I like her early fighting style. It’s like she’s dancing with her opponent, like a ballet routine. It’s very graceful and elegant.

Why did they change her fighting style so much in the new volumes? She used to have such a distinct fighting style - kind of like a fusion between fencing, ice skating, and she just exuded elegance and grace. It embodied her character and personality so well; wanting to show other she can hold her own and can fight good - usually only using her semblance and dust to make it easier for her or others to fight. But now she practically only uses her rapier as a magic wand to summons things whilst just standing there..

I’m starting to realize that Weiss has trouble taking critique because of her father. She correlates correction with condescension. And that is why her technique and fighting with my myrtenaster has remained stagnant. Other than winter, she hasn’t really let anyone teach her. she has a trouble with relying on others and trusting orders. But that ends up being exactly what she needs, a team and structure. the weiss and marrow fight is probably my favorite of weiss' fights honestly, she uses her dust and semblance pretty creatively (like recreating freezerburn from volume 2 with her own use of ice and fire), plus a return of her flying around with her glyphs to put in some super fast strikes. Plus the use of her ice and wind where marrow starts climbing over them, the use of her summon to make it so marrow couldn't effectively use his semblance on her, and just overall i love it. I'm also going to be controversial and say I like the lancer fight, it shows how her training with her dust and semblance during volume 4 helped improve her ranged attacks, plus we finally see her summon in full action during a fight. The moment where she summons it while this life is mine plays always gets me hyped, the way the sword gets summoned with that flourish, the way she baits the lancer with what seems like a straight dive only for her to have it basically teleport around it with a ton of slashes (similar to that move weiss does of bouncing around with her glyphs), and how they both disintigrate at the end is just great to me. Though I might be a little biased since This Life Is Mine is one of my favorite RWBY songs, if not my absolute favorite. I wish we got to see her nevermore though in V8, but I'm guessing its supposed to be a similar situation to her just summoning the arma gigas arm in volume 3.

I know a lot of people dislike Weiss's new fighting style but I personally think it shows some growth.
Weiss was always a glass canon, she knew she has to strike fast and hard to win a fight and you can see that in her firsts fights where she would abuse her glyphs in order to not let her opponents respond. Which actually further drains her aura.
She slowly started to add more support moves with dusts and her glyphs providing utility for her team.
And by the newer volumes where she uses her semblance, and dust knowledge to its fullest potential instead of striking head first. Imo that's showing some growth on weiss's part

Yeah, totally agree. While her duelist style in the earlier volumes was cool, it didn't do her much good against all but the weakest opponents and put her in unnecessary danger. She's now playing more to her strengths, and over time, has learned to integrate summoning into her generally team-oriented, long-range fighting style. She can still take the fight up close, but her opponents over the volumes have made that less and less of a good idea.

Everyone here's just mindlessly bashing Weiss's changes in fighting style from Volume 4 onwards, but no, Weiss never lost her sense of grace and style, even if she didn't get as up close and personal with her rapier as she did prior. Sure, it looks different due to lack of Monty and the change in animation software, but it also reflects her attempts to incorporate new skills into her fighting style. I especially like her journey with summoning. First, she struggles with it, then once she gets the hang of it, she starts to overrely on it to the point of struggling against Vernal more than she had to, and then by Volumes 7 and 8, she has started to synthesize the two fighting styles, and now in Volume 9, she has come full circle.

Thank you! I was searching for a comment like yours. Plus it really ignores how Weiss was not doing great as just a pure swordswoman; like sure it may have looked “nicer” (which is an opinion) but it was definitely not as effective bc unlike Blake she wasn’t able to use it in conjunction with her semblance as well fighting style wise. Really her rapier works best when she uses it with Dust, so I could understand the complaints more if they were about her limited Dust usage compared to the trailer.

It’s such a shame she doesn’t combine abilities more often.
Imagine speeding up time on the knight.
She could use her glyphs as a rail gun for her elemental attacks.
She can hold down an enemy while she creates a line of glyphs to speed up her knight.
If she doesn’t have time for a full summon, she can just dash around with the sword hand of the knight.
She can use these glyphs from pretty far away, so she could just avoid a fight entirely by keeping hidden while using all her focus on enhancing her summon.
Then there’s the hypotheticals. If the glyphs are truly flat, can they be used as blades if positioned sideways.
Can she summon just the arms of a summon quickly or sneakily enough to hold someone in place, and would it be better than the restraining glyphs?
Does the time glyph speed up her summoning time?
We know she can make her summons small, but can she summon a swarm of them if she does this?
And there’s so many more options.

Considering Rooster teeth took a 3 year hiatus to work on the newest volume slated to come out early 2023, I'm kind of hoping they've improved the fighting. It feels like they made a big quality jump but didn't take the time to actually learn it in order to incorporate the things they did in the first 2/3 seasons battle wise (idk if it's just me but after the switch the battle felt less exciting due to a lack of, for a lack of better term, flashy-ness the first couple fo seasons had). I'm also hoping they can give the characters who need character development the development they need, especially those who are stuck and lost in this new dimension/world/universe(?) a lot of our character are gonna be in (such as Weiss, Ruby, and Jaune).

I do like Weiss' fighting style in Volumes 1-3. But then it got nerfed really bad like she was not that kind of Fighter anymore. She lost that elegance, grace and unique fighting style she got, like it was out of form or not hers. Blake's fighting style, too. She was really agile that she can't be seen that much. But then, now she can't even do it now like she became rusty all of a sudden. After not being a White Fang, she became weak like a lot. Doesn't even use her agileness anymore. Ruby, has improved a bit which is good but in Leadership and how she can utilize her speed to be an advantage to looking up to her teammates. Yang's improvement only involves in using her Semblance in the most important occassions than doing it entirely all the time.

Like to me personally it didn't make sense for her hair to seem to top heavy and wearing clothes that look very restricted for movement. She was suppose to be more like a figure skater from what I've seen, but they just ruined it and made her look like a slow mage that can't move. Also like I just don't understand the need for the hair change when they reached atlas . It just dissapoints me since she is my favorite character, and I know she can do so much more then just rely on summoning. Also, she only primarily relies on her summons for a few fights in Volume 5. And yes, she fought Arma Gigas, but it's a Grimm, less stronger that the Hound (ironically beaten by the knight), not a robot, not a human. Everyone one and thing after volume 3 that Weiss fought , it made sense for her to use her semblance oppose to going head to head. Example, she could have physically fought vernal at first which she did but quickly put her on defense same goes for cinder. When it came to marrow as we all know his semblance could easily stop anyone hence on why Weiss fighting him head on wouldn’t work and why she had to create distractions for him. When it comes to creatures majority of them had flight which would make sense for Weiss to use her rapier.
