  • In today's episode, Tafty (that's me) explains how to tune and intonate the Buzz Feiten Tuning System on an Anderson guitar using a Korg DT-7 tuner. Ever wonder what this system does? Or have one and don't fully understand it? Come on into my Massachusetts shop and let's figure it out.
    In the first video of my "what's this on my guitar??" series, I'll do my best to show some ways of tuning and intonating a guitar with this system provided from the factory.
    By the way-I've left out the "Tune to E" method- there are a ton of videos on this already. And this is not about the theory of this system.

    I tune intonate my Washburn wi25 equipped with the BFTS, normally as you do on a normal guitar. Regular tune and intonate on the 12th fret. But next restring I will try to intonate the way you did, on the 3rd and 15th fret. Thanks for the advice.

    Thanks for the video and have a Korg DT-7 that I bought some years ago. As you asked for input, with a 'Feitenized' guitar and once in the DT-7's BFTS intonation mode, the manual it says that after selecting the type of guitar, (bass, acoustic or electric) tune each string to 'open' tuning (1-6) to the centre LED lights. Thereafter to select/switch over within the BFTS 'open' to the BFTS '12th' fret on the fretted note so to set the intonation to the centre LED light on each string via the respective saddle. Finally, back to the 'open' BFTS tuning to pitch @ the centre LED lights. ... Although as the DT-7 is not available to purchase new now and as you recommend, it's more a case taking the guitar's nut out of the equation by using the 3rd and 15th frets. ... (Btw, I've also read that this is the way it's done at Suhr Guitars which have installed the BFTS on some models).

    I had BFTS installed on several guitars some years ago. I don’t use that Korg tuner. Peterson strobe tuners can support BFTS. One lives on my pedalboard. Another is a clip on I use when not using the board.

    The Korg DT7 seems pretty cool especially for setting intonation. I was always taught to tune a guitar with the BFTS to just tune each string at their respective E fret to E with standard tuner. I never gave any thought to the science behind that method but was told that method is recommended by the Buzz Feiten team when using a standard tuner.

    Hey Tafty, great video.
    I have 2 Washburn's V260's that have the Buzz Feiten Tuning System I had never heard of it before so, thanks for the informative video.
    The tuner (Korg
    DT-7), you used for this video does not see to be available anymore.
    So, after you do the intonation or the set-up is done I can tune it normally, meaning I can put the tuner in normal mode tuning?
    Thanks!

    I have a Tom Anderson tele. It has compensated saddles. How do i intonate it? The saddles moves 2 strings at the same time.

    • @TaftysGuitars
      @TaftysGuitars  Před 2 lety

      Much the same way that you compensate a standard tele bridge at any scale length. Intonate the larger of the strings on each saddle, then check the smaller of the 2, and compromise a bit between the them. Unfortunately that's the way with double saddles. Have a great day!

  • @goneflying140
    @goneflying140 Před 2 lety +1

    I have found that the lower string heights are at the nut, the less you need to compensate.

    • @TaftysGuitars
      @TaftysGuitars  Před 3 lety

      I think the best way to get the most out of it is to either get a tuner (or at the least, a tuner app), with the BFTS settings built in. That way you can quickly tune it correctly and take advantage of the system. There are also videos out there explaining the "tune to E" method.

    That actually wrong info. Intonating from the 3rd to the 15 totally negates the Buzz Feiten system. The Feiten tuning system has offsets for open strings and intonation setting. You essentially tuned the guitar to the Feiten offsets after eradicating the intonation offsets. Also, intonating the guitar the way you are gives a false reading. You're depressing the neck when you press down on the string which makes the note go flat. You need to intonate in a playing position.

    You didn't play the guitar to demonstrate the accuracy unfortunately. We just have to take your word for it. Also, you should be doing the intonation in playing position, not with the guitar neck resting on the neck-rest, as it applies extra pressure to the neck, creating unnatural tension. I appreciate the information you gave us, unfortunately I believe your approach and application to be flawed. Just my 2 cents(tuning joke)

    It's pronounced like "fightin." It's German, or plays on German rules of pronunciation which makes the second vowel pronounced and long; the opposite of English pronunciation.
