    I just want to say I love the way you do your ad reads. I realize they're necessary to keep content creators afloat, but some of them can be just so boring.
    Your endorsement of the product with inserts of the actual product are great, plus the bar at the bottom makes it so I don't feel like I'm going to sit there forever.
    Weird thing to compliment, but I appreciate the way you do it. Love your stuff, keep it up!

    You can also use a holesaw without the center bit on a drill press to make the circle outlines, this is how I made mine. Also filled the indent with black tinted epoxy to make it stand out a bit more :)

  • @eformance
    @eformance Před 8 lety

    You could use a hole saw to make the playfield positions too. First holesaw through a piece of scrap wood, then clamp that onto your playfield. Mark the depth on the side of the hole saw and remove the pilot bit. Now use a drill press to cut the grooves. The scrap wood will guide the hole saw and prevent it from walking.

    Couple of other ideas to make it a little easier. You could make the circles on the board using a hole saw. You could drill the hole in a scrap, then clamp the scrap on the board where you want the spot to be, remove the center bit and drill part of the way. For the cylindrical pieces you could use wooden closet rod which most of the big box stores carry in poplar or oak. Also, is the bearing on your round over bit spinning freely? I've had some of mine get caked up and have to soak them to free them back up. All the best and really enjoy your videos!

    "I know not everyone has a CNC, so you can use a table saw". I've never felt so poor, is having a table saw really that common? I was expecting perhaps a hand saw and a simple jig.

  • @brandongriggs3532

    Hey Bob, On the video it looked like you had a burn mark from the bearing of your round over bit as well. If you put a little drop of oil in the bearing and work it in with your hand that should go away. I have had the same problem before but didn't care because it sands out. One time the bearing got so hot that it plunged into the wood and completely ruined the piece. So i learned my lesson... a little drop of 3-in-1 goes a long ways.

    okay question: why the sanding between the tung oil layers? does it help the oil soak in better?

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  Před 8 lety +10

      Anytime you wet wood with any finish, the grain will raise slightly. I usually do a light sanding after the first coat to remove that raised grain. This makes for a better, smoother finish in the end.

    If you had to get the X-carve again, would you get the 12"x12" or do you find the 31"x31" more useful/ necessary. Also do you find that the waste board that you buy with it necessary or could you go out and buy your own to save some money.

    • @Iliketomakestuff
      @Iliketomakestuff  Před 8 lety

      They're actually coming out with a medium size pretty soon, I believe. That's probably more reasonable for most people. I have done a couple large jobs where the size has been handy, but mostly, it's overkill. 12x12 is a little too small too though. You can make your own waste board if you're willing to put in the time to make the holes, etc.

    It looked like the bearing on your router bit wasn't turning. I got a bit from a garage sale once where the bearing wouldn't turn at all, I opened it up cleaned out the bearing and oiled it up a bit and put it back together and it didn't burn anymore. I also found I had to play with how tight the screw was on top. I ended putting some lock tight on the screw for my own piece of mind. Would not want to have that bearing fly off.
