HUGE disclaimer: I am not saying that diagnoses are useless. It’s very helpful for professionals. What I mean when I say “diagnosis isn’t important” - is that taking action to start therapy is what’s most important. See a professional who you trust!
    Free courses here: www.agentsofspeech.com/course
If you are reading this, it’s because you’ve been searching for it. Leave it to the professionals, I know it’s difficult to come to terms with it. But focus on what you can do right now! If it helps, use the “I’ll prove them wrong” mentality to help push you and your child to make consistent
What is speech and language delay and ASD
Speech and language disorders can be summarized when a child lacks the ability to communicate effectively as compared to peers of the same age group. Whereas Autism Spectrum disorder, I’d urge you to read the diagnostic notes here: www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/hcp... because I’m not qualified to make a diagnosis, so it’d be better for you to read it and consult a paediatrician or a psychologist.
In extremely general terms, speech and language delayed children cannot communicate well, but usually are communicative. Whereas ASD children aren’t that interested in communicating, that’s why they aren’t good at it.
Can it happen together? Yes, a child can be speech and language delayed and also be on the spectrum.
    Does Speech delay equal Autism?
NO! There are pure “speech delay” cases, with nothing to do with ASD. Most of the time, there really isn’t a cause we can point to about why a child has a delay in the use of speech and language for communication. But when a child is on the Autism spectrum, it usually does come with a language disorder. These children are at a higher risk of having a problem with communicating.
Why having a diagnosis doesn’t matter...
Unless you need the diagnosis for getting into a school, getting therapy services, or getting extra support, then I would urge you to not obsess over the labels. And do what you can right now to participate in early intervention, the earlier you start, the better the results will be.

I have a son who cant even say a single word aside from "ba" and used sign language everytime he wanted something. I accepted the fact that he was a special child. But he can hear and played with other kids. But when he was 5 years old already he began to speak and very fluent in all words. He is now 17 years old and a normal one. I thanked God for the miracle He gave me.

My son walked more than 2 years already and he refused to be taught on how to walk, he usually sits down everytime I will hold his hands to give him a try...but his cousins are always around him and to my surprise he just walked straight one day and even run as if his body is very strong. Maybe the most factor that helped him was his sorrounding and he used to copy what other children did. My prayers for your daughter madam ❤️

Don’t worry about the diagnosis ❤ I mean it. It’s only good to help to get your child the appropriate resources. I’ve been there and going through it again 16 years later with our new baby.

My son was diagnosed at 17 months. He would say "all gone" plain & clear but nothing else. The team came out & said he had a speech delay. I know he was behind because my other children were saying a lot more words at that age than he was. He went to early head start & had speech classes & he was exited out at the end of Kindergarten. This is exactly what I needed to read. My son is now 2 (26 months) and barely speaks. At 18 months I called the local children and family team and they told me to wait until his 2 year review before they would start speech and language therapy, but he could only say "yes" and "all gone". That's still almost all of what he says now, but we have a few animal sounds and a lot more complex babbling. Still waiting on his review to get the help we actually need. I'm just happy to read that it might be something other than autism.

That's good he's speaking complex babbling cause about at 18 months my other children were speaking like that were I couldn't understand most of their words at that age but a few but that's still talking. She’s visually impaired due to neglect from the eyes clinic and the eye gotten worse.

My therapist told us it's not really what they do but it's what the parents do at home that gets the fastest results. I would also ask the therapist for homework to do with my daughter. He was also speech delayed, but we held off on therapy initially as we wanted to see how his speech was impacted by ABA (which he started just after turning 2). After around a year of ABA, we decided to add speech therapy. He has been doing speech for about 2 months (ABA for just over a year) and is graduating from both therapies in a couple weeks 🥲

This video is just what we needed to hear. My son is growing up bilingual (English and Spanish). He's 4 and he speaks mostly English, however, he's not fluent in any of the languages. I understand this is normal and expected up to a certain level, because he's trying to process two languages. His teachers (Spanish school in Mexico) tell us he's far behind from his classmates and thats pretty clear he doesn't communicate as effectively as other children who speak Spanish everywhere. We started taking him to a psychotherapist who recommended us to see a neurologist and we're going to take him to speech therapy twice a week.
I sure hope he gets to overcome those opportunity areas.

My grandson appeared to be speech delayed. He had little to no words at 2 years of age. He’d point, gesture, & grunt when he wanted something. I discovered that his daycare was discouraging talk among the children, as it was ‘noisy’, and they wanted a calm atmosphere. They encouraged the children to point to objects and developed their own type of sign language, which further delayed his speech. Nope! I wasn’t having any of this, so I checked out other preschools in their area. I found an opening at a highly-rated Montessori preschool. It was more costly than his current preschool, so I offered to share the tuition with my son. Within 1 month of switching, he was speaking in short sentences and hasn’t stopped. I was shocked that his former daycare was actively participating in creating a speech delay - especially among the boys I observed.

My 19 month old Grandson isn't saying many words. He does make gestures and babble. He does understand us when we tell him certain things like let's go, let's eat, come here, etc. My daughter is concerned because he is not only speech delayed but he lines things up, flaps his hands, walks on his toes sometimes, and has tantrums where he seems to get overwhelmed. He is going to see a therapist for the speech delay and hopefully behavior specialist for the question of being on the spectrum. He also has chronic ear problems.

My son had recurring ear infections. He had Ear tubes placed in and after that it seemed like his equilibrium was back on track. We noticed a difference after two weeks and bigger differences months afterwards. During the ear tubes surgery they had to flush fluid out of his ear that was just sitting there. His speech was delayed because his hearing was muffled. Speech Therapy is doing wonders.

Those are signs of on the spectrum. But instead of flapping you can say Yayy then clap your hands when over excited. I don’t know how old your grandson is but usually start speaking around 4 or 5.. get the child interest. Whether it be a microphone or something. Or sing nursery rhymes.

I’ve got a friend I used to be around yrs ago & was Informed that her grandson actually showed signs of Aspergers or Autism. Which ever one he has my friend recognized these signs almost immediately after he was born. She was 💯% rt on about the issue that her grandson was showing, she was trying gently to inform her grown son that this was precisely what their precious child/boy was experiencing. It really took quite awhile for the grown up son to finally “recognize it was actually a real fact” Grandma was definitely correct about what it was she saw her precious grandson show. Finally they got a clear diagnosis. 🤷‍♀️Really hoping that the problem this little boy can get the correct type of help to get it dealt with properly. Who knows now?!

My daughter , turning 2 next month, is not as talkative as my niece. I suspect Austism but she suddenly starts to sing some lyrics in Cocomelon's songs and we are shocked. Me and my husband works day and night so it's our fault that she has this delay since we can't be with her all the time and we are the only ones taking care of her. She pulls my hand is she wants her toys, she gives me her toys of she wants me to open it, she says Mama and Papa but not all the time. She carries her blanket and give it to us when she wants to sleep. She is not responding to her name maybe because we call her like 4 names back then huhu but when you tell her "come here", "dont go there" or stop it she will do it. She also says Yehey! If she's happy and she will clap here hands if she is able to stack her stacking cups or shoot the rings in the pole. I have high hopes that she is just delayed :( I want her to be a normal kid. She also plays with her cousin but not all the time. When she see or hear food she will be delighted and sometimes she gives us the food like crackers or bread for us to open it.

My son is over 2years and he likes to do actions rather than trying to speak. Most of the time he is rhyming from some of the videos he watches either from school or at home and even trying sing the songs too. You may not understand what he sings but you know from the rhyming the songs, he says a lot of words mostly on his own which when you listen clearly it doesn’t make sense. His mom and I are worried because most of his age mate around we know speaks and make sense. At 2 and half years we were expecting at least mama or dada or some quite pretty little word 😊. He is intelligent and very active and likes to remove and arrange his shoes immediately he enters the house. What should I do Dr
