STORYLINE:
Ethnic Karen guerrillas attacked a Myanmar government base close to the border with Thailand on Friday, just ahead of a landmark visit to the country by Australia's Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer.
Around sixty rebels from the 6th Brigade of the Karen National Liberation Army (K-N-L-A) pounded the base with mortar and heavy machine-gun fire.
The Karen are one of Myanmar's largest ethnic minorities and have been fighting the Myanmar government for independence for their own state for more than fifty years.
Thousands have died on both sides and the conflict shows no sign of abating.
Friday's attack was on Walley, a settlement and military base just across the border from Thailand's Tak province.
The purpose of assault was to unsettle the government troops and remind them of the K-N-L-A's existence.
It lasted less than an hour and it isn't known if there were any casualties.
The overall strength of the K-N-L-A is unknown.
Most observers think they number no more than a few thousand - a huge drop from their heyday when their forces controlled large swathes of territory.
These days the poorly equipped guerrillas stay on the move so as to present less of a target to their enemies.
The incident is a reminder that the ethnic question is one of the biggest problems facing Myanmar, where several main ethnic groups are all demanding some degree of autonomy,
It's one that Downer may want to discuss during his landmark two-day stay in capital Yangon.
He'll be the first minister from a developed country to visit the military state since pro-democracy demonstrators were massacred by the army in 1988.
Last week in Bangkok, Myanmar's Foreign Minister Win Aung said he welcomed the visit and the opportunities it would bring for discussions.
Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will is of the leading figures on Downer is set to meet.
Last week she voiced her frustration at the lack of dialogue with the military government since her release from house arrest in May.
The rulers have promised to bring in a multi-party democratic system but so far have made no obvious moves
towards it.

@@cowboyab432 Laughable, that’s the current champions, where I live, there are ton of muscular and rly fit Burmese including me, preparing to fight in Lethwei in the future, we have sophisticated machines and diets to help us so Karens are looking pretty grim with their pride soon. And also Karen people have been fighting all the time while Burmese relax in the city so that’s why too.
