I just did this to my 500, as the LOP is waaaay to much even for a 6 foot tall guy. I did pretty much the same thing. DIdn't come out perfect, but pretty true, and with my home made recoil pad, length of pull is now 12 3/4". Hell of a lot nicer to shoot. Nice work. :)
Depends on the outline and demensions of the stock. Look for a recoil pad template you can print out. It will let you know what size to buy. There are several sizes. If not correct sized pad you will run out of rubber material and have the metal base layer protruding trough the sides

You're smart, you know...
progress! get er done :)
I need to shorten the stock of the 500 as well. My question is for the recoil pad. Can I sand it down so that it will fit with the shortened stock?

@@willwood487 thank you for the tips and the videos. I will take sometime to watch them.
I'm pretty sure that's A bone saw hoss..
scattergunman I am pretty sure it's a wood saw that came with a plastic miter box. It was what I first grabbed out the shop. Worked out fine though.
That’s a miter saw bud
What is the purpose of taking that much off the stock?
Shortened the length of pull and added a one inch thick recoil pad for my wife
