Dr. Martens is one of the most iconic boots of all time, deeply tied to various music countercultures in the latter half of the 20th century.
Weird fact: the guy who started it all, Dr. Klaus Märtens, was a doctor in the Nazi army toward the very end of World War 2. He injured his foot skiing, didn’t like how Nazi boots felt as he was healing, so he made his own boots with rubber from Luftwaffe airfields after the war.
So in an industry that’s now jam packed with shanks, Goodyear welts, space age soles, and zillion dollar leathers, does the old 1460 still hold up?

    OVERVIEW
A super uncomplicated boot without much stitching, Dr. Martens calls this “full grain leather” but it’s so corrected and thin that it looks like plastic. Otherwise the most notable features are the bouncy rubber sole and the trademark yellow stitching going around the welt. The shaft is also pretty high at over 7 inches, so make sure you have long socks.
    LEATHER
It’s true that some people are comfortable calling a leather both full grain and corrected. Horween’s famous full grain leather Chromexcel is considered lightly corrected, for example. (Horween themselves told me that.)
But I’m wary of being told I’m an idiot for calling something “full grain corrected grain” so I’m calling this corrected grain. It’s from either South America or Asia (that’s all they could tell me) and while they say it’s “famously stiff,” I found it more thin and plasticky than anything else.
One cool thing is that you can get these in just about any color you can imagine (they have several floral patterns) and there’s even a Chromexcel if you want to pay the extra.
WATCH MY MOST POPULAR VIDEO, RED WING VS WOLVERINE: • FIGHT! Red Wing Vs. Wo...
    LEATHER CARE
Use their “Wonder Balsam,” which is made mostly of lanolin, beeswax, and coconut oil. I know a lot of people just use coconut oil, but the beeswax is important for weatherproofing. If that’s your priority though, they also sell a product called Dubbin Polish to add a layer of wax to the outside.
    SOLE
The main event, this sole is definitely my favorite part of the shoe. It’s soft but not too soft and it has great traction and shock absorption. It’s a little squeaky on indoor surfaces, but this may abate with time.
After the rubber sole there’s a cork midsole and some polyurethane foam, which would help with the shock absorption.
Downsides: there’s no shank and it’s extremely hard to resole. Some people specialize in Dr. Martens soles, but don’t expect to be able to resole them.

    FIT & SIZING
Size down one half or one full size. They have no half sizes available and no other widths, which will disappoint a ton of people.
In general, this doesn’t fit the foot super well. It has a blobby, generic shape that didn’t contour the natural shape of my foot well.
    PRICE
Between $120 and $145. If you’re patient, it’s not hard to find a place where they’re on sale.
    VERDICT
    Dr. Martens Pros
    • Inexpensive
    • Sole is super soft
    • Pretty water resistant
    • Casual, can be worn with a t-shirt
    • Cultural icon
    Dr. Marten Cons
    • Laces come undone easily
    • Difficult to resole
    • Doesn’t fit very well, pretty shapeless
    • Lack of a shank
    • Thin, plasticky leather
    • Not versatile
    • Not very mature or masculine
I don’t love these shoes. Read my full review for more of my reasoning - Google “stridewise dr martens.”

I've been wearing Doc Martens here in the UK since 1973 when I was thirteen and I still love them. After the break-in period they're like slippers. Now, at 57, I'm the 'old man' you speak of. And guess what? I really don't care too much what others think because I have comfortable, relatively hard wearing footwear that doesn't cost the earth. Being an older man, wearing hard leather soled shoes/boots feels like someone gently tapping the back of your head with a small wooden mallet for every step. Not so with my trusty old DM's. Right now I have two pairs, the 1460 you have here and the limited 'For Life' run (now discontinued, but still honoured) both in black.. If I live long enough to need a new pair, I'll be getting the Made In England version in the tan colour. If people are so shallow that they think an 'older man' looks childish because of his footwear then that's cool as well. Better than being ignored completely (which is what happens when you get older)......

Feminine? Yes. Actually, a lot of nice the men's clothes that gained traction on men's fashion advice channels like slim jeans, white button-downs, and shirt -sleeve v-neck tees have a subtle feminine edge. I believe fashion is best when the best elements of masculine and feminine design are brought together without anyone realizing it.

Button-down shirts? Feminine? Button-down shirts (or Polo collars, as known by Brooks Brothers) were used by Polo players to keep their collars from flapping all over the place.
Jeans only became slim because they were slowly incorporated into the fashion cycle. As evidenced by LVC (not the best source, but easiest to find), the 1922 jean is much wider than those from the 50s and 60s, despite the 20s and the 60s having a similar pendulum swing in silhouette.
What I mean to say by all of this is that there's frankly nothing feminine about these clothing. Not to say that you're wrong, in fact I quite agree. But one needs to recognise where the femininity comes from. Jeans, for example, have meant masculinity, ruggedness and toughness for a century now.

I have had the same pair of Dr. Martens for 5 years. I wear them multiple times a week. I have worn them to 10+ music festivals. They are so comfortable and they keep my feet dry and warm. The leather stays in great condition if you just moisturize them every 6 months or so. The sole hardly has any wear at all, and they are awesome for climates where we get a lot of snow. They have a lot of grip.

If you review that boot you'll find it's perfect for being on your feet all day, has a more versatile silhouette but definitely won't last as long as traditional Docs as the leather is super soft and they've used weight reducing technology throughout the shoe to make more comfortable for the average person right out of the box. A Doc purist's worst nightmare, but probably will be a great seller. I'm lucky to own the shoes and boots I do, and I realise not everyone can dish out the money, but you really do come off as "pretentious" because all I can glean from this review is you are a snobby, rich man who hates shoes that are $140, you also personally look down men over 30 by calling them feminine, and that they should get with the times, what you said is insulting. Hey Brandon, thanks for your comment. I have to say I don't think a shoe being cheap is a bad thing at all, I'm a huge cheapskate and value for money is a big priority. It's why I think Thursday ($199) is the best boot on the market and I really like Timberlands and LL Bean shoes which are around the same price. I just don't like these boots in particular, for a bunch of reasons outside looking cheap.

Interesting review on an iconic boot. I have owned one pair years ago, they were brown shoes and actually the leather and quality was quite good. The sole didn't excite me so much. Too squeeky and squishy for me but I enjoyed the style. I'm surprised they told you it's a goodyear welted boot because cobblers usually wont touch these for any sole problems. Apparently the welt is made of PVC (not leather like most boots) and the sole is then heat melted onto the welt. Seems like an unusual process but it's worked for them and it probably is very securely attached and won't separate. Essentially they are-throw away boots once the sole is worn out. For the price, that might be fine for some. Thanks again for your excellent reviews. I always watch them.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  Před 5 lety +4

Yeah like I said, I think they call it a Goodyear welt because the upper is attached to the PVC welt which is then attached to the sole, as opposed to it being directly attached to the sole so they can get away with saying Goodyear welt but I feel like they're playing kind of fast and loose with those definitions haha. But yeah, very few cobblers will even attempt to resole these. Glad you liked the video, Duke!

Firstly, Dr Martens are also made in Vietnam, and Vietnam make the half sizes. Dr Martens certainly do have a shank. I have cut the soles of several pairs of DM's to see what's inside the sole. Personally, I think they would be better off without the shank. DM's have a wooden shank that can actually break in half from severe flexibility (possibly from squatting), and then that break can cause a popping sound within the sole when walking. One thing that shits me about DM's is that the welt is only stitched to the leather upper. It needs to be glued as well, otherwise there can be squeaking caused by the welt being able to move independently and rub against the leather. This tends to happen when the yellow stitching loosens slightly from wear. Apart from all this, I love Dr Martens. I am 44 and have worn them for years and have many pairs. I wear 8, 10 and 14 hole DM's. They are not a boot for Nazis. DM's are popular among skinheads because they were a working class boot during the 70's-80's, and traditional skinheads are working class. Real Nazis will never wear DM's because they moved production to Asia, and no self-respecting Nazi is going to wear Asian-made boots. The English DM's have stronger, more porous leather and a stronger sole that doesn't wear down as quickly. They were never designed to be a fashion boot for teenagers. In England they were the boot issued for factory workers, Police that patrolled on foot, the postman delivering letters on foot, school students and I think even the military at one point. Despite what they have now become, DM's were a working mans boot that became popular with punk bands, skinheads and the working class British due to their durability and quality, and as long as you buy English-made DM's, there's no reason why they shouldn't remain that way with grown men.

I happened to work in Northamptonshire and we had a factory shop in rushden diamonds football club. Not far from their factory in Wollaston.
You seem quite critical about DMs. However I always end up buying a new pair every few years.
Main reason being, I have two pairs of docs since over 25 years which refuse to die. The leather has remained good and the soles haven’t come off.
One of them is a pair of made in England work boots. Simply indestructible.
Another pair is I think 3818. After 25 years the print is a bit faded.
I would never have expected any boots to last that long. But mine did, used regularly and still comfortable
However. I did have a bad experience with crazy horse 2976 Chelsey boots where the elastic went wonky and soles started to come off both boots. DM gave me replacement as it was in warranty period.
    Inspite of that;
Last month I bought 2976 nubuck. They are ultra comfortable.
I’m tempted to buy their made in England chelsie boot but I’ll hang on for now.

LOL Funny how many of you call these boots femenine. Firts they werw not developped by any nazi doctor, but by a exmilitary one who designed boots with aircushioned soles to be used for people with foot injuries. Then the patent was bought by an english factory. For those of you who desn't know, Doc Martens, when stablished in the UK, was the TO GO boot for hard workers: thought leather, antislip rubber sole, air cushioned to make it confortable to wear the whole working day and with steel toe cover to avoid accidents. This was, again, a workers boot from the fifties till the 80. They were adopted by early skinheads in the sixties (there were not right wingers at that time) as a sign of working class identity, same as many boots in the USA like the Timberlands. Then in the late 70's it became the shoe for punk, new wave, afterpunk, mods.. they were not as expensive, thougt and cool to wear. I have owned made in UK Martens and they were excellent for the money, the sole was very hard to wear, they held to your knee and the cushios sole made them extremely confortable. A thought boot made for the city. When the factories moved to China and other countries the quality dropped down

After watching a number of your videos, Nick, I’m confident that you provide a fair and accurate assessment of this boot. I’ve learned that Doc Martens aren’t necessarily for me. For starters, having a boot which is taller than my socks would drive me crazy. On the other hand, they are quite reasonably priced which might make this a good “starter” boot for a younger person. I look forward to seeing your new productions and this video did not fail. Great job!

  • @GoGHShrimp
    @GoGHShrimp Před 5 lety +1

Regarding the shape of the boot, the blobby-ness of doc Martens suck if your foot doesn't fit that well. But part of the purpose of the break-in period of doc Martens is reshaping the shoe, to better fit the feet that are wearing the shoes. Whether or not the break in period hurts, it is loosening the material so that the boot feels more unique to your foot. The reason why a lot of people support doc Martens, I find, is the comfort it provides. In fact, that is why they were even made. doc Martens have become a stylish boot, commonly associated with people who consider themselves as rebels or outcasts, etc. When I received my 1460s, the leather was very stiff and so I didn't even think about the thickness of the leather. However, the thickness of the leather didn't seem to have much of an effect on anything. Doc Martens do tend to have a squeaking problem, but I have seen a video that shows a solution if the squeaking is a problem. As stated earlier in the video, the boots mold to your feet, so how exactly did you expect them to fit? although, I do agree that there should maybe be a a wider version available. One thing I find great about doc Martens, is the association with the ability to do whatever you want, wearing them however pleases you most.

I picked up a pair of their Leos (unfortunately discontinued) a while back and they have almost none of the issues that the 1460s have. Thicker leather with a more matte charcoal color, flannel(ish) lining, and less corrected leather that has aged surprisingly well. I've had them for nearly 6 years and they definitely look good considering all the abuse I've put them through. The lugs on the sole are about half of their original size and polished smooth and the heel is starting to separate, but they still keep my feet dry and look damn decent doing it

@Stridewise - I understand what you mean. I think that it's the black color that sometimes comes off a little as "in-your-face" or "attitudey." But if you get them in the brown leathers, like Gaucho or Aztec, they look much better and supple. Kind of a rugged work/hiking boot vibe. I'm 32 and I own a pair of Gaucho's, and in my opinion, the browns are much more subtle and "adult looking." And also more versatile for different casual outfits. Also with the brown, I think the yellow stitching matches much better. ...Like a construction boot. I personally like them as a no fuss, ready for action type of boot. It's just convenient that they're pretty much enjoyable right out of the box. At least that's been my experience with them (twice). Plus I have a bit of a wide foot and a high foot slope, so it's a bit difficult for me to find a boot that agrees with my foot. However, I am curious about those Thursday Captain boots (in wide) and the Blundstone Dress Series Chelsea Boots. A review on those would be cool (and helpful). Anyways, those were just my thoughts. I'm over 50 and still have the first pair of docs I bought in 1980. I have also had about a dozen other DMs since then with varying degrees of satisfaction - they definitely played with sizing over time. For sure the newer production is not the same and I can't get a fit in any style any more. The last pair I had did not last very long either Luckily I have been able to move to John Fluevogs - he worked with DM and always has some street/stompy boots that I can wear. I have been in boots that style since I was a teen, and for people who do a lot of walking in the city, they are a great alternative to sneakers without being overly formal, and now they have styles that are more office appropriate or for people who have to stand all day.
There's really not much you can say about the styling of DMs - if you don't like them, you don't like them.

Tbh, I own a pair of Docs and I wear them almost every day. I've been wearing them every day to work where I walk/run 5-10 miles for the past year and a half, I wear them on most of my days off, and they have held up really nicely. They look a little worn down (in fairness though, i don't do anything to take care of them at all. If I cleaned them they'd probably look nice again), but they are still extremely comfortable and thick enough to protect my poor little ankles from my clumsiness. The only drawback is that it isn't from their work boot line, so they have no grip at all.
I do recommend them to everyone who asks for a work shoe recommendation. They are, in my experience, durable and comfy enough for most jobs, and they aren't horrendously ugly so you can wear them outside of work, too.
All that being said, I'm really bummed out at the comments about other peoples docs not holding up as well as mine. Makes me reeeaaallly reconsider buying another pair :^(

“Inorganic rubber”. Lol. That’s a fancy way of saying PVC or Vinyl. I’m 38 and used to love DM. I’ve tried 2 pair since they moved their operations to China and both have been trash compared to the English made one.
Now I own a shoe repair shop and have seen my share of these come through the door, they really can be resoled but there’s no point as it changes the look and feel and costs about the same as new ones. The best things to do is a thing half some and heel, kind of like a retread really. It’s cheaper and retains the look and feel of the DM sole.
I wear mostly Alden boots now every day, if I ever come across a nice vintage pair of DMs I’ll pick them up but I’m not giving the Chinese ones a 3rd try.

    • @mcearl8073
      @mcearl8073 Před 5 lety

Stephen Hauer There’s a few reasons they are hard to resole. It mostly boils down to how they’ll look and feel when they are done and what’s available for us to use. With the soles available I’d either have to make them heavier and firmer with a solid rubber sole or use something like the vibrant Gumlite soles that are no where near as durable. Both options will make them look different since they won’t have that translucent look to them and they won’t have that ridged finish on the edge.
It’s also much more difficult to glue anything onto the vinyl welt. The original ones have vinyl soles too and are melted together. There are ways of doing it, especially with modern cements but The majority of cements a lot of the old timer guys use for leather and rubber just don’t work on PVC.
It really just boils down to it being very close to the cost of new boots for them to be grossly different than they were as new in both look and feel where as something like a redwing is usually less than 1/2 the cost of new to resole, sometimes much less on the more expensive brands and they get restored back to exactly how they were when new. So it’s not really that they are hard in general, it’s just hard to make it worth it unless the person wants something different, like a colored sole or something.

And considering I own over 20pairs of docs and you have never had your hands on the MIE 1460.....you are very unclear how much different they really are. A 1460 MIE is a thick stiff leather that requires lots of break in. You also need to consider that they made lots of versions of the MIE 1460 over the years. The England factory cobblers also make Solovairs, btw. The MIE stuff is a completely different boot. If you buy a doc you know what you are buying, you understand the present overseas nature of the less expensive versions. It's not designed to be a boot to be the compared to the others you described. I just do not think you get it. I love the exact boot you are reviewing. Looking at the 1460 for example, which is what most people think of when they think of Docs, I see them as a jeans and T-shirt boot. I’m not sure what else someone would do with them, but I’m a simple man and not a fashion guy as it were. I have the “greasy” 1460 myself which are very comfortable. Though I’ve never seen them as feminine, I definitely would not call them mature looking by any stretch. Were it not for a strong nostalgic attachment I wouldn’t have any. Again, they belong in their own place and deservedly so. But, I wouldn’t put them on all fours with boots like Alden’s or Red Wings or the like.

Yeah this is a good comment, they're a different category to most boots and there are few boots you can wear with a t-shirt, which I point out.

I have had my Greasy Black Dr.Martens for almost a year and a half now and still great.

I am really confused with everyone saying the Dr.Marten soles are long lasting. Just over a year ago I purchased a pair of Lombardo Grizzley's and have worn them smooth already. I reached out to the company, and was told that "normal wear and tear is not covered." A year of sole wear when I work in a cubicle environment was very disappointing to me.
Has anyone else had results like this?
