I don't think enough people out there appreciate how much of a goddamned masterpiece this game is. From the sound design, to the aesthetics, to the level architecture, to the AI, to the tight script, to the near-flawless voice acting, especially from the player character. It's not only a love letter to Alien, it's a game that stands perfectly well on its own legs.

As much as I disagree with those reviews, and as much as I love Isolation myself, I also understand that it is a niche game with arguable imperfections, and that it is not going to be everyones cup of tea. While I still do think that Gamespot's and IGN's reviews of Isolation were tad unfair, mainly I believe that the reviewers approached the game and played through it with an incorrect mindset, where they might have wanted to beat it quickly, but Isolation just isn't about that, it strongly prohibits, discourages and punishes that, but in the end those are just speculations, and reviews still are opinions, and opinions differ, obviously, so do tastes.
Also, when we say "Gamespot gave it *that* score", we have to remember, that actually it's "a *reviewer* from Gamespot gave it *that* score". Gaming outlets, especially huge ones, rarely consist of one stuff member, one reviewer it's usually a place of many people with their own opinions, some of which align with that of their co-workers, some don't, and we can see that with Isolation too, while in the actual IGN review it got ~6/10, there was posted an article shortly after, or at least in the same year, where it was praised, called as "the Bravest game of 2014".

You got some things wrong actually.
The random loot thing; there's set locations you'll find loot in every play through, but whether something will spawn there is the random element, that and it might not always be the same thing - You might get a sensor unit one time, then some glue the next.
And the alien DOES have sense in it's tail, if you so much as walk into it, the alien will turn around and grab you.
    Everything else was bang on.
I still actively play this game so sadly gotta complain about those factors, but I learnt a few things like the amount of data they got to work with, the fact the Hacker tool wasn't based on a game boy!

But part of the genius of Alien: Isolation, and the reason it ran brilliantly on EVERY system - PS3, Windows 7, PS4, X-Box 1 etc. etc, right out of the box....
... was because they invented a brand new purpose-built graphics engine.
That's what they should do for "HALLOWEEN: Michael (part 1)" [see - I've given it a title :)]
My computer is now well over 10 years old, still running Windows 7 ... back in 2014, I had an ageing graphics card which I was prepared to upgrade if necessary ...

      @@sausagesausage ... another good idea.
I think "Westworld" done as a computer game - hopefully voiced by Rachel Evan Wood, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson etc.
It starts with you riding the transit train to DELOS - very similar to the opening of Half-Life (but much better). As you're sitting on the train, you are subjected to propaganda videos about the 'experience' to follow:
"At DELOS we believe in ULTIMATE customer satisfaction. Boy! - have we got a vacation for YOU!"
Then, during the opening tutorial level, you would get to choose your cowboy outfit, and the very same lady from series 1, who guides you through the tutorial, says "Welcome to Westworld" when you are done, as you board the train. [this tutorial section could also have a target range for practising shooting and combat skills]
The first mission is pathetically easy - TOTAL FREEDOM ... you can do whatever you want. Rape other robots, shoot everybody - anything your heart desires ...
But, the surprise is that your decisions in this first level affect how you'll be treated by the robots near the end of the game, once they've gone rogue and want to take their revenge on the customers. Essentially, the way you play level 1 determines the difficulty level near the end of the game.
Misbehave in level 1 too much and you'll have to contend with Dolores and Maeve hunting you down relentlessly near the end of the game (Maeve's special skill is that she can command any other robot in the vicinity to attack you, just by rolling her eyes! That includes things like vultures and rattlesnakes)
The "Westworld" main menu is basically two options, while the opening of the TV show (piano playing robot) is on a loop in the background.
The options, in bold letters, are:
      PLAY
      OPTIONS
There is no selectable skill level in the options - level 1 determines how hard the game is going to get for you.
Thanks for firing up my imagination sausage! :)

There is so much I loved about this game, and why I constantly hold it in my top games of all time, and my top three horror games with the likes of the first two headspace games, and eternal darkness. I loved how they recommend from the get go you play on hard, the constant music, and feel of pure dread. For bonus surprise fact, they originally were gonna make this a third person survival, but felt like the player wouldn't feel hunted, but more watching the character, so that's why they went first person, and if you wanted to look around the corner, it wasn't just move a camera angle, you literally had to move the character. This game took me legit six months to beat, cause I had to implement a 3 death limit, and I got to that limit really quick many times by the hands of the xenomorph. Calling this game a masterpiece is a massive understatement, and I hope that company felt really damnn proud of themselves and this awesome love letter they made to one of my favorite horror movies, and two of my favorite and inspirational artists, Giger and Mobieus.

Loved this game - had the best Kinect integration of any game ever and actually made it a useful peripheral. The number of times I would swear when the Alien appeared only for the Kinect microphone to pick it up and I'd be a goner. Having to learn to suppress my terror was often more difficult than anything the game threw at me. The leaning thing was also cool, but didn't have quite the impact of the microphone. It just added an extra dimension that genuinely made a difference without being a gimmick.

Same developers: "We programmed the xenomorph to have eyes in the back of its head."

    • @hivezphone
      @hivezphone Před 4 lety +2

Some animals have close to 360 degrees field of view, so having eyes in the back isn't cheating by itself. Developers created your primary opponent in the game as quite dynamic and adaptive creature, don't take that from them. Of course it has its flaws, but people who create something new deserve praise for what they did right, not for what they failed to achieve.

I just got around to this title several years after, but from what I have seen so far of the character development and story this experience is up there with the quality of the original movies, Alien and Aliens. The Crew Expendable and Last Survivor DLCs are incredible snippets as well, played those first. Surviving through the shuttle escape scene in the original movie is authentic, adrenaline-pumping, and can play out differently each time. I recall my first run through it played out like a movie sequence, alarms blaring, sprinting down the last hall to the ladder with the xeno on my tail, turning around a couple times to keep it at bay with the flamethrower. Epic stuff, well done everyone at Creative Assembly.

Alien Isolation is the Holy Daddy Elite... of Horror games.
Also, as a part of it's "Learning", it gets more brave the more you use the flame thrower (least in the DLC's Safe Haven and Lost Contact -- which are extended 11 levels of challenges each).
It also can sense when you don't have enough flame fuel (sometimes) and if you use a flare too much as a distraction it'll actually ignore it and walk the opposite direction looking for where it came from.
Very rarely it'll go into a very scary "tip toe" mode where it sneaks slowly and even if it sees you (looking the other way) it'll sneak up behind you rather than screech and run to you.
I can only recreate this in one spot in Safe Haven DLC.. and you can see the creepy tip toe mode in action. :D
Another rarity that I have seen only a handful of times in the entire game...
The Alien can and WILL (if the opp rises) take a Human NPC UP into the vent (entire body).
It has happened in the area where you must get the Cylinder for the elevator.. after getting it.. coming out and tossing a flare down to the guys standing under the vent... I've seen it pull one of them up in the vent.
THen later on Safe Haven DLC it pulled one of the guards up on I believe level 8.
Again I had thrown a flare under the vent.. (the Alien was sent into the vent just a bit earlier by a bomb)... I was headed toward the vent so the two (NPC and Alien) met at that point.
