I just turned 70 and I just stumbled upon this video. Am totally blown away! It is so encouraging and uplifting not only to hear great music from my youth being performed by young people of today but that these same young people give this song such a stunning (? Is that the right adjective?) and certainly fascinatingly subtle presentation. Kudos to the cameraman too whom I believe captured visually everything that was possible to capture visually.

So rare to find an excellent drummer who will say I can do this on just a tambourine. AND a supreme jazz trumpet player say, sure, I can play the guitar on this, AND a singer like Rachel who will say I can pull off a guy's song with conviction, AND a bass player, Bridget, who can drive the whole (possible) mess into a great song. Absolutely love it. Four TALENTED musicians.

Being a Kinks fan since ‘64 ( yeah, I’m 73 now) and seeing them live about 8 times- first in 68 I totally love this cover: the band is outstanding!

I’ve been playing the bass for 43 years this year and this is some of the best and most subtle bass I’ve ever heard, it both mirrors the original line yet adds so much more.

you didn't say if you played an upright, fretless, acoustic bass....if you did you know just how difficult it is to master the instrument --- Bridget is a true master

I am 73 and a fan of Lake Street Dive. This rendition of one of my favorite songs which I saw the brothers do in person is magnificent. If you aren't familiar with this band I would suggest to look up their music and enjoy. I saw this band one time in Oakland, CA. As you will see with their videos they are all live and in one take they were great.

Kinks. one of the most underrated bands (At the time). Just starting to get the recognition they deserve. Waterloo sunset. Classic!
I've played this video probably 50 times and it still gives me goose bumps. It was the first Lake Street Dive song I remember hearing. Now I have multiple albums, have seen them in concert twice (with more to come I hope). Excellent band.
I've never heard of Lake Street Dive before, but I'm impressed by the singer; she has a great voice!

Amazing, AMAZING cover! I can't count how many times I've watched them sing this in the last month alone! These guys are superb musicians, all of 'em, but most especially the bass player Bridget. And Rachael Price is such a great singer!! Absolutely LOVE her vocals and vocal style. She puts soooo much intensity and passion into this great rock classic that it really makes it fun to watch and hear. I actually like their version much better than The Kinks themselves! Watched many CZcams videos of them singing this at various venues (and time-frames) and it's ALWAYS a wonderful TREAT! 😀 If they make an album they REALLY need to add this to it! I definitely would buy it. 😎

Oi! What was not to like about their version of "Take on me"? That song only made it in the charts because of the video, which was a totally new medium then. But the song itself? Come one! Lake Street Dive brought it in a way that I want to hear it again, the first time ever....

I saw this very song performed in 1980 by the kinks in a small college gym (Allentown, PA ) standing right below Ray Davies on stage (about 6 - 8 feet away). On the other side of the stage saw his brother lean down to take a hit from a joint that a fan reached up and offered. Great Song.

This is a wonderful cover of one of the Greatest Pop-Rock groups of all time, the KINKS...
They made music of this caliber with a guitar that hit a few clunkers to even make the guitarist wince, a stand up bass, a tambourine and 4 voices. Amazing talent. Fantastic group.

Rarely does a cover equal or supersede the excellent artistry of its original version. A few that come to mind include Peter Tosh doing a reggae version of Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode. Janice Joplin doing a blues version of Kris Kristofferson’s country song Me and Bobby McGee, and Whitney Houston doing a power pop version of Dolly Parton’s I will always Love you. Add this to the list! The instrumentation and dynamic vocals wowed me in a way that no music video has done in years. Kudos to Lake Street Dive for their phenomenal reworked reprise of a classic released 51 years ago.
