Once I’ve had more time to figure this thing out (and how to film it) who wants to see a follow up video?

I'm new to stargazing. Uneducated, self educating. I knew nothing about telescopes in depth. Got a Starsense Explore LT127 AZ. It's a 5 inch. I was able to see the rings of Saturn quite clearly with just the 25mm eyepiece. Jupiter and it's bandings was clear along with it's four moons. Sky by me is heavy with light pollution. Got to see Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy, very clearly. The mount is very easy to operate. Keep posting videos.

Thanks for the comment! I’ll definitely do a follow up video to this one once the days get shorter. I need to check those out. I’m just not a night owl. 🤣

@@FunsizedAdventures Well I'll be waiting. I just went outside and saw jupiter and it's four moons. With the 25mm alone, it's so clear. Andromeda Galaxy, M31, was visible. A bit faint, due to heavy light pollution, these telescopes are amazing. Planning to invest in a good camera to do videos and photos. Who knows, I'll probably upload stuff in the future.

I think its a great choice for a homeschooler that is interested in basic astronomy. It would be an investment but would probably be used for years. I think the educational aspect of having the app lined up with what you are looking at is its biggest benefit. Studying our own solar system with its planets and constellations with this tool would be awesome.

Cool starter telescope. I remember the first time I looked through one and actually saw the craters on the moon.... Mind blown! I'd say for a couple hundred bucks it's a great starter for nubs like us.

So far the kids love playing with it during the day like it’s some sort of pirate spyglass. 🤣
I used it to look at a caterpillar nest that’s way up in a tree. I could see the individual caterpillars crawling around inside.

@FunsizedAdventures Yeah, when I was a kid in the 80s, my parents had an expensive Celestron C8 rig, and me and my sister would look at the houses miles across the lake where we lived as they ate dinner. Good times lol.

Good reflector telescopes use parabolic mirrors. That particular telescope (which I own) uses a spherical mirror which most manufactures use for their cheap line of telescopes. Spherical mirrors do not focus light properly. To compensate the manufacturer uses a special lens element (also called bird-jones design) in the bottom of the focuser to correct the focus of the light into one point. Apparently it's easier to make spherical mirrors than parabolic mirrors. Cheap telescope optics but the Starsense though is fantastic. I actually bought one of these telescopes and ripped off the Starsense phone/mount and put it on my 8" Dobsonian. Too bad Celestron doesnt sell just the Starsense mount. I actually had to spend $200 for this telescope just for the Starsense feature. Why bother making the telescope Celestron? Just sell the Starsense and mount and software for $150 and I would have bought it. Telescope is in my trash can as I write this.

These Celestrons and other "short tube reflectors" are not even Bird-Jones, but complete scams with zero legitimacy made from rejects dumpster trash:
Cheap Barlow from rejects dumpster doesn't correct anything and just degrades image further!
Bird-Jones, which used special expensive corrector in fixed position between primary and secondary mirrors, was valid design for its time when mass production of parabolic mirrors wasn't possible. Advances in manufacturing made it completely obsolete design also from cost perspective.

  • @rclines001

When looking at the stars, you first have to realize that almost every picture you have ever seen of space has been run through software to look better, clearer, and to bring out more colors. Even with my 8" dobsonian that has a tube that is like 5ft tall, you still don't see much more than a white blur when looking at Orion or Andromeda. If you want to see the colors, you need a camera that attaches and you take a timed picture and you "stack" the frames with software. This is why so many people lose interest so fast. They come in expecting too much right off the bat. What will blow your mind though is looking at planets like Jupiter and Saturn. I still get chills occasionally on a good clear night when I can make out the cloud bands on Jupiter or see some separation in the rings of Saturn. Also, invest in some decent eyepieces. For this size scope, stay in the 9mm to 25mm range, but buy several sizes. That being said, I still love staring at white dots with all my scopes, from my $89 ones to my $1500 one.

Thanks for the comment. I get everything you’re saying. I haven’t gotten a chance try Saturn or Jupiter yet most because of scheduling. It’s tough trying to keep up with what’s in the sky which night and then the weather variables on top of that. We did have a great time just looking at the moon recently though.

Hi. Congratulations for the video and is really nice but with all do respect, have you tried the 2X Barlow and also some eyepeaces like 8mm, 6mm, etc? I noticed exactly now that your telescope is not exactly like mine, mine is 127AZ a little larger but still... I think you can see nebulas and stuff, not like Hubble etc but still... I seen only moon thill now, Is not well calibrated because near me I seen only 100-150 meters so it should be at least double distance for a good calibration... But still, after seying amazing details of moon, with 25mm +25mm & 2x barlow so like 12.5 mm.... I will try tonight even witouth calibration to see more... P.S. IN my telescope case, a little larger stronger, I think already under 10 mm is too strong for moon, but I l test larger and also I l try some planets at least. Cheers from Romania.

I’ve tried a few different things but oddly enough, I just don’t think I’m enough of a night person to stay up late enough to use the telescope much. Maybe this autumn when the sun sets earlier I’ll try some more. Thanks for the info though!

Thanks for the review! That's exactly how it was for me. However, I think that as a prototype, this telescope is useful. I was also upset by the discrepancy between my expectations and reality. Nevertheless, the moon and the planets are quite watchable. all the best to you! Hello from Russia.

It looks quite a bit easier to set up and use them the one I had when I was a kid.
With that being said, astronomy just really isn't a huge interest of mine either. I look at it like this, ok, so I just saw the moon closer up then I can with my own eyes..... it's not something I really need to do over and over again.😂🤣

Thanks for the comments and I get what you’re saying. I’m just saying that as someone who knows nothing about telescopes, $250 seemed like a high enough price that my expectations probably were too high. Now that I’ve researched it more I can see that I’d need a $1000 telescope to live up to my preconceived notions. 🤣
