Hard To Catch New Horses

  • The owner of these two horses is a newer horse owner. They purchased two riding horses from an out of state horse dealer. They rode the horses before they bought them. The horses were really good under saddle. The dealers delivered the horse to them, was supposed to spend a few hours with them to introduce them to their other equines, show them how to care for them and such, but instead just dropped them and ran. I recommended the owner come to me first to take a few horsemanship lessons, on how to lead, lunge, go through gates etc. After several visits, I asked how her horses were doing, she said she couldn't practice as she was not able to catch them. If I were to come out again, I would show them how to catch them in the bigger area. But it's best to put some hay or grain in the pen I worked in, and do it in there with the two of them several times, and then work up to the larger area.

Hope it all works out for these people. They are lucky to have you to help them out.

My own no-catch experience was with a re-started mare. We went from more than 45 minutes of running & hiding behind other horses to having her leave the herd in the woods and run up to me to be haltered. Took more than a year of consistent work though, and it was only for me; others still had difficulty.
Enjoyed the video, even though the sound was not great in places.

Thanks, I don't have a head set or anything, just taking video with a cheap camera, and cell phone.

The hardest horse I've ever had to catch is one that ran as soon as he saw anybody and didn't care about feed. Wise to that trick. Turned out on 20 acres. I started with Pressure and release with the 4wheeler, only place for release was barn. Two years later he comes up to me and puts head in halter but has been a long process to get here.

These were easily tricked with food to get into smaller pen, I don't like the idea of tricking with food, but going to an off farm job, working with new horse owners, that really don't understand what I'm doing this was the best way. Hopefully they have me come out again and I can have a follow up video of catching them without food, and in the bigger area.

I can’t believe how arrogant and disrespectful the filmer, who I assume is the owner, is. Talking and not paying attention and ignorant opinions while you are working hard to teach their horses, to give them a good foundation for communication.

I had a new person with me, she met me at the job, (Which I had never done, for a reason) I was not able to tell her please don't talk while I am training, as my clients are paying me a lot of money. I want them to pay attention. I did ask my client if it was ok, as the camera person, lived near her. I was not happy either.
