It took more than seven years of design and construction to finish Hong Kong’s epic Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link (TMCLKL). The project set out to make a massive three-lane underwater highway that could cut travel time to the Hong Kong International Airport by 20 minutes and also reduce traffic on Hong Kong’s other busy highways. Construction had a massive budget of HK $46 billion-- about US $6.1 billion-- but it also broke tons of records, including use of the biggest tunnel boring machine in the world, the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok TBM. This incredible machine is as tall as a 6-story building and reduced the environmental impact as well as the amount of workers-- plus it sped up construction.
There was plenty of other innovation poured into the project, like using the first caterpillar cofferdam in Hong Kong-- a structure used to keep water away from underwater tunnels and provide work space. But there were some setbacks that delayed the project by two years and caused a rift between the Highways Department of Hong Kong and the developers. Thankfully, it finally opened in December 2020. This Northern Connection was Hong Kong’s most ambitious tunnel project yet, elevating it to the likes of other ambitious underwater roadways like Japan’s Seikan Tunnel. Check out our video for everything you need to know about the record-breaking-- and budget-breaking-- Hong Kong construction project, as well as all the innovation that went into the successful connection of the Northern Territories with Lantau Island.

I only went here once from tin Shui Wai to citygate outlets
I got hit by a car in that tunnel.

Hong Kong's infrastructure is the world's best!
That’s a lot of repetition. So many times the smaller values Arnt even registering. Why announce both HKD and USD? A simple pie chart with the cost breakdowns would have suffice and easier to understand than tabulating the numbers in our heads
HKD is pegged 7.8 to USD so I guess they felt it was their chance to show off every time
The shit that humans of all kinds can do is so so amazing

For the Speaker here, who cannot hide his all the negative vibe, the only profitable, and therefore reasonable, project is to buy low and sell high (oh yes, landing money to others is even better a business). Everything else for him is just a waste of time and money. Thousands of workers having jobs while creating something this great is marvelous. And, I do not mean only the workers on the tunnel. Thousands of other people made cement, steel, electro-mechanical and computer systems. Those are all signs of prosperity in a nation that works for itself (as opposed to managing some other nation, while their own population struggles to pay the bills and starves).
God bless anyone seeing this comment!

I think you bought house now...thats great...i would also sacrifice myself upto 2 to 3 years
This tunnel is awesome&bizarre
It makes pretty good sense from a traffic point of view - the original airport highway (now called route 8) basically goes to Kowloon, but in the 20 years since the airport was built a lot of people have moved to the new territories and if you live in (say) Tuen Mun getting to the airport used to consist of driving about 10km east to the bridge to Tsing Yi, then about 2km south to get to the point where you could connect with route 8 and then another 10-12km to get to the airport. So about 3-4 times the straight line distance and adding to the already very heavy traffic. With the tunnel, it's about 5km and you end up right at the airport. To be honest, it was probably at least partly an economic stimulus project - but the end result is at least actually useful.
Despite all the economic crisis this is the right time to start up an investment

3:10 mark... someone explain how that turn about works??? The direction of traffic would cause an accident
I think you marked a few seconds too late, but that just looks like a normal roundabout.
@@canto_v12 A few trailers are parked oddly in the opposite lane, on the road that's on our left.
If they were driving then that would potentially lead to an accident, yes :D But that is a legal way of parking in some countries - and illegal in others. I suppose that's what was confusing here.
@@u1zha What's probably happening is that the area is not yet open as a public road, so only the related construction and supply vehicles would be in the area. The fact that the tunnel is not open (red X on the electronic signs) in this clip might corroborate this.
But that said, in HK it's common for trucks to be left overnight in remote areas where parking enforcement is lax, so that the drivers can sleep for free.

And our roads and bridges are falling apart
We should really invest more in tunnel technology. We can focus on having a green and healthy surface and keep all traffic below ground. What a World it could be...
why not make tunnel of transparent material so sea creatures see cars and people see them
Oh I wonder why Aurobindo? Maybe because of how expensive it would be to manage it? Not to mention how much more expensive it would be to build
@The Richest shut ur mouth scammer
You would need glass that is several metres thick, and that would also be subject to damage from erosion and marine life. Undersea tunnels are always buried under the sea floor to avoid this.
@@canto_v12 haven't you made other transparent and strong alternatives of glass?
Singapore's former Underwater World aquarium has such a transparent tunnel, with a travellator running through it as well. A pity it closed down due to lower visitorship, perhaps due to the SEA aquarium opening nearby more recently, whose tunnel is much shorter though & lacks the travellator

Why does the video show travel on a 2 lane tunnel when these were 3 lane?
The main tunnels are 2 lane, the climbing tunnel on the Kowloon side was done by the largest TBM where it opens out to 3 lanes for crawler HGV's and to provide more space for extraction ventilation. On the Lantau side this is accomodated in an open cut constructed section. The 17.6m diameter TBM had its head removed and a smaller 15m head (same as the tunnel alongside) installed at the end of the reclaimed land section.
The short cross passages were also constructed by a smaller TBM driving out of and into the side of the main tunnels.
Five point NINETY NINE million... Wtf?
China becomes country of big surprises to the world. They truly established "nothing impossible" when it comes about science and technology (may be combination of both). Really amazed their inspiring successes which they are also providing in Bangladesh in mega projects (mostly run by Chinese companies).
The tunnel is in *HONG KONG* China.
