      He almost caught this in the first set of cinematics, but when Varian referred to him as "My Son" in the legion announcement vid, it called back directly to the Lich King cinematic. The cinematics are really good at these callbacks.

      I think the slight difference though is Anduin holds it with the back of the palm facing the ground, whereas Arthas did it with his back of the palm facing upwards, a more dominant and authorative grip rather than Anduins desperate one, at least how it felt to me.

    Try watching these in-game cutscenes/cinematics, and some bigger ones you missed! They're all very good, and fill in some story bits you missed.
    -The Wrathgate
    -Fall of the Lich King
    -Siege of Orgrimmar trailer
    -Frostfire Ridge finale
    -Hellfire Citadel finale
    -Legion Teaser trailer
    -Demon Hunter cinematics(there are 2)
    -Harbinger series(3 short videos for Khadgar, Gul'dan and Illidan)
    -The Broken Shore cinematic(there are two versions, the alliance/horde have a different POV for this)
    -A Found Memento: Raising a King
    -Nighthold Finale
    -Tomb of Sargeras trailer
    -Argus cutscenes/cinematics, including the Antorus raid finale. You can't miss the Antorus finale, it explains the War Within sword.
    On an unrelated note, the Lich King from the Shadowlands trailer was WAY weaker than the old one. The old Lich King KILLED Sylvanas(evil elf lady) and turned her into a banshee. He also beat the hell out of her a couple other times like when she tried to steal his sword(Frostmourne), and she made several FAILED attempts to assassinate him.

    This cinematic brings Anduin's story full circle up to this point in his overall storyline. A young man not ready to take over his father's throne, forced to fight two major wars and watched a lot of those he looked up to and respected murdered right in front of him. Only to be subjugated by The Jailer and forced to watch as his whole world shattered around him. It made me tear up seeing how well they depicted his PTSD from the trauma.

    Anduin wasn't really force to do much bad. Even the other Death Gods he attacked didn't die, nor die he kill his friends he was forced to fight off as bodyguard of the Jailer.
    His probelm is, that a part of him felt joy about all this power he had and since then he doesn't trust himself anymore. He had quite some struggles on his way, when he suddenly became king after his father was murdered in "Legion" by the chaos forces and many other smaller and bigger things after that, but he always believed that the cosmic force Light is with him (he's kind of a champion of it, the big ressurection scene in the Battle of Azeroth cinematic for example comes from the Light he envokes there.
    But after being filled by the power of Death and a part of him enjoying this power, he thinks he's unwothy and that any other temptation could make him make fall - like Arthas.
    To dominate him, his sword was corrupted by the Jailer with the soul of Arthas, another prince like him and also a champion of light, who had fallen to the greed for revenge and power, becoming a monster who even cut out his own heart to get rid of the last part of humanity he had left inside him.
    Anduin's doubt is, that he could fall like this, too, becoming a monster like him, that's why this cinematic is making him do the same posture as Arthas showed in the Wrath of the Lich King cinematic.
    But while Arthas posture was one of power, Anduins is trembling. It's not a motion of strength, but fear - and Thrall isn't confronting Anduin's blade, but he stabilizes it and with this also Anduin.

    I think it's a testament to the art teams, the music teams, and the cinematic writing teams that people who know virtually NOTHING about WoW lore (or very, very little) can pick up on so many story beats just from their major cinematics. Truly, it is a credit to their storytelling in a cinematic that hardly longer than some major movie trailers are.

  • @miriamweller812

    Anduin was controlled by Zovaal, a god of the cosmic force Death, who was also the one who had empowered Sylvanas, who herself wanted to abolish the eternal Tyranny of Death over mortals (not making them immortal, but giving them the freedom over their own life/death, what they didn't have at all).
    For that the needed someone who could reach the other Death gods and steal the key from them with which Zovaal would be able to escape the Maw (pretty much the hell section of the afterlife, where the other Death Gods had imprisoned him and used domination magic to force him to be its jailer - hence the title many give him, which was force upon him), reclaim the missing parts of his soul to become whole again and then use this and those keys to enter a sacred area of the Shadowlands that is directly linked to Azeroth to rewrite the system (kind of the administration room you could say).
    Zovaal betrayed Sylvanas who instantly went against him, of course unable to stop him, but thanks to Uther (former teacher of Arthas, who also died by the cursed blade of his student, then becoming some kind of guardian angel in the afterlife - what is a story on its own), Sylvanas could awake and with her knowledge about the plans of Zovaal regarding that sacred area, the heroes (players and co) were able to free Anduin from the domination magic (there is a cutscene in which Zovaal orders Anduin to sacrifice himself, but likely the cosmic force of Light gives Anduin via the sacred blade of his father - that was corrupted by Zovaal to control Andruin over it - a vision of his father and Saurfang, who had wielded the blade too against Sylvanas as you have seen in that other cinematic, to remind him of his strength and what the blade actually stood for, for justice and honor, giving Anduin the strength to break free).
    Together with Anduin they can reforge the Helmet of Domination (the crown of the lich king, which was once been created by Zovaal to give him a champion in the mortal world - what didn't really work out well) into a tool to repell the Domination magic the Death God has mastered meanwhile, giving them a chance to stop his plans.
    While this works out, Anduin is still broken in his faith, since, as he tells Sylvanas, that a part of him had enjoyed this feeling of power and that he can't trust himself anymore, leading to him wandering off and not returning to his throne on Azeroth and that for quite a some time - until he reappears there, still shaken and in doubt, though.

    • @LittlepipMLP
      @LittlepipMLP Před 8 měsíci +4

      To elaborate, the last part is why Anduin is so broken by what happened to him. He's had tragedy after tragedy happen throughout his life, but even as a child when we first meet him in WoW, he was positive and looked to his faith in the Light to give him hope for the future. While the excuse that Zovaal was in control of his body when he attacked and nearly killed his allies (including the players and Thrall) is absolutely legit; that he felt pleasure doing so is what's messing him up.
      Interestingly, this draws upon an otherwise minor bit of lore that's existed since Wrath of the Lich King; the Death Knights have duller emotions and feelings normally, but experience intense euphoria whenever they are causing pain & suffering to other living things. They essentially get high whenever they're fighting and killing, and as Anduin was forced into the role (and armor) of a Death Knight while under Zovaal's control, he felt that as well, even though morally he never would.
      That's what is messing him up so bad, and why the PTSD has gotten to him in an unfortunately realistic way. He's so upset that while he looks like he's about to cry, he CAN'T. Not to get too personal here, but as someone who has been in situations from trauma, abuse and pain where you're so upset that you're literally unable to cry or otherwise feel any sort of relief.. it's the absolute worst feeling in the world. Several other streamers have described this cinematic as a "master class" in emotional expression, and I agree. 90% of it is just two guys talking in the desert, but the acting and animation puts it over the top.

  • @Fion355
    @Fion355 Před 6 měsíci +3

    Thing is, Anduin has pretty severe PTSD here. He is not even 25 and lost his mother at like 3 or 4, lost his father twice (Once before Classic as he was kidnapped, and then in Legion, where he died fighting the Legion), had to rule an entire kingdom as a child, was manipulated most of the time by a black dragon in disguse in weakening the humans, got his father back who was warhungry and agressive at that point, tried his hardest to quell the war, nearly died because of it, couldnt save his allies (The tree part), couldnt stop another all out war, then got kidnapped himself into the "afterlive", was tortured for months and then dominated by the "Jailer" to murder his friends. And after he got out of it he noticed....part of him enjoyed that. Which scared him even more. The domination magic trapped himself in his own body to do all of that. This is 5 years after it and he still lashed out with a simple touch. He is THAT broken.

  • @Ailrent
    @Ailrent Před 8 měsíci +10

    An important thing to know is that in the ending of Shadowlands, after he was freed from the Jailer's domination, Anduin met with Sylvanas to talk about how he was struggling - and he mentioned that he felt exhiliration while the Jailer controlled him, while he hurt his friends and allies. So he's struggling with not knowing if he enjoyed hurting them or if it was the Jailer making him feel that way. He went through a lot in the Shadowlands, I would suggest the cinematics "Shadowlands: Chains of Domination - “Kingsmourne”" and then "Anduin Finale Cinematic | Shadowlands Patch 9.2 Eternity's End" to see more about what he went through :).

  • @richardcarignan6313
    @richardcarignan6313 Před 8 měsíci +31

    What happened to Anduin was more complicated. While he was force "dominated" by the jailer, part of him felt the thrill of what happened. The other factor was the fragment of Arthus that was pushed into him during that was a factor too. Just look at the similarities of The War Within to Wrath of The Lich King.
    Also note on history, watch Nobbel87, lots of detail and can go over character story.
    Arthus was Warcraft "Vader" but without a redemption arc and when full dark side to save his kingdom, only to destroy it. Much that happened in Warcraft 3 was what led to WoW. Oh and Warlord of Draenor was set in an alternate timel8ne that was link to the current due to time shenanigans... worst expansions were Warlords, Battle for Azeroth(has some redeeming moments) and Shadowlands(only Sylvanis's and Anduin's stories matter in it)

    That blade is from Sargeras, the mad titan, a god of order, who fell for chaos, driven into insanity as agents of Death manipulated him and showed him a corrupted world, once like Azeroth (= kind of alive or with a living being inside), but the void had corrupted this being and if it would do the same with Azeroth, this would likely be the end of all life and reality, so Sargeras thought.
    Insane as this made him, he went for a crusade against ALL life (all life dead = can't be corrupted anymore) and createad the burning legion, a sheer endless army of chaos demons for that.
    In Legion his ambitions are stopped, gameplay wise of course with a lot of engagement of the player, but in general by the other gods of order.
    Sargeras was like a gigantic cloud around Azeroth, manifestating himself in the form of a planet sized giant as the other order gods pulled him back - and drawing his blade, pushing into deep into Azeroth.
    This led to some problems, including the plane bleeding out (not blood, but 'Azerith', what is only a source of quite some power, so there was a power struggle around it, too, what could be closed, but of course the sword itself was not really something they could get rid off - nor did anyone know why exatly Sargeras did that.
    The theory is, that he tried to stab Azeroth, killing 'her', but it's just a theory.
    Same for the voice. WoW lore is so filled with manipulating forces, that it would be dumb to just think: yeah, that's for sure Azeroth, especially because no one really know if Azeroth is actually good or bad or whatever.

    • @adammorin2955
      @adammorin2955 Před 8 měsíci

      Ok first off the blade isn’t from sargeras it was the dreadlords themselves. Different from the burning legion.
      Sargeras wanted to clense the void which is the ultimate counterpart to light in the cosmology map. Not death. The titans didn’t want to help him for whatever reason and so he gone mad but in reality a plan to destroy the void lords.
      Sargeras was not the cloud around azeroth it was the titan aman thul trying to preject that he was shrouding the world soul from everyone.
      The leading theory was that seragas was aiming for the void lords and whatever is close to azeroth because most of the main world souls are based on H.P. Love craft as azeroth might be Azathoth. As Yogg-Saron was named from Yog-Sothoth.
      The voice is azeroth and no one knew it was her cause because she finally woke up.

    Honestly, depending how much time you have then if you play the game I recommend levelling like this; Exile’s Reach (the new player starting area), and then choose The Burning Crusade to level in from a character called Chromie in the main faction hub city (Stormwind for Alliance, Orgrimmar for Horde). I’m not sure though if the game will allow you to do that on your first character, as it tends to place you straight into Battle for Azeroth content.
    Basically, the best way to absorb the story is to level through The Burning Crusade, then Wrath of the Lich King, then Cataclysm, then Mists of Pandaria, etc. (basically the expansions in release order) all the way up to playing the latest expansion; Dragonflight.
    Unfortunately, the whole “old world” of Azeroth (Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingsoms) was revamped in the Cataclysm expansion, so you can no longer access what OGs refer to as “Vanilla” WoW (the game before any expansions were released) unless you play a version of the game called WoW Classic.
    It may be worth starting with WoW Classic is you want the most authentic experience, but honestly it might seem jarring to a lot of modern gamers as the way the game was designed back then makes the whole experience that much more of a grind.
    If you were to decide to go the expansion-by-expansion route, a lot of new players don’t realise but there’s actually an option to turn of experience gains, so you could play through the rest of the story without worrying about out-levelling it. I wish WoW would retroactively apply the “Campaign Quest” icon to older content so newer players know which ones to focus to proceed through the main story. It’s the biggest flaw of levelling through “Chromie Time” in my opinion, especially after being introduced to the concept in Exile’s Reach.

    That Stance Anduin made with the sword (pointing it at Thrall) is a very important stance.
    The Lich king made the stance in the Wrath of the Lich King cinematic.

    Yo bro, idk if you ever do podcast/call-in formats, but it'd be hella cool to have a lore session with you where some lore buffs can explain the overarching narrative with you and maybe show you fitting cinematics/lore media. Keep up the vids, you're really entertaining to watch. I love how, compared to a lot of people who watch wow cinematics without playing the game you are mad perceptive and noticed a lot of small meaningful details!

    I have several thoughts:
    Firstly, FINALLY they are addressing Sargeras' Blade.
    Second: You gotta love that visual reference to the Lich King trailer, when Anduin holds out his sword.
    It'd be cool if it's muscle memory from when The Jailer possessed him. (The Jailer is the source of Domination Magic, which the Helm of Domination heavily drew from.)

    One person already mentioned the videos that would give context for the huge sword, but if you check out a bunch of cinematics for Shadowlands, especially the final raid cinematics, they'll give you some context for what happened to Anduin as well.

  • @StoovTV
    @StoovTV Před 8 měsíci +1

    There's a lot of context with this clip that I don't think I can do any justice in just a comment. If you really wanna understand Anduin you've gotta watch the Shadowlands in game cinematics. For context, you watched Sylvannas' inner mind hate what she had done since she was turned. In a way she too had no choice but to obey, yet the deeds were done. Anduin was commanded to do what he did but he says that each time he is forced he feels himself slipping away... as if his own choices didn't matter anymore.
    That giant sword was stuck into Azeroth by a Titan (basically a god of the universe). There is a world soul (Titan to be) in Azeroth and what he wanted to do was kill it. There are those who would also try to corrupt it before its born. Thus making a dark titan.

    I think a lot of the WoW lore people underestimate the power of the domination magic the jailer used. It seems Anduin is so messed up by his actions while under its influence because hes not just being controlled like a puppet. It changes your nature, your sovereign will is twisted to something you were not, but now are.

    It's easy to say, that wasn't you, he didn't do anything actually that bad, or as Thrall says he is not his past. However, if you take a moment to think about it and possess the capacity to try and empathize with the situation, it is a pretty dark and definitely traumatic situation.
    He was dominated, and it "wasn't him" doing things, but he was still aware and present for all of it and helpless to stop it. Just try to imagine seeing life through your eyes, and witness yourself attempt to kill people, betray the community you were raised to lead and protect, and assist in the attempted destruction of the entire planet and every living thing on it.
    You have to sit by helpless to stop, screaming within your own mind to stop, but you can't. At times feeling joy, other times complete, hopelessness, and despair. Freed from the prison of your mind and given control of your body again only temporarily while kept within a prison of a cell, still unable to do anything.
    The idea of losing my autonomy, while being forced to witness what is done not only to me but by my body as if I am doing it myself after that autonomy had been ripped from me against my will and consent is horrific to me. I can completely understand why Anduin is a bit unhinged and traumatized.
    It is easy as a spectator viewing things from the outside to dismiss someone's experiences. It is easy to think we would not be affected at all by something if it happened to us. That we would be okay and "just get over it." The truth, though, is something far more difficult to admit, and that truth is that you would also most likely be destroyed as well. None of us actually know how we would react, and we all want to think we are the main character protag. However, more often than not, we are not as "tough" or "badass" as we would like to believe.
    Sorry for the long rant and I'm not saying you are doing anything I'm bringing up. It's just that I have seen some ridiculous takes on Anduin and this cinematic, and I felt like ranting while bored at work, lol.

    3:40 just a little clarification, Thrall and Varok Saurfang are not "brothers" in a sense of being blood related, Saurfang is even a generation older than Thrall. They refered to each other as brothers because they fought alongside one another for a long time and lead the Horde. Thrall as a warchief (top dog) and Saurfang as High Overlord (almost the top dog) and comander of Thrall's personal guard. They are not even of the same clan. Thrall is a Frostwolf and Saurfang is of Blackrock clan, but "hordes" were gathered from different orcish clans and the current horde (the one that players can play as) extends to even different races.
    Also Thrall is not named "Thrall", his actual name is Go'el, but he learned that much later in his life. He was separated from his parents and raised as a gladiator-slave by human lord, who refered to him simply as "thrall". He adopted it as his name as a simbol of defiance

    Hello fellow adventurer. There is so much more to see.
    I have been playing Warcraft for a very long time. It was one of the four "lifetime" game series for me. If you are looking for some input I would happily help you. I cannot be totally unbiased, but I can do my best to be honest.
    There are many great things about this game and despite its flaws I still play. My love of the lore, despite the revamps etc. is just one reason I play. I have had many ups and downs in WoW. There is just too much to write here.
    My best suggestion is to play how you want to play if you decide to play and don't rush. As the Pandarians say, "Slow Down." There is also a lot of "fan art" in all its forms to see, including music parodies and fan made machinima. Cheers! Besheke

    Love the WoW vids so far! I think if you’re thinking about getting into WoW what you’re doing right now is exactly the way to start. I recommend keep doing what you’re doing in terms of looking into the lore. The Warcraft Universe is insanely rich with lore and understanding the character interactions and nuances will help bring clarity to what you’re doing as a player when actually playing WoW. That being said once you feel comfortable with a good understanding of the lore behind it, streaming WoW gameplay with the community will help with overcoming some of the hurdles wow presents to new players. The community will gladly help direct you in terms of keybinds, addons, etc. Best of luck to you with your channel and hope to see you in Azeroth! Lok’tar Ogar

    A paladin getting corrupted EVER by anything breaks their oath. It's considered failing their god/order/oath which is basically akin to death which is becoming a oathbreaker. Which is why Anduin feels the way he does after being corrupted by Sylvannis and he did evil deeds while corrupted.

The story is very well told throughout the levelling experience and its very forgiving to new players so don’t worry about not understanding there’s hours and days and weeks worth of WoW content to follow up on and catch up on, welcome to Azeroth!

    When you first make a WoW account (these days) I recommend buying the current expansion (the war within, NOT dragonflight) because it'll give you a free month of game time. The game will have you start in BfA (the cinematic where Anduin did the big light thing on the battlefield to resurrect his soldiers) and you can follow the story from there.
    You can always go back and do the quest lines/campaigns of the other expansions before it. If you pick Alliance, go to Stormwind and find Chromie (gnome sitting on a large hourglass) and ask her to change your timeline. This option isn't available to new players right away, but you will eventually be allowed to do it.

    5:50 You're right, it wasn't him, he was possessed and so was Sylvanas, they both had no choice because they were under the Jailer's influence, Sylvanas was resurrected into it, he was forced into it. They could've done this so much better, like play off of him feeling powerless to stop himself being taken over, the PTSD from something like that
    Absolutely dislike that they're spinning this weird narrative that he "wanted to do the things that he did", it completely goes against his very character; Anduin is 'the' guy constantly and genuinely pushing for peace over anything, and he's changed the people that ran across him because of that genuine quality. I get that they wanted to spice him up, but arrgh lol
