A Meaningful Correction For a Jumping Dog

The purpose of punishment or a correction in dog training is to discourage and stop unwanted behavior.
This video is a perfect example of how to apply a correction.
1. On time. Within 2 seconds of the behavior
2. Without emotion. No need for anger or frustration
3. Meaningful. It has to register to the dog and be enough of a consequence to work.
If you know anything about dog training, then you’d know that there were actually two types of punishers applied in this video.
The first was NEGATIVE PUNISHMENT - When I quickly removed my hand with food when she jumped. While it was on time and without emotion, it was NOT meaningful. Lena could care less and continued to jump.
The second was POSITIVE PUNISHMENT. Adding the “pop” of the leash. It was on time, without emotion and MEANINGFUL to Lena.
From there we were able to see an immediate change in her response where she THINKS before she reacts and also makes the right decision.
