      All I can say is your guys were living in a cave if you didn't know what this is about. Drag Queens were well known back then. Most of us just couldn't believe they put this on the radio. Even if Lola had been a woman, the "I'll make you a man" was a bit much for the radio then. BTW, this song WAS banned on the BBC, but not because of Lola. It was because they mentioned Coca Cola, making it a commercial plug for a company per BBC regulations. Same thing happened to the Beatles with "Come Together".

      @brandy012173 Před 3 lety +46

    • @victoria7t
      @victoria7t Před 3 lety +29

      @@brandy012173 transvestite is an old, outdated and insulting term. Some men that crossdress are transgender (transvestite is no longer accepted as it does not rightfully define) but also roughly 50% of the men that crossdress are very straight, very male, and very happy staying male. It can be double entendre in that if he still loves Lola then that means he is not straight. They are both men which means he is not straight.

      The Kinks recorded it in 1970
      The words used in Lola most radio stations banned it for some time or certain countries banned it .
      The words used in Lola 1970 ( 53) years ago ( 2023) its only in the last few years that some countries have allowed Gay marriages, some countries like Saudia Arabia, Zimbabwe, Iran give the death penalty for Gays .
      Lola is one of those songs that were made 50+ years ago well before they should've been released.
      I'm an Australian Guy lived in Cambodia and Thailand since 2004 ( 19) years.
      Both countries have lots of Lola's and unless you have your hands on the family jewelery you don't know the difference.
      Yes it's a big call .
      But name any song in the last 100 years that's so powerful with its words .
      But I thank you for your comment, everyone has a different opinion on everything and both you and mine opinion matter , not worth getting into a slinging match over it .
      Can I have your opinion on a great song .where words are used in such a way to make everyone think twice.
      I think every male Straight , Bi, rainbow 🌈 🤔 have had that one (second look) at a Lola somewhere in their lifetime 🤔

    An incredibly clever song. Full of ideas of masculinity, sexuality, fluidity.
    Regardless of how Lola might identify now - Drag Queen? Transgender woman? Nonbinary club kid? "Lola" is a dreamy and timeless look at human complexity.

    • @cl5619
      @cl5619 Před 2 lety +16

      I like the way the song ends by rejecting trans ideology with “glad I’m a man and so is Lola”
      Transgenderism is ultimately tragic. Men cannot turn themselves into women, regardless of their appearance or by any physical mutation.

    • @Alice-tr5fq

      @@cl5619 If that is the case, it creates an even more interesting look into sexuality. If he considers Lola male, 'I'm glad I'm a man and so is Lola', he is still in love with Lola as they are: 'well, that's the way that I want it to stay and I always want it to be that way for my Lola'.
      Whether lola is male or female or somewhere in-between, he is in love. It's a very forward way of thinking about sexuality for the 1970s, which I think is why the song holds up so well today; love is love, no matter what :)

Even as a preteen I understood the lyrics and thought the idea of a man dressed as a woman funny but at that age didn't understand the cultural revilence yet, it was just a fun song to sing.
