  • Welcome to the Newport Railway Museum!
Seeing the preserved locomotives and Victorian railway items is always a treat and a special sight to see, seeing all these locomotives is really something special, the museum is also home to H Class “Heavy Harry” the largest locomotive in the southern hemisphere!

Hi. It was great to see Newport Workshops. 64 and still love trains. A nicely presented video. I enjoyed the walk with you. Hello to all the old gunzsels out there. Fond memories of many BBQ evenings and steamrail trips! Greetings from Dimboola, in Victoria, Australia. 😊

Fun fact the last Australian standard Garrett was at the railway museum for a while after fyansford replaced the railway with a convar belt and now G33 is at the Bellarine railway being fully restored

Being a fully enclosed cab it was a great place to shelter during one very wet visit to the museum. I understand that it would have got very hot it it was working hard for an extended time. But in cool wet Tasmania it wasn't such a bad place to be. If I recall correctly a crew was suffocated inside one of these cabs in a tunnel in Western Australia. The engine stalled on an upgrade and the tunnel was small. The crew couldn't escape over the tender as they could in a tender engine.

The H220 is certainly a big engine at 260 ton, but the 6000 class of NSW railways is 5 tons heavier. Being a 4-8-2 plus 2-8-4 garret the jury is still out on which would pull more. The 6000 class still run on heritage outings which is just shameful to us as H220 just languishes away.🇦🇺

Great video mate. I have been wanting to visit the Newport Railway Museum for a long time now but just have not had the opportunity to do so. There are some great bits of railway history there.

Shame the S class never got into preservation. Feel like that's a missing loco that any museum or heritage group would love to have to display/run.
Also fun fact about the Heavy Harry name living on. I've heard it used to refer to a specific Q relay still in use on the network for points circuits. Heavier than other standard Q relays I've handled.

It’s honestly terrible for Y108 and its lack of boiler cladding and overall parts like handrails.
