      If you have a whip, you gently tap the ground, if they still won't go, tap up on top of bum. Start soft before upping the pressure, horses can kick at you if threatened by the whip. Best to hire a trainer to show you with your horse.

    My own no-catch experience was with a re-started mare. We went from more than 45 minutes of running & hiding behind other horses to having her leave the herd in the woods and run up to me to be haltered. • @horsemanshipundpadagogik-p8522

    Wow, you train the horses, so you should get the right amount of money. One part your farrier work, one part the horse training. 200,- € for fixing a problem for good is not much money. Only payable if the problem is fixed and with the option to correct if it shows up again.

    • @bobcatfarm
      @bobcatfarm Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks, I think. Payable for the time spent, not only if the problem is fixed. Very dangerous work. Problem not created over night so can't expect a miracle in a two hour session. But I think all of the ones I have worked with were. I did say that to one client though. I said If I don't fix it you won't pay if you bring the horse to me, so I don't have to travel to your farm and charge you so much for my travel time, and the actual job. She said she was willing to pay me to come out. I did fix it in less than an hour and then worked with another horse on a few different issues. I don't have that footage as I have hundreds of different horse training video footage that sits in my camera, on sd cards and no time to upload and edit.

    The hardest horse I've ever had to catch is one that ran as soon as he saw anybody and didn't care about feed. Wise to that trick. Turned out on 20 acres. I started with Pressure and release with the 4wheeler, only place for release was barn. Two years later he comes up to me and puts head in halter but has been a long process to get here.

    • @bobcatfarm

      These were easily tricked with food to get into smaller pen, I don't like the idea of tricking with food, but going to an off farm job, working with new horse owners, that really don't understand what I'm doing this was the best way. Hopefully they have me come out again and I can have a follow up video of catching them without food, and in the bigger area.

    Do you have any tips for a horse that does not want to go? My 3-year-old has tons of energy when I turn her out but when I put her on a lunge line I have to really get after her to stay at the trot. She just wants to walk and not go forward. And I don't want to physically hit her too much. Any additional tips would be great!

    • @bobcatfarm
      @bobcatfarm Před 7 měsíci

      czcams.com/video/W-oo2guLLBw/video.html If you can get her to walk forward in hand, like what I show at the end of this video, (around 7 minute mark) and then trot when you do with the help of the whip tapping until she picks up the trot, reliably, then she will understand the whip at her hip means go forward. If she's walking it means pick up the trot. But if she is already telling you no, she could kick out. Many horses will look very good until you ask the hard question and adding the whip can make them kick out and get worse before they get better. Best to hire a trainer to help get you started.

    I'll say I hate training a problem loader in a 2 horse straight load! Not a lot of escape room for this human who's older and kinda crippled now. Definitely not fast enough to duck under bar lol. Nowadays I start with an open stock trailer, even if I have to bring my own, otherwise I won't do it. I will do a slant load if the rear tack can be collapsed. Once the horse is loading reliably and calmly on the open trailers, we can work on 2 horse straight.

    • @bobcatfarm
      @bobcatfarm Před 9 měsíci

When they see me send my horse into my stock trailer and shut the door they are dumbfounded. "Your just going to let him loose in there, a free for all? "Yep, no breast bar to go over, no but bar to go under. No metal to kill themselves on. But try telling them that. More risk of injury for handler as well.

    • @bobcatfarm
      @bobcatfarm Před rokem

      This is a five minute video, did you watch from start to finish? As the first almost two minutes he was wearing a bit. Horses that have been ridden poorly in a bit have a muscle memory of the pain. This poor horse was lolling his tongue to the side, rubbing his mouth on his leg, showing all kinds of pain from the metal bit on top of his tongue that was in a vice. I hope you can see the improvement, would you rather someone learn to be softer at the expense of the horse? This is not my horse, but I guarantee you I would not let any of my students even the really good ones ride any of my horses if the were bitted, One does not attain the skills of a surgeon as a weekend warrior, or casual student.

  • @PolyComments

      @@bobcatfarm the mechanics of the Dr. Cook noseband make a timely release impossible. Even if it did release it is the horse that must cause the release by exercising its jaw. When the leather is sweaty it is worse, it sticks (binds) get light with your hands and contemplate a traditional rawhide Jaquima as replacement as you throw that thing in the trash. Let's be perfectly honest, the only reason that people are attracted to these gadgets in the first place is because their harsh hands are causing problems, the horse's nose is up in the air, it crow hops, etc. Get better with your hands, fix yourself, stop thinking that gear is going to make you better. Ideally the noseband ought to be a few inches higher - about halfway between the bottom of the eye and the top of the nostril. Too low asserts too much pressure on the cartilage of the nose, creating "pain", which as with a Tom Thumb Bit will get you a response.

Do you think I would ever allow a beginner to put a bit in my horses mouth while they are learning to not jerk on the reins? No way. I've seen plenty of horses with their nose in the air with bits, hackamores. Have you been to the dentist lately? Would you let a student practice In your mouth with metal tools? Please share a video with me of a beginner riding your horse. 😊 thanks

      He made have been sedated, you need to hire a Problem horse trainer to get him good with his feet. You can't blame your farrier for refusing. If he gets hurt he cant make a living. Can you contact person you bought him from and have them come help, or use the farrier they used? Does the horse allow you to pick feet? If so you can start working with him. If not contact the seller to see if they will take the horse back. Maybe give you some of your money back.

    Good shooting and horseman ship bus I wish some of you people ot there explaining.what you.sre doing could talk a little louder I've got my volume turned all the way up and just barely hear what your saying some people with good ears and soft spoken don't understand what its like for someone who is hard hearing to understand what your trying to say unless you talk louder. Other wise from what I seen and could hear you have a great show

      Sorry about that, I just checked it, and since I voiced over this one, it seems loud enough. The ones that I don't voice over I can't help as I don't have a mic on, or a crew to get good audio.

    This is a good reminder. Sometimes we can forget that it is the foundational things that make a huge difference.

    Ive got one. She’s such a good horse but her nerves get her with shoeing. I’ve even had my farrier trainer take her for a month and work with her every day but she is stuck deep in her fears. She strikes in the front if her hood is hells more than a minute or so. She’s some better not cross tied. The drugging really doesn’t work well enough. Idk - do you think some are lost causes?

      If she is still striking after a month, then the training is not working. I can't say without seeing her. If you have footage you can send it to my email

    Is that a special Arabian horse size bridle?

    • @bobcatfarm
      @bobcatfarm Před rokem

      No it's a horse size, it goes down small enough to fit.

  • @MaxNafeHorsemanship

    Watching that halter break is why I don't like cross ties or web halters. In fact, I don't even like to tie. I also trim my own. I don't even put a halter on them. They feel less stressed and better behaved if not tied. Yes, the farrier CAN be the problem. I worked with one that was golden with his feet, but horrible for the farrier. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. He was always great for me. When the owner changed farrier, all the problems went away and he was the best he had ever been for a trim. Watching you trim at liberty in the end is my goal.

      Shit happens, did not know there would be that set up, when they said they used that I did not have two safety clips which would have made it better, Also best to train the horse in a stall with "the clip", or the blocker tie ring, so when they pull back, they will hit the stall wall before getting free. Thanks for your feedback.

    Hi Cathie, this comment is not about this video, but rather about a question I have concerning my pony who I once called a "madam". Im not sure if you can remember, but I am the one who used to have horses when I was little, had very bad experience, have been terrified of horses ever since. And now we received a 5 year old 12 hh rescue pony. Not to ride but as a pet to look after and to keep the fields around the house down. I have been spending some time with her, but not every day. I also have been grooming her (not her hind legs though) and have been able to clean her front feet. I have also been feeding her brewers yeast mixed in her dinner. And now something so strange has happened that has me worrying: Poppy (thats her name) has had a personality change. Now you may think thats great ,which it is, but is it because she is ill? Whereas before she used to be very flighty, on edge, nervous and just a big attitude saying "no human being is going to tell me anything" "Im the boss around here, move over!" she now stands next to me with her head down. Im very worried now because every night when I bring her in and give her her dinner, she eats it and then just stands there, still, lower lip quivering a tiny bit (which apparently means being relaxed but does it?!) and just does nothing. She stands in an open stable and when I come in she comes over and lowers her head next to me. When she lowered her head before (only a couple of weeks ago!!) she used to do it to nip at my feet! Now she doesnt even attempt to nip me any more. It is like she is drugged up! Should I be happy that she had a totally character change or should I look out for a possible illness? A couple of days ago I started to clip her (she was a bit frightened at first but very quickly got used to it) because it is so humid. But I put a fly rug on her as well and anti fly spray to keep those midges off. Could it be that the midge bites have anything to do with her change? Or could it be the brewers yeast? I am aware that I sound like a total noob but thats because I am one. I just want to make sure that there is nothing wrong with her. Could it be that she has just settled down a bit? All feedback from you is greatly appreciated Cathie, and or anyone else who has experience in keeping horses. Thank you!

      I forgot to add the most important question: Could it be colic? She has been on the fields eating grass all her life, so thats not new for her, but she has been eating mostly hay over the winter and now that the new grass is growing, im afraid she may be eating too much. That is mainly why I put her in over night, so she can eat some hay instead. I remember when I was little one of our horses died because of colic. Im just really worried, although she doesnt seem to show the normal signs of a colic, just that she is so chilled now that sometimes when she eats she actually dribbles (especially when she eats an apple) Ok, I know, I sound like a new mum, with a new baby, and every new thing poppy does, scares the cr@p out of me. Sorry!

      I am not a vet, I can't see her so I can't give you advice. I would not keep her on grass, horses can founder, eating too much Spring grass, especially ponies.

      @@bobcatfarm Thank you for your reply Cathie, I have ordered a grazing muzzle, hopefully that will work. the farrier was there about a week ago and he said that her feet are ok, no illness. I have just been down to see her again before it gets dark (its 9.40pm here) and she seems to be doing ok, just normal. Just more.... affectionate I guess, loving... actually wanting to be with me.... I cant quite get my head around it. Perhaps Im just an idiot lol, in any event, thanks for your advice, God bless you!
