Not only does it show reverence to the late, original singer... to me, it also adds to the sense of mournful longing for the subject of his passion. It reminds me of song by another extraordinary vocalist, Jeff Buckley, called 'Lover, You Should've Come Over'. That song's reference to 'rain fall(ing) upon the funeral mourners', the sleepless nights, the longing, the need, and the unbearable solitude...
