  • On this episode of The Downshift, we talk with the designers of Toyota's new FT-1 concept, the car that could become the next Toyota Supra. The concept was designed by Calty Design Research who has been responsible for some of the Toyota brands most interesting designs including the FJ Cruiser concept, 2000 Celica and the Scion tC. Could the FT-1 concept make its way to market and usher in a new era of Toyota sports cars? Only time will tell.

      Would you have paid $100k+ for it??? It would of met it's demise just like the A80 no one bought them in it's time, everyone was all over big heavy V8's and European cars. Toyota wasn't going to make something just so like a small percentage of people would buy it and the rest just staring at it on IG and watching YT videos of it salivating over it and dreaming to own one when in reality probably won't. Let's face it me or you wouldn't buy a car like that anytime soon {especially with the economy all fucked right now}. Just like a GTR R35 it took 10+ years for it to even be barely affordable in the used market. There's already a FT-1 body kit in the works anyways, it actually makes the car like 2-3inches longer and definitely wayy wider, even more then the FT-1 concept. Look up dukedynamics on IG. Also all the vents will be functional on that body kit. The B58 is proven to be a stout engine, people talk about Reliability and durability, well it's very reliable and durable hasn't had any issues since 2015 in 340i's going past 50k miles. I know a few people that are at 60k+ and still runs like new and there's are modded. The B58 is getting revisions every year and getting better.

    Dont listen to the negative comments and just build this thing! It looks 100× better than the Nissan GTR. Please #Toyota give the public what they want from you; we all miss the #Supra. I loved everything about the design. The red start button on the steering wheel was a nice touch. It reminds me of an F1 car. If you build this for the same cost of a #Corvette I don't think you will ever keep up with consumer demand at least for the first couple of years.

    • @mamunoz916
      @mamunoz916 Před 10 lety

      Judging by the huge $$$ that the Lexus division charged for the LFA, I'd be surprised if Toyota could even beat the ZR1 in price, let alone the standard Corvette models. In fact, I'd be SHOCKED if they could achieve a sub-$100K price tag with this thing... even if it is an I-6 based platform. Regardless, they should definitely build the damned thing, @ least in a short run.

    • @ElZamo92
      @ElZamo92 Před 10 lety

      ***** taking into consideration that the LFA was around 80% carbon fiber and it was built by hand just like a Rolls Royce, the price tag makes sense. I presume the FT1 won't use nearly as much carbon fiber, and neither will it be built by hand, plus it hasn't been in development for a decade (R&D is a HUGE factor in final price), so we can expect the Toyota FT1 to be in the same price range as the Corvette, considering it will likely be a turbo 4 or an inline 6 unlike the Corvette's V8.

    • @dunhillsupramk3
      @dunhillsupramk3 Před 10 lety

      ElZamo92
      i think you have a very good point... but i think the FT1 will use most of the LFA R&D (which is already payed off) also they might do the same as BMW and use carbon fiber reinforced plastic (which is much cheaper and faster to make and its almost as strong and light as normal carbon fiber)... also if it has a turbo 4 or V6 it will be called a "Celica" only Supra came with an inline6 engine

      @supra1722 Před 10 lety +1

      the MKIV, a car introduced in 1993 can lap Tsukuba faster than the R34 when fitted with a talented driver who can handle a RWD car. the Supra had the best brakes out of all 4 as well, no car Car and Driver tested braked in a shorter distance from 70mph until 2004- that car was the Carrera GT. it all depends on the owners and what they generally build the cars to do. a Supra beat R35's, R34's, and Evo's in WTC. Supra owners generally like to make their car straight line beasts which they are, a field in which they are still considered kings in after 20 years. the car has an extremely well sorted chassis, a low drag cd., an iconic design, an indestructible transmission, and a rock solid, extremely capable motor. it may not be as balanced as the NSX, it may not be as agile as an FD, it may not have 4 wheel steering like the Z and it may not be as technologically advanced like the R34 if i may say, but it sure as hell is a well rounded car. the Supra remains a benchmark in straight line racing and a well setup one can keep up pretty damn well with modern sportscars as well.

Intake ports can then be relocated between the intake and exhaust camshafts just above the spark-plugs, like it was done with the Mercedes C-291. As nice as turbo applications are today, like the 3-cylinder turbo motors by Ford and BMW, we need more NA/supercharged cars with legendary engine and throttle response.

    I don't know why people think this supra looks ugly. It looks exactly the way it should look like. It looks nothing like anything out there. The back end especially screams supra, I think people who come here and say it ugly expect far too much. The last supra didn't look all that good, from some angles it looked awesome but u step in front of it and it loos bulky and ugly the headlights look sad, but then u look at the bsck end and it looks fantastic, you look at the side profile and it looks muscular. This one looks futuristic and it resembles the last Gen supra alot from some angles. NSX was ment to look like a supercar but GTR and Supra wasn't. The other two that could look like a supercar in future if they decide o make them would be rx7 and 30000gt.. and I hope they make 300zx but not 350 or 370 9r 30 or whatever they should make 300zx and call it 300zx or something

    • @enigmaPL
      @enigmaPL Před 10 lety

      Ricky Vang
      Inline 6's are not dead and still much better performance engines than a v6 and much better sounding, AND easier to work on and modify. What suggested to you that inline 6's are dead? BMW still uses them, in FACT, the new M3/M4 is going back to traditional inline 6, from its 4.0L V8 in the E92. Just because Nissan cheaped out and used their VQ engine from the 350z as a base, then just upgraded that, doesn't mean the death of an inline 6. It was cheaper and easier for them to do. Not to mention the GT-R has become a time attack appliance, not really a fun drivers car. This is where this new "Supra" comes in, alongside the M3/M4 as a driver focused car. Just like the LF-A but on a more affordable price range. An inline 6 would bring back the spirit of Toyota's amazing L6 engines from the past, and with improvements in tech these days, I can only imagine what a '3JZ' could do, but they really need to take their time with it and over engineer it, just like they did with the 2JZ. That engine was released well ahead of its time and not respected until after the car was discontinued and everyone started realizing how amazing it was.

    Toyota is stupid for even thinking of producing this car. It looks like it will cost well over 100k which puts it out of reach for 90 percent of the human population. A new supra should be affordable, maybe 370Z price range ish, so that people will actually buy and tune them. If toyota is seriously considering bringing back the supra, they need to do it right, and this is not it. Didn't they learn their lesson with the LFA? Awesome car, which did nothing more than waste money. As a long time supra fan and a former proud owner of an 86.5 mark III, I believe the recipe for a successful new supra is as follows: a sub 40k starting price, RWD, weight not exceeding 3400 lbs, a turbocharged engine coded 3JZ, good but not over the top styling, and finally a proper 6 or 7 speed MANUAL transmission. Toyota, if you want to get back into the sports car market with a new supra, please make it an affordable, good, fast car that normal people can actually afford to own. Make the supra what it was but better, not this fucking futuristic race car that's impossible to obtain, modify or live with everyday.

      now the skyline has been replaced with the nissan GT-R which costs, 100k and up (more than the skyline), toyta never produced a supra successor and if they were to then the price would be in the same ballpark as the GT-R (R36)

      I totally agree with you. If Toyota is going to make a new "supra" (I wouldn't really call it one) then they need to do it right. They need to keep a similar style and relatively affordable. They may have been competing with Nissan but they don't need to. The reason they stopped making them was because of all the high costs preventing many people from buying it which is going to happen again unless they do something about it. Honestly if they just remade the mkiv supra I would love to buy it instead of this new garbage.

      you guys are cray, for a futuristic car this thing is spot on and is damn sexy. be more open minded to how sport cars are goin to come to be in the next 20 years cause this is it. yes i LOVE my 90's jdm cars dont get me wrong, mr2, supra, skyline, rx7 ect.... However like they said toyota hasnt done shit in 15 years sports car wise. So if this is the first thing they bring back to the line up id be more then happy. Thing is what is the price tag on this?! im guessing around GTR type pricetag. at least 80k for this thing! so it best have some serious nuts!

    I saw this concept on display at Festival of speed, and next to a mk4 Supra, it just looks like progression. The FT1 kinda reminds me of a TVR Sagaris with the lairy vents and fastback styling, but Toyota build quality. Hope they aren't insane money?!

    • @mrolskul
      @mrolskul Před 10 lety

      Tomislav Zvonimir Sadly, the same thing happened to Audi back in the 80's (which nearly broke the company). However, after testing and re-testing, no one, and I do mean no one from all the labs, independent and otherwise, could recreate the phenomenon. I all goes back to the user. There are many people who drive with two feet while operating an automatic vehicle. I can pick them out in traffic as their brake lights flicker on and off while they try to hover their left foot over the brake pedal while accelerating/maintaining forward momentum. This makes for these kinds of false claims. Unfortunately, it takes all kinds to make the world go around.

    • @mrolskul
      @mrolskul Před 10 lety +9

      Tomislav Zvonimir You're right. Audi was nowhere to be found in the 70's. It was a lonely stepchild while Toyota, like it or not, was breaking ground with reliability and quality, a fact which Audi cannot match to this day. I should know, I was around back then to witness it first hand, Now, if you are talking styling and personal likes, that's a different story. But love it or hate it, Toyota is the gold standard when it comes to good, reliable, run till you drop, cars. The mere fact that VW, Audi's parent company, charges top dollar for their products, doesn't make them superior to Toyota. Besides, if you want a luxury brand vehicle, then Lexus has that covered. All you have to do is see the ton of awards Toyota/Lexus has garnered in the last three decades, a feat Audi cannot match. In the end, my money always goes to the manufacturer who will provide me with a vehicle that will last for decades to come, which is why I'm still driving my 29 year-old Corolla GT-S.

    • @MRsteezy123
      @MRsteezy123 Před 10 lety +2

      Tomislav Zvonimir are you serious? Toyotas make way better engines than audis..audis are infact trash they break down frequently and require lots of maintenance and when you need to buy a part they are 4 x as expensive any part Chrysler, gm,toyota, and Honda....Audis are like bmw they have a name to them but they got piss poor reliability and you gotta find a mechanic that specializes in audis because they use allot more electronic technology then toytota.....Toyota is the type of car if it brakes you can fix it and take it apart with a wrench and screwdriver..audi you gonna need special tools for certain things like brakes for example..lets not forget the fact that Toyota created a bulletproof engine that can handle 1500 hp easy the 2jz yea lemme know when audi creates a 3.0 l that can handle 1500 hp

    I wonder just how much hate mail Toyota has been getting over the past year for false advertising. They unveil this beauty causing our jaws to drop and leaving us eagerly anticipating the car's final production release only to be presented with something that hardly bears any resemblance to the original concept at all. Do they really think they could get away without any negative backlash?
