  • Well, with all the problems our beloved MTH GP38-2 Number 306 loco has had, I decided to get myself the NEC SB5 Smart Booster and EB-1 Circuit Breaker for Christmas. We're going to install those and then do another big loco test to see if it makes a difference!
    Thanks Robert ‪@FlyingCrow‬ for the advice and recommendations.

    Freaked me out at the end, but then read the comments and noticed you dialed it in and that happened earlier. That was not nice, Just Kidding. Glad to see it all working, or I guess it does? I like your HO layout cause it is small like my N Scale one. And your scenes are awesome and inspire me for my tiny N Scale layout. Can't wait for the next update to see IF it is all still working with the new Booster? Maybe Santa will leave you a new locomotive or take a look at 306 for you :) I have 3 Atlas U25B's and have a piece of tap on the bottom of them numbered 5,6 and 7, as two are the same number and ONLY 3 digits at that. When they are running sometimes I have no clue which one is which. It's interesting when I have all 3 on the layout, unless on a Consist. Men and their toys :) And expensive ones at that.

      Haha thank you. I purposefully put that in at the end to see who was paying attention, ha ha. Yes, my channel is all about the smaller layouts and all the things you can do with them. I do have some expansion ideas for the future, but for right now, it’s a good size for me. Thank you for watching, and taking time to comment. I really appreciate it! 👍🏼

    Good vid of the upgrade. I have 235 feet of Kato unitrack amd a bus wore with 56 feeders going to a NCE power cab and I have ran 8 locos at once. Nothing "messed up" but I had to give more throttle for the same speeds with less locos. This we more than I typically run but it was just a test. I figure a SB5 would help in some form or fashion. Again. Good video covering what you did and the results!

    You know, you've got a ton of track in your layout. You might wavy to strongly consider breaking into districts, and then adding an eb1 to each district. My layout is a simple mainline, with 4 sidings, and a single pass through lane. But i have about 90 feet of track on it. I broke it into 4 districts and added an eb1 to each district. It makes it much easier to diagnose a potential issue, in a certain block. Then, if one block shorts, then I can only have the power off to that district.

    Nice upgrade, Dan! Plenty of power now for all kinds of consists and switching operations. I think once your 306 issue is cured too, you won't be popping breakers at the end of videos! haha

      Haha thanks Tom. The EB-1 has three dip switches for a variety of amperage tolerance options, the factory setting was way too sensitive. Even a caboose or boxcar slightly derailing would trip it. That “blooper” happened before I got it locked in. Haha I wanted to see if anybody would comment on it. Lol

    I've got a power cab and SB5, as well as another small operator cab..... hoping to get some bench work started soon...
    Have you added any cab panels to be able to plug in the cab at other locations? I plan to have the SB5 near one end of the yard/town, on one side of the room...and a panel at the other end of town as well as another panel on the opposite side of the room .... the main line for continuous running and a few out of town sidings will be one power district, the storage/staging track will be another district, and town will either be a 3rd or possibly 3rd AND 4th district.... doing around the walls of a room that is about 9x11ft.

      Hello Isaiah. Sounds like you’re all set to start a grand adventure! I did add a panel right on the front of my layout, exactly where my original one was simply to keep from having to plug directly into the SB5 and pulling on it (and it moving around) all the time. They daisy-chain together very easily, so I plan to add a few more like you said, when I eventually expand my layout with a two line main around the outside.

    Do you have a video of the wiring with the initial setup of the layout?

    • @DansGrandValley
      @DansGrandValley  Před rokem +1

      Hi Jason. In my video “update number 17“ I show how I wire in the NCE power cab. Prior to that all I had was a Bachmann EZ command controller that had two wires going to the rails. The NCE utilizes three feeds that I have scattered around the layout now. I think what you’re looking for, will be shown in this video, but I’m not sure. The only other wiring I did at the beginning of the layout was a positive and negative wire going up to the very top area where the little house and shop are now. Just so I could easily have power up there for lighting. Look around the 4:00 minute mark on update 17. Thanks.

    Couldn't you just get a larger 12v power supply instead of buying the booster?

    • @DansGrandValley
      @DansGrandValley  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The NCE Powercab comes with a 13.5v power supply already. It’s more a question of amperage draw. I was more confident buying their booster, than messing around with different power supplies, fearing I’d damage the powercab. Excellent question, thank you. 👍🏼
