- Ghostbusters 2 (1989) is the most underrated sequel of all time. It features Vigo the Carpathian, the best villain in the Ghostbusters series. In this Ghostbusters 2 review, Ken Cole breaks down why it's finally time to admit that Ghostbusters 2 is a good movie.
Watch an extended Ghostbusters 2 review with Ken Cole and @Thelastrowpodcast : czcams.com/users/livevkHRLBBCzO0
The original Ghostbusters (1984) is a classic, and Ghostbusters 2 was also directed by Ivan Reitman from a script by Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis. In the movie, Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) are doing birthday parties, Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) is doing research, and Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) is hosting a psychic talk show. When Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) fears Vigo is after her son Oscar, it's Ghostbusters to the rescue.
A new sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire premieres in March 2024 and features the return of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson!

Finally! A POSITIVE review of Ghostbusters 2! I'm so sick of everyone trashing this movie. While I am aware of it's flaws I'm not ashamed to say I love Ghostbusters 2 and it's just as good as the original.
Thanks so much for your comment, and I bet there are many of us who love GB2!
I agree, Ghostbusters 2 is a good movie in it’s own right. I saw it first before the original movie But when I saw the original movie it blew the sequel outta the water. 2 is good when not compared to the first movie
@@nsasupporter7557 That's how I was introduced to the franchise. First through the Real Ghostbusters cartoon, then the sequel, then the original movie.
I loved GB2 for everything the critics hated it for. I was born in 87, so I didn’t really see it until I was 5, and I watched 2 before I saw 1 for whatever reason.
2 is full of fond memories for me ❤

Back in ‘89 critics wanted something new & fresh with any sequel with expectations for it to be better than the original. Today critics & fans seem to be more open to keeping sequels closer to the original formula that made the series successful instead of deviating too far and risk losing the fan base that are paying to see the film.
This is a really good point!
Very good point indeed.. if one studies sequels.. they'll see the best. Terminator 2, godfather 2, I'll even say the mummy 2. Aliens.. the list goes on and on. Sequels CAN be done. If done right
@@allanm2064 Agreed! (except mummy; the first movie was perfection) :)
@@splatbubbleNah. Mummy 2 is as good as the original
@@jesseowenvillamor6348 I will give it another look!
I’ve never hated this movie . It has a beat to it the way a musical or song does. I attribute this to the EXCELLENT score and the amazing editing of this film.
That's a great way to put it!
Well that’s exactly what you said in your commentary and I’m agreeing with you.
If you’re a fan of the original ghostbusters it has a similar beat . If you envision a metronome ticking in the background of all the dialogue it’s very similar. Its beat is very unlike a lot of other movies but similar in a lot of cult classics. I swear it’s what makes a good movie GREAT and rememberable. Both ghostbusters 1 &2 are like a trailer with all the hype that it brings. The only difference is it tells the complete story .
To me a movie needs to have a great tempo that matches the initial hype brought by the trailer. Both these two movies do that.
Now afterlife gave us something but what it was missing was a consistent tempo / beat. The score was reused from the original but what we needed was something different which matched what we were seeing on screen. This was my only disappointment with the sequel and unfortunately in getting by the same vibes from ghostbusters ARTIC or whatever it’s called.
On a side note I will say that I actually liked ghostbusters 2 motion picture score better than part 1 . Maybe they should look to hire new talent that can bring something similar to this next installment.
It has a lot of solid moments. The subway tunnel scene is genuinely scary, probably the scariest moment in the franchise, right next to the ghost nanny that abducts Oscar. I always wished they would spend more time in the abandoned areas of New York like they did in this film.
Love that beat as they roll up to the museum too.
You're right, there were tons of scares! A quality movie.
Couldn't agree more Ken! GB2 is an all-timer for me. The cast, the music, the vibe, and of course VIGO make this movie. Great video!!
Thanks so much Drew! I could watch GB2 anytime, which is the mark of a good movie. Thank you for joining the most awesome GB2 discussion on the web!
@@KenCole hi kencole good video and you say the truth. thanks to defense ghostbusters 2 movie . my favorit are the real ghostbusters tv series , ghostbusters 2 movie , ghostbusters- the video game 2009 (ghostbusters 3) . ghostbusters 1 is good but i like more ghostbusters 2 .
I have absolutely no idea why this movie gets so much hatred? Out of all the Ghostbusters films, the 2nd on is my all time favorite!
The special effects are beyond amazing, the cast is great, the music is really good. Plus, we get some awesome new equipment, like the Slime Blowers. A piece of gear I have been drooling over since 1989.
Thank you for your comment! 100% agree.
I agree with everything, if anything that could had explored more the story is that since Dana was possessed by Zuul, this marked her as a paranormal conduit and it is why her son was targeted by Vigo himself. Also, yeah, a scene with the GBs dragged to perhaps rescue Ray from Vigo in the nether realm with Ghosts all around them would also be cool, but I guess that last part would had been too expensive and complex to shoot Pre-CGI.
This is a great idea!
@@KenCole ✌️😁 Thanks
Great Review, I love Ghostbusters 2! Can't wait for part 4.
Thank you and I can't wait either!
@@KenCole 👏👏👏
Thank you! You said everything in this video and more that comes to mind when people get ridiculously agitated about GB II. It’s only major sin is that it’s not as good as the original Ghostbusters film.
Thanks so much, and hopefully we can get all the GB2 fans to speak up for the movie!
Ghostbusters 2 was truly underrated. Just wished it didn’t cut Rick Morranis subplot with slimer.
I know! I hope somehow that material can be restored someday.
Oh yes, it's more than good. Bill Murray is fantastic.
Funny fact: the day I watched it for the first time with my daughter (you have to educate the young ones with good things) was on February 14, 2016. And when we got the prediction of the end of the world during the "World Of The Psychic" show...
Oh my God, it's today!!! We didn't plan it, but I'll always remember that now.👻👻👻
That's incredible, what a great story! Thank you for sharing.
@@KenCole Originally Dan and Harold didn't want to do a sequel and felt the original was a stand alone film! However pressure from Sony pictures made them change there minds and they started to write the sequel. Bill Murray also wasn't too excited about working on a sequel and even the 1984 original as he agreed to do it if the studio funded his other project The Razors Edge also released in 1984. Mid-way through the filming of the first Ghostbusters film Murray started to lighten up and have a good time. Plus Murray was told that GB II was going to turn out a certain way and be as good or better than the original which of course he was lied to. The original subplot with Slimer Louis and Janine was also cut from the sequel. They added more Slimer originally to make it more like the then animated series. Sadly test audiences felt Slimer was too invasive so he's scenes were cut! Harold Ramis originally didn't want Onion-Head aka Slimer back at all LOL! Janine switches from crushing on Egon to Louis in the sequel because Ramis thought it would be better LOL! 👻🚫🎬🎥
@@SuperMarioBrosIII This is fantastic info, thanks for the comment! Where did you learn all of this?
@@KenCole You are very welcome and I've known this info for quite some time! Also the mock promo commercial that starts with Louis and Janine calling the Ghostbusters on the phone was actually a real teaser trailer for the sequel that was never used and here it is newly remastered and restored! czcams.com/video/P0alNjmOTlMr/video.html👻🚫🎬🎥
Ghostbusters 2 is fantastic. "I think they're more interested in my epididymis".
The jokes land, the scares really scare. The first time I saw that scene where Vigo calls out to Winston in the sewers/ Subway and then those gnarly heads appeared, I was terrified. The scene where Ray and Winston are locked inside the room with the photos they took of Vigo suddenly go up in flames. Really intense horror stuff!
Totally agree! I hope even more people discover/revisit it with the new movie coming out.
While everyone is focusing on trashing The Marvels you are keeping it positive with something classic . Thank you Ken .
Of course, gotta focus on the good things!
Ghostbusters II is my favorite movie of all time and although the end fight is short, there are some really great details. First off, when they hose down Janoz, you can barely see Vankman on the left waving bye-bye like he loves to do, "hose em'!" Secondly, Vigo was able to posses Ray and when they fired their neutrona wands at the painting to weaken the portal, Winston hits Ray with the slime blower, counteracting the negativity that Vigo feeds on allowing him to let go of Ray. Then all 3 hit him and send him back through the gate. I bet he's not even defeated but locked away.
Ken you aren't wrong. This is a really enjoyable and entertaining movie sequel. I liked how the first film was darker and a little more adult humor oriented. I understand why they went lighter. But it's a real good film and doesn't get the love it deserves. I always wonder if they hadn't waited that long to do a sequel if it would have been on the same line of the first one as far as more serious and darker.
It's a great question, and I wish we had at least three GB movies from the 80s.
I agree GB 2 is underrated. I saw it in theaters at age 5 and loved it. As an adult, I see its flaws. It rehashes the plot from the first film and it does tone down the adult humor. I personally would have made some changes such as Peter being married d to Dana. I know the original script had them going to England which might have been more interesting.
With that said, its still a good movie. It is way closer in tone to the first film than any GB film that has followed by a mile. The cast still has chemistry and its a joy to see them interact. Viggo is an interesting villain and as a kid he scared me. The court room scene is very funny and the tunnel scene with the heads on spikes is creepy. It has a good soundtrack like the first film. I like the slime element with positive vs negative energy.
I would take a GB film like GB 2 any day over the films that have come out since.
Thank you for the comment and I totally agree!
I might be in the minority but GB2 is more appealing to me than the original.
Like you said, the Vigo villain, NES Advantage, Statue of Liberty, animated influence, etc.
The sequel was quicker paced and not as dark as the original - I was around 10 when GB2 released so it was perfect for my demographic.
Also, the theatrical experience probably had an influence on me. I saw GB 1 on cable on a small 19 inch TV, whereas I had a blast seeing GB2 in the theater on a field trip (with my summer school class).
Yes, you make amazing points, and I think a lot of people like it more than the original!
I agree with everything in this review. I've never understood the hate for GB2. I also feel that Vigo was the best GB antagonist. It never made sense to me that the big bad of Ghostbusters was not a ghost, but a demigod (Gozer). I also love that the scares are scarier and the jokes are more fun.
Thanks for the comment and totally agree about Vigo!
I wanted to see the full extent of Viggo's power.
I agree! I hope he might make a return…
Great scenes in the film and Bill Murray really carries it imo. He’s amazing in the movie.
💯
Perfect! :-) Fully agree. Good new perspectives you’re shedding light on as well. A+ ;-) Thanks for this!
Thank you Christian!
The movie grew on me with time. I liked some scenes when I was younger but the Statue of Liberty part was too over the top for me. I think it's always a mistake for a project to be too self aware. It rarely works.
But I agree that it's much better than it is given credit for.
🙌
I remember going to see Ghostbusters 2 back in 1989 and the feeling of disappointed I felt leaving the theatre. I feel the same way about it today.
What about the movie made you feel disappointed?
@@KenCole Mainly the fact that the story was so similar to the original in its structure, but also because there were a bunch of poor creative choices that never made any sense to me.

I saw Ghostbusters 2 first as a kid. The painting of the villain scared me but i loved the film. It felt more in line with the Real Ghostbusters cartoon that i also watched as a kid.
Yes 💯
Good review
Thank you!
I’m a HUGE ghostbusters fan. I was 10 when this movie came out. Saw it in the theaters. I loved this movie then and still love it. Can’t always listen to critics. They certainly got it wrong. I mean, look at the critics that claim GB 2016 was great etc and we all know that’s just not true 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for your comment! Sometimes I don't understand what critics want. 😆
I think he can hear you Ray lol
Absolutely agree, i love GB but also Love GB2 and i dont really get the comments when people say its a copy of the first movie...theres so much new stuff added to the gb universe here. Yes the tone and humour isnt quite the same but i still think it works here.
I rememver seeing gb2 in the cinema with my dad and getting goosebumps when ecto appears on screen at the beginning.
BTW, where did you get your awesome gb2 tee, ive been after one a while but gb2 logo tees seem to be hard to come by
Thank you! I got that on Amazon, they only had one version but it's a lot of fun!
Great video. I can't watch one without the other. GB2 has its own charm.
Couldn't agree more!
Damn right! 👍👍
Highly underrated classic.
💯
Thank you so much for this. I love GH2❤.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
I've always said GBII isn't as good as the first BUT if GBII came out first it still would have been a phenomenon and had a sequel.
Yes, perfectly said!
great compared to any movie today for sure. cool shirt btw
Thank you! And yes, they don't make them like this anymore!
Ghostbusters 2 is a good sequel it own right and still has the 80s made charms within the films
What about the SA-Aftra strike coming to an end news?
We’ll definitely be talking about that!
GB 2 is definitely underrated in my opinion! It IS Good!
Yes thank you for your comment!
Amen brother. I’ve always loved this movie and never understood all the hate it gets.
I know, I never understood it either!
👻🚫Notice the woman on the ground behind Peter. Janet Margolin I believe she was the Prosecuter the in the courthouse scene before the ghosts showed up and dragged her away LOL! And is scene in the ending credits montage maybe a deleted scene?
Yes, I think that was a deleted scene!
I grew up with Ghostbusters I & II, and never saw any difference. 2 has the exact same tone and pacing of the first and is actually scarier. So I’ve never understood the ‘hate’. The court scene was probably the best scene in the whole of Ghostbusters.
Bobby Brown!!!
I loved it , it wasn't perfect but I loved it . And my favorite scene was the courtroom battle with the scolari brothers , I wished they showed more ghost wrangling and no montage.
That was a great one!
I actually like this better than the first one
🙌
Dude yes!!
🙌
Great video. It's not perfect, but it's a solid movie and a fun time. Maybe it's nostalgia as I was pretty young when it came out but I remember getting the promotional toys that were through Hardee's and drawing the logo on everything, but even rewatching it and pushing all that aside, it holds up pretty well. Besides, I've seen worse sequels even in the GB franchise.
Yes I totally agree!
I love the 3 films 1-2-afterlife
Personally Ken, I love this film…. I have a big soft spot for this one….. but Vigo is way cooler than Gozer, yeah….. fight me on it lol
Ghostbusters 2 was the last ghostbusters to be rated pg
I love this video. I really think Ghostbusters 2 is a better movie than Ghostbusters. I agree with this exhaustive analysis. I also think that 1989 was a great year for entertaining and fun movies. It's the best analysis of Ghostbusters ever. Congratulations
Thanks for you comment Jozz!
Summer of 89’ is one of the best summers ever for movies. It had absolutely everything.
I love Ghostbusters 2 seen it in the cinema as soon as it released the film arrived at the time I was a big fan of the first film along with the Real Ghostbusters animation, it's probably the best sequel to any movie at that time it has style, I love the DMC rap version of the theme the score isn't that great but it's a fun film.
I agree it's a great sequel.
I love Ghostbusters 2!!!!
I have always liked Ghostbusters 2. It has a great story.
Yes! I love Ghostbusters 2. No, it isn't as good as the first, but it's pretty close for me. And for a long time growing up, it was my favorite of the two
Yes indeed! 💯
Couldn’t agree more. The most underrated sequel of all time. It’s one atom away from being as good as the first. It’s just fun spending more time with the excellent characters and it’s just as enjoyable as the original
Yes, I 💯agree!
I always loved GB2
🙌
Ghostbusters 2 is an excellent movie. Watching it without bias next to each other, I find it to be the superior of the two films, largely for the reasons you've highlighted.
The villain is better, the comedy is comparable, the story and message is stronger and many scenes are more iconic.
The chief flaw, which is why its rated low, is that it really is a scene for scene, beat for beat remake of the original. It has to lose points for being formulaic. You can argue it's just the original film repackaged.
If you and viewers haven't played (or watched a playthrough) of the Ghostbusters video game, you should. It was excellent and is considered canon as the 3rd installment, with the original cast back.
Yes, I love that video game, I hope it gets preserved over time, even remade with the same voice performances.
@@KenCole I'm pretty sure it got remastered not too long ago
Ghostbusters 2 was also scarier than the first. Those heads on spikes in the subway anyone?
Yes, great point, it had some really scary moments.
I love this series.... even with it's absence of Terry Silver (kidding)

Ghostbusters 2 is not as first ghostbusters but I still think it a good movie it mine second favorite in series and would still rather watch ghostbusters 100 times again than ever watch ghostbusters 2016 again

Ghostbusters 2 is obscenely underrated
Yes!! Ghostbusters 2 is good and fun Movie. Ghostbusters 2 has a lot good Ghostbusters scenes.

Its not as good as the og but it makes sense
Yes, it is a GOOD movie--the problem is it should have been a GREAT movie. And from all accounts, earlier versions of the movie WERE great. But they skewed too young, stuck too close to the original's format, and shied away from everything that made the franchise as popular as it was. I basically put it like this using Real Ghostbusters as a scale: the first movie is the original 78 episodes under JMS, while GB2 is the episodes after Q5 came in and "fixed" the show.
I would love to learn more about the earlier versions of GB2.
Youre not sleeping with it are you Ray? 😂😂
Hahaha
I don’t care if it’s plot is mostly like the first one. It’s a really fun and enjoyable movie!
Agreed!
Ik im late but this should’ve been a trilogy
Yes, totally agree!
Ghostbusters 2 is a pretty good movie, my main issue with it is how terrible they made Slimer look that time around. There are some other things I don't really care for, but that was the peak for me, even as a kid he just looked completely wrong.
That's an interesting point, they definitely changed up his look.
@@KenCole I'm not against special editions of the first two films that only update the looks of the ghosts at a minimum but with Slimer I'd want him replaced completely in GB 2
Unpopular opinion but I love “on our own” better than “ghostbusters” (the theme songs of the movie)

The people who said Ghostbusters 2 wasn't good must feel silly after Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
It's like the people who said the Star Wars prequels were bad and then the Disney sequels came out and were worse.
It had everything but the villain. Vigo and the slime were a dud.
The original film is slightly better but only slightly.

@@KenColeit just fell flat for me when I saw it. 2 over 1 anyday. I grew up watching 2 everyday before I saw one. One was more deadpan comedy for adults and 2 was more for family audiences. The first film comes off as real dry. I love that 2 was Ghostbuster but more. More gadgets, Ecto 1a had more lights and equipment and the soundtrack was totally of its time and great. The Scoleri brothers were awesome.
