WTF Happened to EDDIE MURPHY?

  • In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
In our latest episode of WTF Happened To... we take a look at the career of Eddie Murphy, who got his start doing stand-up comedy before graduating to SNL where he put a stamp on his brand of comedy for the masses. Shortly after, Murphy ventured into the world of feature films and made an even bigger name for himself with hits like 48 Hours, Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Boomerang, Mulan, Shrek and The Nutty Professor. However, a long string of duds soon followed and Murphy found himself struggling to get back on top. Plagued by personal issues and failed attempts at recapturing the magic of his earlier comedy career, Murphy seemed to be down for the count. Then, in 2019, the famed comedian stepped up his game and released one of his finest performances yet with Dolemite Is My Name, a biopic about the late blaxploitation actor Rudy Ray Moore. After that, Murphy did a guest stint on SNL and is planning to launch back into stand-up while reviving some of his more popular franchises, including Coming 2 America and Beverly Hills Cop 4. Is Eddie back on top? We certainly hope so and welcome him with open arms!

Same I've watched and rewatch almost every single one of his movies more times than I can count and while they were some off the mark ones each one had humor some much better than others but you can still laugh at even his worsts. For an example in this video due to the clip choices and commentary it's obvious the narrator thinks of Norbit as one of his worse movies and I don't see it. I've been winded from laughter and that's probably the Murphy movie I've rewatched the most. Is it the best, maybe not but that's only my opinion but it's in no way one of his 'worsts' and it only gets better the older I get. Having humor a child and an adult can both laugh at for 2 different reasons is a gift in itself. Then again this is only my opinion and this video was his (although I don't believe all the movies mentioned probably got fair critics as they weren't experienced or are relying on memory which is usually rose tinted but it wouldn't be possible to be objective (or practical) watching them back to back)

@@onlyplayaseattacoswiththei9433 I'm aware of that, but "Life" was about two black men wrongly imprisoned.
If the topic were "The Shawshank Redemption," I'd delve into that topic. Andy Dufresne got a bad rap and I was happy when he finally made it out.
So, if I would've said that, would you have said, "White people aren't the only ones that get out of jail"?
That's how you sound. I can't go into other races' homes and talk about their experiences intelligently, but I can talk about mine, as well as many other people that look like me.
I understand your point, but you come across like an apologist, and I was coming from the standpoint of how *I* felt.

And she couldn't even go to her dad's funeral, because his "real family" thought it'd make him look bad. Plus my dad looks white, until you get close up to him. But that's neither here nor there.
      *SPOILER*
So don't give me that cry for sympathy on a topic in which you interjected yourself, as well as your own preconceived notions.
Tell me where I said "this only happens to us," and I'll apologize *right now.*
      I'm waiting...
If the movie talked about mixed race kids, I may have divulged that information beforehand, but as it dealt with two black men set up by a racist cop and crooked judicial system, I decided to stay on topic.
I'll debate you, ad nauseum, if you like, but it sounds like we both have something in common, at least familial, but mentally, we couldn't be much further apart. And once again, I was talking about how ***I*** felt. Not the entire black population of men, so why don't you go back and read what I initially said and respect that my opinions are my own, unless I preface them differently.

Like we can clearly say a lot of his films didn't fair well from a profit perspective but there are so many that are essentially must-watch or show up on great movies targeted toward African-American audiences. Examples: Life, Harlem Nights, and Boomerang. I agree that they didn't fair well, but these were films that had packed audiences when I saw them back in the 80s, 90s, and 00s. Also with a lot of the films I mentioned they has majority black actors in the casts which might explain why they didn't have a broader appeal.

  • @lwmson

I remember him giving an interview back in 1984 while he was at the height of popularity and he said, "I'm hot right now, but you can't stay hot forever, because generations change. Twenty years from now, kids will probably think the stuff I do now is garbage, and they'll follow some guy with a mohawk and a pin in his ear telling jokes and starring in comedy movies."
Although the mowawk guy may have never come into fruition, he was right that generations and entertainment trends do change over time, making it unrealistic for any entertainer to remain hot for their entire lives. NO entertainer, let alone movie star, has had an all-hit career and all entertainers go through peaks ad valleys. To have an all-hit career is totally unrealistic. He'll probably never ever revisit the tremendous success he had back in the 80's, but his mark on the history of entertainment is indelible. He opened the door for the Chris Rocks, Martin Lawrences, and Will Smiths of the world who all admit that he inspired them.

All of Sandlers movies go straight to Netflix now. That's not a sign of failure. He has a multi picture multi million dollar deal with them.

Eddie was in some of the movies I've watched the most times - and still watch regularly. I will never get tired of Beverly Hills Cop (including the sequel), 48hrs, The Golden Child & Coming To America. Those movies are just perfect... long live Eddie Murphy (still waitin' to see Sexual Chocolate go on tour)

He started to be more selective with his movie choices and made a brillant comeback with my name is dolemite.

"More selective" meaning he went with safer rolls that came with a giant paycheck. I love Eddie Murphy & can respect the hustle, but one can hope that as he gets older, he can go down a similar career path as Danny DeVito .

Actually dolemite wasn’t really that good either. Again another staged PR attempt

    • @AlkisenSuper
      @AlkisenSuper Před 4 lety

@@monkeyman2407 That's not what selective means at all. It means he won't just take any role that he's offered and instead chooses very carefully which movies he wants to be in.

He's done a lot since 1996 but some of it was not well recieved but he still did well. Showtime, Dr. Dolittle, Daddy Day Care, The Haunted Mansion, Dreamgirls, I Spy, Adventures of Pluto Nash, Norbit, Meet Dave, Imagine That, Tower Heist, Mr. Church, A Thousand Words, Vampire In Brooklyn, Metro, Holyman, Life, Bowfinger, Nutty Professor II, The PJs, and Dolemite Is My Name.

Life, Harlem Nights, Boomerang were some of Eddie's BEST movies. One of the reasons I dont listen to critics. Most are snobs and dont understand cultural humor.
