Yeah tbh Segun Akinola was definitely one of the bigger disappointments of the era for me - 13's theme was fantastic, but that aside there were only one or two memorable pieces across the entire run.
Not a huge fan of his title theme either; it was cool to begin with, but keeping effectively just a dubstepped version of the 60s theme for all three series felt a bit lazy (though I don't imagine that would've been Akinola's decision)

Yeah, but fleshed-out characters are not what you generally get in a 45-minute, self contained episode - anyone who isn't main cast is just a sketch... "Who" stories need to be at least 100 mins long to give the guest characters real depth, sympathy/empathy, and raison d'etre... IMO.

God yes. Toward the end of the Capaldi run, Moffat was diallinng it in. The least said about Chinballs era the better.
More action/adventure, more stories with genuine stakes (Moffat got all soft and couldn't kill anybody off - Clara, Bill, etc). We want meat on the bones, plot and engaging narrative, not lectures. Stories that are memorable.

I'm a 50 year old long time fan.
But I want to go visit my grandkids and see them playing with a sonic screwdriver, reading a comic or building a lego tardis.
I want a show that tops the Christmas day ratings. And deserves that prime time slot because of its appeal as family viewing.

Honestly, while I do think Moffat has done some of the better seasonal plotlines that I really enjoy, Davies had really good character writing, and I can't wait to get that back.
Chibnal's characters were all super flat, only there to fulfill a role and not be unique in any way. I still barely remember the names of any of 'the fam' because they were such non-entities, only there to ask questions for the doctor to give exposition and stand around in the background most other times. It's a farcry from the companions of old, who had entire season storylines built around them and took active parts in every story.

    • @mightbeapersonmaybe8379
      @mightbeapersonmaybe8379 Před rokem +5

Yeah RTD and Moffat were both good at different things and there was a bit of overlap between their skills. Chibnall just didn't have any of it. The timeless child and the lone cyberman were the only kind of overarching story he did and they were not done with anywhere near the skill of river song, the crack in time, Yana. And I tbh haven't really cared about his characters or villains. I can't even say I love their design like with the kingfisher.

Things needed to save the show:
    - Good composer
    - Good writing
    - Good cast (both main and guest)
    - As an extension to above, don't miscast your era and have actors who say every line with 1 tone and are utter cardboard
    - Message within a story not AS the story
    - Get back to the lone adventurer, not some OP god for the Doctor
    - Good guest writers
RTD and Moffatt were brilliant. Chibnall disgraceful so let's hope RTD does indeed bring the show back to form.

  • @Neil070
    @Neil070 Před rokem +2

Just to add that RTD didn't begin his writing career with QAF. He started in CBBC!
Checking on Wikipedia, he also wrote Springhill, a soap opera set in Liverpool. It's forgotten now, and didn't last very long, but it portrayed amongst its cast of characters a pair of teenagers, one struggling to come to terms with being gay, while acknowledging his sexuality, the other desperately denying his orientation, hiding behind his strict Catholic upbringing and in fear of his parents' reaction.
It resonated with me, as I was in a similar situation with a religious mother and grandparents.....
I always remember the soap, but never realised that RTD had written it. It shows that it was never the name that made me a fan of his work, it was the writing itself

It's so hard to try and watch this show from beginning to now because you simply can't find all the episodes in a single place. You have to bounce around to a dozen different places to try and get them all.

I think bringing back RTD, DT, and CT is brilliant. Here in the states there is palpable excitement from ppl who loved it in the 00s but drifted away over the later years. It also hasn’t helped that until recently there was no way to stream the show here, and half or more of the country has cancelled broadcast television. Now that The DT/CT return is drawing us old fans back, and we have access to the back catalog on HBO Max and new episodes on Disney+, I really can’t imagine we won’t stick around for Ncuti’s run. one of my favourite things about the RTD era was the way he wrote characters as PEOPLE. real people, with real lives, that got in the way sometimes, but still in very engaging ways. it made the show incredibly relatable, grounded, and human. which in turn made the alien extravaganzas all the more spectacular. the characters were also flawed, and their personalities were distinct.
the Moffat era tended to fall into having companions appear more as comic book characters than real people, and their dialogue became a whole lot of basic "clever quips" in lieu of distinct or realistic reactions.
the Chibnall era didn't seem bothered with offering much characterization whatsoever to its companions. it went for more realism and fewer quips, but to the point of blandness. i never felt like i KNEW any of them. none of their personalities really jumped out.
basically, neither Moffat's era, nor Chibnall's, could've ever produced Donna Noble.

honestly hope they do the "old favorite faces" thing for every anniversary special, cuz it makes much more sense then the doctor bumping into his past selves every 10 years, because we've been told and shown this is a feature of the doctor's regenerations, plus eccelston has said he'd only come back if he were alone, and seriously tell me you don't wanna a couple specials with 9 back, cuz i doubt that, and on top of that smiths said he'd like to come back when he's "old and grey" and if they do these every 10 years, he would be old n gray for his time back in the tardis on top of that, it'd be really nice to see mcgann shine on the show properly for a couple episodes

Well, when it comes to music, I'll concede Segun Akinola's scores have been technically competent, often cinematic and sometimes beautiful. It doesn't change the fact that they're also rather generic and that I've found it hard to listen to them on their own as much as you've seemingly done the opposite. You simply can't hold the 'Doctor Who' Proms with only Akinola's music the same way you could with Murray Gold's. I sincerely hope they bring Gold back.

I grew up with original Who, so when I heard that they were "rebooting" I immediately said I wouldn't watch it, because I didn't want those childhood memories destroyed like so many reboots of old shows did. One night I was bored and there wasn't anything on, and the episode with the weeping angels in the Byzantium was playing. So I turned it on, expecting to turn it off. I couldn't beleive what I was seeing. 10 minutes in, I ran to the bedroom where my husband was reading and told him to come out and watch, since it was dvr I reminded to the beginning and we watched it. After that night, we went and bought all the box sets up to that point and binge watched the whole series of new who. For once in my life, a reboot lived up to the original (in some cases better than the original) We never missed an episode, until about half way through Capaldi and Bill. I loved Bill, but the writing had started to get a bit stale. Life got in the way further on, and I only got to see bits and peices of Jody's run, though it seemed to me she did really well with what she was given, but, what she was given reminded me way to much of the end of the original. It had lost something...I am excited to see if, with the returns, it will start to be like it used to be.

I would like to add something about the importance of a weekly run. It provides a regular point in space and time where, as a family, you know it’s in and will make the time to sit together and watch it. My daughter is 5 years older than my son, so we already had Supernatural, Buffy and Charmed together. But RTD brought back Who at the right point for my son to join us in enjoying an exciting show. And what made it even more great was he would talk about it all week, he would ask questions, want to know what we thought of it too. Tooth & Claw remains to this day his favourite episode. It was scary, exciting and had the right amount of Whumour.
My hopes for the future is that it brings back those elements to their full glory, that again, the runs are reliable and longer. But most of all, my daughter has now got her first baby and I really hope that in a few years time they can watch DrWho as a family and just enjoy the wild ride together as we did when she was little. Despite the whole idea making me seem really old lol. Let’s face it, there isn’t anything like it on tv anymore. Logging into prime to watch Supernatural doesn’t have the same feel of special routines time somehow. It’s too easy to say not tonight we’ll do it tomorrow.
Anyway, that’s my opinion and hope for the show.

Your video brought back memories with the Doctor. I was nine and a local station showed the 2nd Peter Cushing Doctor Who film which peeked my interest who was this person and what were the Daleks. After this I was on the search for the Doctor and our local PBS station started with the Tom Baker Era. The last time I saw the Doctor on that PBS station was Colin Baker's Doctor. Then nothing for a few years and the suddenly Paul McGann's Doctor appeared. It was good , but I didn't like the way the Master was portrayed. 2005 and a new Doctor Who program was announced, I was skeptical and how long it would last. I based on knowing BBC track record of funding DW. I was blown away and have been enjoying it ever since. The 13th Doctor had more downs than ups, but had some very interesting points such as the Timeless Child and the Fugitive Doctor; unfortunately, these could have been executed in a much better way. Jodie Whittaker was a good Doctor, but she could have been better if writing could have been more consistent. Can't wait to see what RTD will do. I hope RTD will bring back the tradition of past Doctors team-ups and more Torchwood.

I'm not on the bird app anymore so I lost all the talk about upcoming episodes, although my DVR grabbed them for me. I haven't watched them yet, because I no longer have that block of time when Doctor Who is On, and I just haven't watched them yet. I'm disappointed that they're moving to Disney+ because while it's great for the show's exposure, not everyone has a subscription to the service and some of us will have to grab a sledgehammer to force the cost of a sub into our very tight budget. But am I glad David's back? You bet your arse! The RTD era made some of my favorite eps and I can't wait to see what he brings next.

Without a doubt, RTD is going to bring the fun back to Who, and it should be fun. I think he understands the character of the Doctor, and he understands the fans, because he is one. I remember the excitement of the show returning in 2005, and from the very start it embraced that fun, farting rubber aliens included.
Chibnall's era, for me, was all set up and no pay off and it didn't connect with the fandom and invite them in to play, it distanced itself too much from what made Doctor Who fun and accessible. RTD's era is a whole year away from airing, but already he's had more fun interaction with the fandom and has been teasing us with hints and clues about what's going to happen in the 60th.
I'll be very happy if the 60th is a self indulgent celebration of what has gone before, I hope we see loads of faces from the past. Then we can step in Ncuti's Doctor's time and zoom forward into the future taking a whole new generation of fans along for the ride.

Whilst this is probably a good thing with RTD returning, moving to Disney plus in Australia is hard to swallow. The ABC is the default BBC in Australia, and I have watched this show since I was a young bloke 40+ years ago. It feels like some of the culture is gone without it being on the ABC. Also if it fails or has dismal ratings in the future, I can't see it not being canned and the BBC not wanting anything more to do with it. Let's hope it's a good thing. And put it back on the ABC for the aussies! We have been loyal watchers and fans.

The BBC itself has a lot to answer for as far as scheduling goes...
We all remember playing the "What time is it on this week?" game as time went on - entirely due to the BBC slotting it into gaps in the Strictly broadcast at that point, rather then beforehand in the classic Saturday teatime slot when it first returned...
...and then they shunted it unceremoniously to Sunday evenings - a more consistent timing, yes, but for a family-oriented show to be butted up against school-age children's bedtimes? Big mistake!

I used to own an Audi S8. I'd worked on the car to make as perfect as I could but during a period of extreme skintness I had to sell it. After about four years the man that had bought it phoned me and asked if I wanted to buy it back. Being a bit more flush I said yes and jumped on a train to Manchester.
When I finally arrived at his house I couldn't believe what I saw. The car was in a terrible state. It had dents, ripped plastic bumpers and worse of all had had a crash of some sort that had bent the front suspension. I bought it back if only to save it from the abuse it was getting.
If I'd had the ability to turn back time I would have and the car would have been in the pristine condition I'd sold it in.
Russell T. Davies has the ability to turn back time by casting the most popular actor to play the part in the role of the 14th Doctor. He needs to repair all the damage that has occurred during the Chibnall/Whitaker era and hit the ground running if he is ever going to win back the lost fans of the show. The Chibnall era was a car crash and the only mistake that RTD has made so far is not offering David Tennant a massive hike in salary and getting him to stay on permanently for at least another three seasons.

I do love Russel T, I think he's made some exceptional television. And I see why Auntie Beeb has brought him back at a time when viewing figures and critical ratings have been in freefall - he's a safe pair of hands. But I'm kind of hoping there are things he does differently this time. There are so many characters in his shows who just seem not to go anywhere, whose whole purpose seems to be to support other characters without ever really growing, developing or even making sense on their own. Martha Jones in Who, Jill Baxter in It's a Sin. Even whole casts senselessly existing to appease a sexual predator of a boss while they are for some inexplicable reason the only people tasked with saving the world because everyone has forgotten UNIT exists (Torchwood). He needs a someone else in the room to point these things out to him, and I rather hope that'll be something Disney will spot. If that happens, we could be in for a great new era of Who.

The unique flexibility of Dr Who to play with the characters, storyline, reinventing and adapting the mythology, allows previously held hard and fast rules to be bent to suit any needs. The Dr Who and the BBC anniversaries were expected by fans to be marked with special episodes, and rightly so. I think David Tennant's return, although obviously pleasing in itself, is a purely pragmatic decision. David was up for it, made himself available, whilst Ncuti Gatwa was still committed to work in America, giving the 15th Doctor a clean start for a full season without interruptions was a good decision.
