Is JUNK SILVER Worth It in 2024?

  • In this video I talk about junk silver in 2024 and if it is still worth it to be stacking junk silver. If you are wondering what junk silver is then this is the video for you. Junk silver is US Mint half dollars, quarters, and dimes that are from 1964 or older. $1 Face Value (circulated) of junk silver = .715 Troy Ounces and $1.40 Face Value = about 1 Troy Ounce. Junk silver coins are not being minted anymore and can be in high demand. Currently junk silver coins have relatively low premiums although they still may be higher than that of generic bullion. Premiums on junk silver coins were much higher after covid but have gone down recently. I think that it is wise to be stacking junk silver because it can be used for barter. My favorite type of junk silver is the mercury dime. Check out my Mercury dime search below:

I love junk silver. When I was a young kid I loved the silver half dollars. One of them would buy a coke, three big candy bars and I would have a silver quarter left over. I felt like I had a lot of wealth just to have them in my hands. Great memories

In the 1960s and 70s my parents owned 2 laundries as their second source of income. We would go every Wednesday and Sunday nights to
"rob" the machines and clean everything. Washers and dryers took quarters and dispensers took dimes. My father taught me about silver coins and my pay for rolling all of the coins was to keep the silver. At age 68, I still have every quarter and dime I earned for rolling probably thousands of coins.

Hey SD, I still have heartburn with constitutional silver. 90% coins (junk silver) should be sold at no more than spot. I can, we can, they can say the coins aren't being minted anymore which is a valid argument. But, beware, your LCS will give you less than spot for it. So buy as close to spot as possible and hold on to it for long term. Happy Stacking all.

Second story. I was a the credit union changing out coins for cash. I'm friendly with the teller and we were talking about constitution silver. She made sure I understood before I cashed in. (I do).
She told me about an elderly lady who came in to cash coins from years ago. The machine wasn't taking it. The teller told her about the silver content and to see a coin shop to cash it in. Neither she or I ever found out how that turned out. I hope the old lady was able to get a lot more for the coins than what she thought.

I grew up in the 1960's. Just think back at all of the opportunities for stacking back then. Well at 5,6,7 years old I was not thinking of such things. The money went into the cheap metal safe that every kid had. When you had enough, you put it in rolls and traded it for paper. When I got 500 bucks of birthday money, I deposited it all and got my 1964 D five coin mint SMS set. Yes they used to give you a choice of gifts for opening or adding to your saving account. I still have that set. It is just beautiful without a nick or mark on any of the coins. They came in the Whitman plastic hard case of course. The quarter looks like a cameo PR70.

I like the junk because it can be kept in a trunk. No need for tubes or cases. Just throw is in a tin or some empty vases. It's already dirty, it's already scratched. There ain't no need for keeping it wrapped. So go on and buy some and then buy some more. Buy it 'til you need extra support for the floor. A gallon of gas was twenty-five cents in '73 and junk a silver quarter buys a gallon today if you please.🙂

I inherited coins from my family. We’ve lived on the same land for around two centuries and in the northeast for four centuries. I ended up with a dusty old bag of coins. My family kept cash and coin on hand for the lean times. I a bunch of constitutional silver. Some of it pretty old. Along with pennies and Large cents. I had a grungy piece of copper that I thought someone threw in from an old piece of machinery or something. Got to looking at it and realized it had something unintelligible on it. I cleaned it according to sources and discovered an 1803 Large Cent underneath the grime. I’ve been stacking silver and gold of my own for a bit, but never got the Constitutional Coinage bug until I inherited these. Have been mulling collecting some more. I like it for the historical and numismatic value more, I think. It’s just really cool to hold history in your hand. I’m not sold on the bartering idea. I stack the bullion for savings and it’s turned into a decent investment. Now I have the coin bug. Thanks for your videos. I’ve learned a lot.

"Junk Silver" has always been my favorite and the only thing I have stacked since 2017. I love its history and bejng able to just hold it in my hands. Since they no longer make it, I feel that it will eventually command very high premiums. I also like my junk with patina. If it is cleaned, the history aesthetic is pretty much gone.

I have also added World War III Nichols that have 35% silver. When the silver dime has a melt value of $1.80 the silver nickel has a melt value of about $1.40. A little bit better barter item however, I do recognize the learning curve will be steeper with the war nickels.

I like constitution silver. I remember as a kid finding a few mercury dimes (I was about four). Dad put them aside. Near his death he told me to grab the silver and he told me where it was. It was a good amount and of course the mercury dimes were in the pile.
Everyone should have some of it around the house.

My preference is Liberty Half Dollars for the many of the same reasons you like the Mercury dimes.

I always find the term ''Junk silver'' a sad one given many are such beautiful (if generally common and circulated) coins. I like to imagine their story and the hands they must have passed through over time.

im pretty sure 90% of my stack is junk/constitutional. ive been leaning into 5oz bars this week too but i really like the poured bars. especially the vintage ones but theyre a little pricey haha. i got an sd bullion liberty bell pour and a handful of benjies today. i love the constitutional because its fairly cheap, its super recognizable and no arguing over if its real or what its worth when shtf and in a barter situation (hard to sell a random bar to a random guy when hes never seen it before and doesnt trust you or that its real), also the history in them makes them awesome and theres no more of them being made making them somewhat collectable and you can ask for a premium with certain buyers. i agree that the merc dimes are awesome! theyre one of my favorites. i really love the barber design too! ill be looking to finish my barber and and seated liberty denominations next!

Stack a roll of Mercury and Roosevelt coins together and the difference is pretty extreme. For even a better example, stack some Rosie’s next to a roll of Barber dimes 😳

When I was a kid, a silver quarter bought elementary school lunch plus carton of milk (there were no free or reduced lunches back then) and dessert--an orange dreamsickle, was a nickel. and a silver dime bought 2 Hershey bars after school at the candy store! Hamburgers at McDonalds? A dime and a nickel. Ah, the 1950's...

These coins are real silver change, which was once used as money. The newly minted coins and bars have never been used as money.

Sure, junk is fine to buy. I'm currently buying it, more for diversity purposes than anything else. The premiums are a bit higher than if you were to go with bigger bars, but it keeps things interesting.

Me too. For some reason, back in the late 70's bought $1000 face of dimes and a half bag of halves. For some reason I just didn't care much for quarters. It has been years since I've even looked at those coins. Someday I will. Probably a few collectable coins in the mix. Problem is, I could care less about collectable stuff.

I don't buy it because it's usually overpriced unless it's in a shop, but I don't have any shops that are close by, so I only get to go to them on rare occasions.
