  • There is no Christmas without ciaramella!!
    This instrument is very popular in the South of Italy. Normally, it shows up in combo with the Zampogna. It's made to be played outside, in the cold, in the snow, from village to village, awakening the people, reminding them of the mistery of Jesus's birth.
    I'm playing the melody of a traditional Italian Christmas song: "Quando nascette Ninno".
    This ciaramella was made by Vincenzo di Sanzo, a really talented young instrument maker.
    This was my last video of the series "Winds-Advent calendar 2023". Thank you, dear friends, for sticking with me this whole month, for supporting with your comments and your presence this small project of mine! I wish you a joyful Christmas and a blessed new year.
    And I wish peace to this world. It may sound banal, even naive... but still, it is so important to wish it, to think about it, to feel it, now more than ever. Let's not loose our humanity, let's us remeber, let's keep awake our ability of being hurt and shocked by all that is happening, among with our ability of empatizing, of getting angry, of crying, of protesting, of believing in a better solution then bombing, destroing, killing and slaughthering innocent people.
    This calendar has been for me a kind of self-therapie to cope and breathe in times of unbearable, unreasonable brutality and hate.
    I'm grateful if I could give some comfort to some of you, even for one minute every day.
    Since Christmas is about birth, I want to dedicate my wishes, especially to women. To all the women of this world, women by birth or women by choice.
    There is no Jesus without Maria after all 😉💫
    Last but not least, I simply must share with you this beautiful poem by Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) dedicated to the ciaramella!
    Udii tra il sonno le ciaramelle,
    ho udito un suono di ninne nanne.
    Ci sono in cielo tutte le stelle,
    ci sono i lumi nelle capanne.
    Sono venute dai monti oscuri
    le ciaramelle senza dir niente;
    hanno destata ne’ suoi tuguri
    tutta la buona povera gente.
    Ognuno è sorto dal suo giaciglio;
    accende il lume sotto la trave;
    sanno quei lumi d’ombra e sbadiglio,
    di cauti passi, di voce grave.
    Le pie lucerne brillano intorno,
    là nella casa, qua su la siepe:
    sembra la terra, prima di giorno,
    un piccoletto grande presepe.
    Nel cielo azzurro tutte le stelle
    paion restare come in attesa;
    ed ecco alzare le ciaramelle
    il loro dolce suono di chiesa;
    suono di chiesa, suono di chiostro,
    suono di casa, suono di culla,
    suono di mamma, suono del nostro
    dolce e passato pianger di nulla.
