this video. i give it thumb down
Fifth gear have always been a bunch of twats.. There is only one true 4x4 in the video and that's the Subaru Forester.
I said 4x4 not suv or 4x4
suv. You just can't beat Subaru's 4x4 system
Tucson and Sportage are quite good but avoid diesel manuals with dual mass fly wheel and get TOD/ATT oil changed.
the problem with the honda is you cant really use it for towing
If they tested ALL off road; the Jeep and Suzuki would have been the clear winners.
Along with the sorento these three are the best clearly
@eolovento that is correct i believe. maybe your speakers arent good enough 2 hear the sound. it actually happens at exactly 5:43. i notice it because the 2006 altima we have makes the same noise..
Suzuki xl7 is the biggest inside with the biggest engine and best Multitalent.
It's a other league!
Best overall 4x4👍
Only the Suzuki Grand Vitara and Jeep Cherokee are real 4x4s though with low range gearing
if the test was only focus on 4x4, then Suzuki takes the lead because it have reducing gears for off-road
it is 2023 and I still keep my xtrail t30 on garage💪💪🔥
I would actually argue that. I'm really not trying to be difficult, but if you look around the off road world you'll find that land rovers are not very prevalent among off roaders.
@eolovento no its a sound the engine makes at 5000rpm when the secondaries open up. its a sound....
How is hammering these round a track helping? Family 4x4 under £20k? Has there ever been one tracked other than on the tv? No mention of MPG, noise, spec or any of the other things most buyers are looking for.
Best for off-road will be the Jeep KJ. Proper low-range and diff-lock. Plus if you get the petrol 3.7 V6 you'll get performance too.
A 4x4 with pillarless doors is just the Coolest thing ever. Subaru are the best
I am surprised that the Suzuki Vitara didn't fare better. I would have thought they were more capable than the Rav4 with their new 2.4 L engine especially off road. I would have thought the Vitara could at least match the Nissan x-trail. My son says X-trail is the best....looks like he is right. He says they have the most powerful engine compared to Rav4, Vitara and outlander.
i have an X-trail and i love it
nissan designed their cars to auto adjust to 4wd. so if the wheels are slipping, all four wheels spin no matter what speed. just the 4wd lock disengages at higher speeds..
i love my x-trail
Jukka jknh same they’re beasty cars
WHAT!? how dare they not have the Suzuki XL-7 in the test! i have not driven a single vehicle that can compete with it! infact, it performed the best in the Chicago Traffic Challenge (lots of 0-90mph stuff with sudden lane changes), it may only get 12mpg when driven like that, but it is a lot better than being one of the 40 dead people over 3 snowy days. the only time my mom ever got it stuck was when she drove it off the road into a huge ditch with 8 feet of snow in it, and that probably wouldn't of happened if she had it in 4 wheel drive to begin with. however, the o2 sensors seem to go bad in it every 5 years, other than that there have been no problems. it has been hit by so many other vehicles too, you just can't stop a Suzuki!
Back when Subaru Forester was best-in-class to drive. What happened to Subaru? Why did its handling worsen with each successive Forester?
I have the 2.0 t diesel 2005 santa fe brilliant car does everything the big boys do and its brilliant offroad
@spideyzx6r with that 689 the xt is like a soap.. change it and you will see. it's not like a terrano, off road, suzuki etc, but it can be a real compromise between on and off road.
@wladimirelo the forester and outlander shouldn't be in this comparison, they are badass wagons, both capable of 300k miles, not soccer mom SUVs
This was the poorest test I've ever seen for test to see which is the "Best 4x4 SUV"
@eolovento its basically almost like v-tech in a honda engine. it sounds great i think.
I agree whith you of the angles of new CR-V, I lift mine in 2'', equal of 3 cm more or less. i think to change my tires whit a 235/75 R15 BFGoodrich All Terrain in a short futur. I really love my CR-V to go out and do off road whith "him"
Well the information is very useful for the people who want to buy a 4x4 family car.
Nissan X-trail was good and spacious .
@kyogre6444 True, i see that day to day. Most women just want a bigger car to feel safe and carry more cargo.
@varscht too right! infact rav4 has only two seats on back. 3 like optional
Good comparison.
What happened to the CR-V in the last test?
Nissan X-trail is the best SUV
@deliveryboy1
What are you comparing to? Jeeps are frame-based vs. uni-bodies, such as Subies, Hondas, etc. Of course it will do better off road. BUT, frame-based Toyota swill whoop Jeeps ass anyday, anywhere, and for any amount of time.
So..performance for a suv 4x4 is judged by 0-60...not offroad ability????
they should do this test again with the all newly design 4x4 family car :D
@db34desen im thinking of buying a xtrail 06, is it a good car??, please reply im buying it today (or tomorrow)
For a not-so-rich people like me, this OLD review is really useful to buy 2nd hand car. As i can only afford to buy it after few years...
Same! I'm picking up a 06 crv on Saturday 😊
@@mszprint4630wach my suggestion down in the comment
The X Trail is streets ahead of Toyota.
I don't understand which is. have you a link or something else for help me? thank you
@eolovento Dude! I just googled the 689 which is... .... the Bridgestone Dueler H/T
and you are right, they are a great tyre, i need a new set before winter, I have done 30,000 miles on this set and i will be buying the The Bridgestone Dueler 689 H/T
