JAMAICAN STEAMED CALLALOO FROM SCRATCH

  • 1 bunch fresh callaloo
    1/2 onion
    3 garlic
    1 small carrot
    1/4 green and red bell peppers
    Piece of scotch bonnet pepper
    3 stalks scallion
    All purpose seasoning
    Walmart brand poultry seasoning( it’s plantbased)
    Celtic salt
    1 tbsp unrefined coconut oil
    * Add fresh thyme if you have it and use any all purpose seasoning of Choice*

    Thanks a looot, I'm 17 and feel stupid and troubled for not being able to do anything, thanks to u my family loves my callaloo i made from them, i even add meat in it (sausage and bacon). I'm also from Jamaica, thanks very much.

    The vitamins in this greens are water solable so do not soak for too long.I prefer to give two quick rinses

      Thanks for that Information, appreciate it. I honestly never looked at it that way.
      These vegetables are sprayed with all sorts of chemicals and I do my best as far as cleaning them.

    Looks fantastic but Trinidad callalloo comes from the dasheen root. The leaves are much bigger.

      @@David-ol6we based on Google dasheen/dasheen bush is what trinidadians call (or rather use to make) callaloo ..... the point is what we call callaloo is not what they call callaloo (as I'm sure other Caribbean countries have their other names or methods

    I like calalloo, I can not get it in the UK so I use substitute vegetables such as greens and kale.

    We don't have calaloo in in England only in tins but I have grown some green sorrel I think this will work will let you know

      We do have it in England. It is in the Asian or West Indian food shops during the summer months. I grow mine cut up and freeze for the winter months

      Lovely Ley You can purchase this at your local supermarket. I’m based in Fl and I was able to purchase it at bravo supermarkets. If not possible to get the fresh callaloo, you can purchase the canned one at any local supermarket in the international section. It comes cook but you can add seasonings to it.

      You have to take off that outer tough outer balk/stalk. Makes the callaloo more easily digested.

      If you are in the UK the fresh leaves are available at most Asian shops or West Indian food shops

      Not the Jamaicans... We grew up eating callaloo, even have it planted in the garden. Calllaloo can be done in so many ways. It's lovely with salt fish ( salted cod fish, etc). Callaloo is a regular staple in Jamaica.
