Because of your video I just purchased the Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ and received it 2 days ago. I just set it up and now learn how to use the StarSense app. WIll keep you posted.

@@MisterItchy the eye pieces are good enough for beginners. You can buy better eyepieces once you try the standard ones. I’ve had this instrument for almost 2 weeks and the standard eye pieces are sufficient. But I know I want to see more detail so I’ll be purchasing better ones. But try the standard ones and see if you like em.
I never found anything that said the starsense phone holder mirror is hidden by a curved cover, but comparing mine to yours led to me trying to uncover it and yay, I didn't break it.

The instructions on the app are pretty confusing so I was really at a loss - This was beyond helpful! I'm looking forward to trying it out with some knowledge of what the heck I'm actually doing :)
Thanks for this excellent review. I recently acquired this model of telescope, and found that it was pretty shaky. It was a little breezy, and I had trouble acquiring a decent image with a 7mm eyepiece. I found that if I rolled up a hand-towel and wedged it between the telescope and the tripod, it helped quite a bit.
Nice balanced review. You've convinced me to buy one of these but I think I'll go for the 102AZ refractor as I want the simplest set up and maintenance possible. Thank you from a novice astronomer in the UK.

I have had a lot of problems with this….I had iPhone SE and it would get caught in can’t locate objects loop and never came out of it….SO I upgraded to iPhone 14..So I did my align.I chose the moon easy right?? I followed the arrows to the Green bullseye I looked through my eyepiece and I’m looking at the weeds across the field…The scope was flat if not pointing down..The bullseye showed me on the moon….I have contacted Celestron support..They were No support..Told me to use the scope without the software….ANY help would be very much appreciated…

Just purchased this scope at Best Buy for $379. And absolutely love it! As far as upgrading the eyepiece, any recommendations? I just placed an order for the Celestron Observer’s Kit which comes with two 1.25" plossl eyepieces, 2x Barlow lens and some eye piece filters. I was just hoping that it would be an okay upgrade to get me started. I’m new to all this and wanna get well aquatinted with this scope before I drop thousands. Love your channel! Thank you for the support! Upgrading the 1.25” eyepieces are good choices if you get ones that have a nice field of view over 55° or so. Celestron Ultima, Explore Scientific 68°, and similar are all very good eyepieces for the money but they are still a little pricey per piece. But you can carry them through to any telescope in the future that accepts 1.25” (usually an industry standard)
Nice review! I am new to Astronomy ... I currently have an 8" Dob with a 27mm Panoptic 2" EP and a 8mm Delos 1.25" EP. I'm very interested in the DX 130 for a travel scope as we do a lot of camping (with a trailer). My question is would the 27mm & 8mm be a good match for the DX130? My hope is to find a travel scope that would be compatible with these eye pieces. Thanks again for the great review!
They absolutely would be compatible. They will be a great upgrade over the base included eyepieces. Any 1.25” good quality eyepieces will always be your friend in any telescope :)
Thank you. I just got this scope in and I'm new to telescopes 🔭, and I wasn't sure if you were supposed to remove that black cardboard piece on the back of the main mirror.
They will be similar but the advantages of the skywatcher is computer controlled and tracking. But it is a tabletop unit instead of a full height system. So you’ll need to decide which features appeal better to you, but optically they are nearly identical.
How distinguishable was the Lagoon Nebula when you found them in the eyepiece? Have you ever tried attaching a camera to it (cmos-style, not dslr)? Thanks! New to your channel, and enjoying it! 👍
The lagoon nebula under light polluted skies will require a nebula filter to be able to anything discernible other than the star cluster that accompanies it naturally. Because this is not a goto or tracking device hooking a camera of any variety is going to be a challenge as the target will constantly move through the eyepiece.
Thanks for your tutorial. I just got one of these and am very new to all of this. One thing that I'm confused about is that you didn't review the red dot finderscope setup, specifically the description "Aligning The Finderscope" that is in the manual. It seems like you just did an alignment with the phone app instead. Does the phone app render the red dot finderscope unnecessary? Am I correct that you only see the red dot when you look through the finderscope and the the red dot does not actually hit the target? What is the point of a red dot as opposed to just having crosshairs in the finderscope?
If you ever use the telescope manually the red dot finder should be lined up with your optical tube to ensure accurate pointing. But when you’re using the phone technology you don’t really need it all that much.

These mounts are too lightweight for DSLR and other cameras. Without tracking and computer guidance the target will move out of the telescope causing the images to blur since there are no motor tracking on it.

Yes the stock eyepieces are not the best, but I good budget friendly eyepieces are the Celestron X-Cel eyepieces. Those will be much better quality without breaking the bank. You can look at eyepieces sets but they aren’t always the best sometimes either.
I have the same problem. I bought a Celestron telescope - Star Sense Explore DX 130 and downloaded the applications for Android: SkyPortal (SkySafari 6) and StarSense Explorer. I would like to use SkyPortal to connect to the telescope, but when I click "Connect" I get an error message: "Celestron SkyPortal could not establish a wireless connection to the telescope. Make sure the telescope is plugged in and that you are connected to a WiFi network”. How do I connect the telescope to the WiFi network? Also, when I start StarSense Explorer, a message appears: "Device not compatible, unfortunately your device hardware is not compatible with Starsense." My phone is a Xiaomi Mi Max 3 with Android 10 and I don't understand why the program doesn't work. Can someone help me? A thousand thanks!
completely new to the hobby, looking for my first scope. This one caught my eye because of the software. Its a bit out of my price range at $420, but I'm willing to spend the money. However i just have read some bad reviews on this scope and its holding me back from hitting buy now. I want to see planets, and nebula mainly. With the occasional galaxy. I'm worried that what this scope comes with wont be able to give me what I'm looking for. I know you can purchase different eye pieces, I just don't think that's in the budget as well since I will need to purchase a laser collimator. Any advice? Thank in advance.
Shop around and look for discounted deals like Amazon prime warehouse deals or used ones on eBay. I believe the bad reviews are mostly because of the collimating process can be daunting. As for eyepieces a few cheaper ones will work but once you get familiar with which sizes you like the most “ie use most” buy more expensive ones. You get what you pay for when it comes to eyepieces and they are standard sizes so you can use them on other telescopes.
The eye pieces that come with are low power. They just get you started, but the kit comes with an adApter where you can install large powerful eye pieces. Each eye piece in the 200 dollar range.
After watching your video I bought the Barlow Lens 2x but I can’t fit it onto the eye piece holder so can you tell me what I’m missing to for this on the StarSense Explorer DX 130? Thanks so much
You’ll need to make sure it’s a 1.25” Barlow lens. You’ll insert the Barlow into the focuser first and then the eyepiece into the Barlow to achieve the 2x magnification bump.
Hello from Australia. Like other commenters have already said, you have convinced me to buy this telescope. I do have a question though. Would I be able to mount a DSLR on this? I know how to do it but I wonder if the mount is sturdy enough to support a Nikon or Canon DSLR.
We don't need to attach another phone at the eye piece to click pictures right? the one that helps in finding celestial objects through software will be able to take clear pictures too right?
A close streetlight isn't the best target to align the system on. Polaris is a superior target. It's a point, and it doesn't move. Get it centered in a high power eyepiece, and set it on the screen crosshairs on maximum zoom. Bingo, you have the most precise alignment possible.
Hey! I just had a quick question. With this telescope are you able to see the cloud bands on Jupiter, or would you need to purchase a better eyepiece, or is this telescope just not good enough for that? Thanks and have a good day!
My personal preference has always been Explore Scientific but there’s many brands and styles out there. Typically for Saturn and planetary viewing you’ll want something under 15mm to get higher magnification. So eyepieces in the 6-14mm range are good choices
If you pick the scope up by grabbing it by the front aperture you WILL knock your secondary off by stretching the vanes holding it. Ask me how I know that? If your primary mirror doesn't have a center spot, typically a doughnut or a triangle you won't notice you messed up the front mirror. Does that scope's primary have a center? If not I'd put one on, it isn't hard. You know when you take the center mirror obstruction into account a 6" reflector is the equivalent of a 4" refractor's light gathering power, well a little more, but not a lot.

It will do a pretty good job at showing you nice views of the craters and surface features of the moon! You will have to invest in some Barlows and higher power eyepieces to really get close to the planets and closeup deep crater views on the moon but with a non tracking telescope it will be difficult to keep them in the eyepieces as the higher magnification you go, the faster the object will move due to the earths rotation. But this is a fantastic telescope to see your first views of the moon, galaxies, clusters and such with enough light gathering and quality optics that will give you lots to look at!
@@vinnygoombatts1458 Okay, that means you're out of focus. Find a big, easy target like the moon and make sure it's showing up in the eyepiece. Then slowly turn the focuser until you start to see real detail on the moon. The spider (the metal crossbars that hold the secondary mirror) and the dot will disappear as you near correct focus.
Celestron makes a good budget zoom from 8-24. This would allow you to stay in a decent power range. You'll need barlows to get any closer but the closer you get the faster the object will move out of the eyepiece. So keep that in mind when wanting magnification.
as far as I'm concerned, the app doesn't work, it always says it can't find the telescope, and the quality is also terrible, a toy that costs 500 dollars, I took it and destroyed it and put some garden flowers in it. The only use
SkEye app does a better job and it's free, so I just grabbed myself a 4.5" 114EQ Powerseeker with a motor drive for far less money, and a far better EQ mount setup. It's also a long tube and not a birddog like these StarSense models.
But it's only on Android, which is dumb, because hundreds of millions of iPhone/ios users can't use it. The developers are missing out on millions of dollars from people who would buy the SkEye Pro version. And it's called Bird-Jones, not Birddog.

Yes you can! Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn are the most impressive as you can usually see them brightly and with details of their clouds, surface markings and the rings!

can you not put a brick in the center of the stand on the rack against that wobbling, or mount it in a bag underneath with a hook?

Yes you can! You’ll need a higher magnification eyepieces, something below 10mm but absolutely achievable!!

Nice intro video. Just wondering what phone you were using? I tried 2 different phones and the celestron app wouldn't work on either of them.
Using an iPhone 11, and I’ve tested on a newer 13 as well. Both work great
Their app really seems to prefer iphones. I had a bunch of issues with my android phones but bought a $50 iphone 6 and it works perfect.

Could you actually see the nebula or just a few stars clustered with the black Ness of space?

I don’t have much experience with the refractor variant but yes always inspect after receiving one and return if necessary.

Hello ! How would you rate this telescope for a beginner, i just want to explore the sky, see with good quality & zoomed in - the moon. Thanks :)
It will do a pretty good job at showing you nice views of the craters and surface features of the moon! You will have to invest in some Barlows and higher power eyepieces to really get close to the planets and closeup deep crater views on the moon but with a non tracking telescope it will be difficult to keep them in the eyepieces as the higher magnification you go, the faster the object will move due to the earths rotation. But this is a fantastic telescope to see your first views of the moon, galaxies, clusters and such with enough light gathering and quality optics that will give you lots to look at!
I have had this scope for almost 2 years now, I can't figure out why I see the back of my scope looking through the eye piece. Any ideas?
the back of it? Are you seeing a black dot in the center?

@@XShadowAngel if I take off the front cover of the telescope, that's the pattern I see. I see the small mirror it holds in the center.
@@vinnygoombatts1458 Okay, that means you're out of focus. Find a big, easy target like the moon and make sure it's showing up in the eyepiece. Then slowly turn the focuser until you start to see real detail on the moon. The spider (the metal crossbars that hold the secondary mirror) and the dot will disappear as you near correct focus.

Celestron makes a good budget zoom from 8-24. This would allow you to stay in a decent power range. You'll need barlows to get any closer but the closer you get the faster the object will move out of the eyepiece. So keep that in mind when wanting magnification.

as far as I'm concerned, the app doesn't work, it always says it can't find the telescope, and the quality is also terrible, a toy that costs 500 dollars, I took it and destroyed it and put some garden flowers in it. The only use
SkEye app does a better job and it's free, so I just grabbed myself a 4.5" 114EQ Powerseeker with a motor drive for far less money, and a far better EQ mount setup. It's also a long tube and not a birddog like these StarSense models.
But it's only on Android, which is dumb, because hundreds of millions of iPhone/ios users can't use it. The developers are missing out on millions of dollars from people who would buy the SkEye Pro version. And it's called Bird-Jones, not Birddog.

Can you view planets with this telescope?
Yes you can! Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn are the most impressive as you can usually see them brightly and with details of their clouds, surface markings and the rings!
