Dacia’s reputation as maker of cheap, sensible cars with about as much sportiness as a rocking pony is dead. And it’s all thanks to the introduction of the Sandrider - a fully-fledged Rally Raid rocket that is set to take part in the 2025 edition of the Dakar rally. Does it stand a chance? CAR magazine’s James Dennison travelled to France to find out.

Can you see Dacia winning the Dakar rally with the Sandrider?

      Nope

I can definitely see Prodrive winning the Dakar rally with this rally car they made. Nice how they got Dacia on board to sponsor them as well. Things must be going well over at Renault if they're putting the Dacia name on a car they didn't build.

*James May will be pleased, he loves his Dacia's* 😉

Thing looks pretty sick. I especially like the front wheel wells/guards, the way they've put passive slits into the back to improve airflow is so smart.

Nice to see that Renault Group decided to promote Dacia at Dakar 2025, this car is just awesome and driver lineup amazing.
Let's go Dacia for the win in 2025😊😊❤❤❤

probably shares a lot of prodrive hunter as mentioned, but it really looks good.

Renault used the Dacia Duster for Dakar before, so this is a huge step up from its predecessor. The only thing that makes this rally car even wilder is if it's powered by a Nissan GT-R R35 engine.

It was "unofficial" car with V8 engine and south Africa chassie, this car is official Dacia

Why is it so heavy though? That's definitely heavier than a normal entry, where's all that weight coming from? I mean obviously the engine, tires, extra tires and all that but it still seems a bit too heavy. It must be the chassis and tube frame

The headlight design bothers me so much... Whats the reason for one headlight?

the DC Sandrider could have done with a lightweight aluminium alloy & carbon fibre composite space frame chassis & body combo . . . instead of the traditional tubular steel chassis frame . . . that would have put the vehicle's gross weight well under 1.8 tons . . . Dacia could do with a limited production run of the DC Sandrider . . . it'd feature a reinforced aluminium alloy carbon fibre composite space frame chassis & body . . . a 2.4 Biturbo I6 mated to a 8-speed torque converter auto transmission & a beefed up suspension . . . heavy duty coil springs & shocks, stiffer anti-roll bars & a proper custom made 3.8 in. suspension lift . . . a shift-on-fly 4WD system . . . all these enhancements has to be incorporated into the Sandrider without compromising the 362 mm of suspension travel . . . 18.0 in. alloys shod with 325/70 R18 M/T radial tyres . . . retail at €183,000 - €236,000 (approx) a piece . . .
