I thought that I was all alone in loving these1930 and1940 movies, but I have discovered that I am part of a large community. Thank you for sharing my passion.
You are in very good company. I watched these movies with my mother (who saw them live at the time they were issued), and I learned to love the cinematography, the stars (Melvyn D, especially) and all the Depression-era gaudiness. Enjoy them!
Funny !! And Very interesting !! I'm 76 and really appreciate these movies without cursing or nastiness. Makes most of the movies of today look So creepy !!
this film was very funny! lots of memorable scenes, including the classroom ones with all the little personalities at their art class....one worth watching over and over, to get all the goodies from it! great one liners. Once upon a time...one liners were a staple of ordinary life. Very few people these days have either the sense of humour or quickness of intelligence to deliver these whiz bangers, one after the other. Love it.
Years of fluoride in the water, ridiculously overloaded vaccine schedules and drugs with toxic side effects, poor food nutrition due to synthetic fertilizers and toxins allowed in prepared “convenience” foods…thanks to the Food & Drug Administration, the American medical community, Big Pharma, and Big Agriculture (GMO crops and pesticides ring any bells?). We have been thoroughly betrayed. Mad yet?
These movies before the forties are before my parents were married. So, I don't recognize most of them but now I am glad I got U tube to watch all the vintage movies 👍. I am addicted to the early movies and watch ad many as I can. The actors/actress are excellent and good looking. 🙂
I am hooked, have been watching this movie often! Great plot, lines, acting, whitty. This flick has it all! Total class without the dirt. Black and white films are King👑
These old black and white movies are the greatest. Love watching them without commercials, with great storylines and wonderful actors and actresses. This was one great detective comedy, loved it. Joe S
Surprising good movie Joan Blondell. Was very attractive, Melvin Douglas delivered. A great supporting cast. Good dialogue, action and chemistry.😊🎥📢🎶🎵🎶
I love the Melvyn Douglas - Joan Blondell movies. They were a terrific pair! They both delivered lines so uniquely and with so much personality and sheer cuteness. Always entertaining. And wonderful scripts in those days, so witty and original. Thank you for uploading this!
Funny movie with 2 great stars (Melvyn Douglas & Joan Blondell) from THE best year for movies: 1939. I've seen thousands of films & this is the 1st time I've seen this one. Glad it was available on CZcams! Thanks for making it available! Great supporting cast of Ruth Donnelly, Clarence Kolb, Donald MacBride & Don Beddoe. What a joy it is to also see this film from a TCM broadcast, with a couple of special TCM promos (especially a couple of them featuring TCM host Robert Osborne--he was far and away the best!) & other little features thrown in here after the film, too! I found out that this film appeared on Wed., Jan. 7, 2009, at 4 p.m. Later that night, TCM kicked off its Wednesday Star of the Month series of films spotlighting Jack Lemmon (with Phffft! from 1954 being the first one they showed that night at 8 p.m.) All very enjoyable!
Melvyn is so yummy. Donald Mcbride is one of my favorite actors. I loved it when the snake got out of its box and the two detectives shot it about five times. Only in the movies could this happen . Joan is always so there for fellow actors. Again we all love a great movie. Thank you. Arvis
I love all of the actors and movies from this era! They were great and with fantastic entertainment and dialogue, that held you spellbound from beginning to end !!!!
A fantastic film. Nicely paced. The women are quite strong in 1939. The 30's was really a great time in many respects. Nice clothing, really interesting society, with all the dancing and people. So much more human contact that we presently have.
Loved the ending to bits. You know, there should have been about a round dozen husband and wife detective team spinoff movies from this. It was just too good to stop at one.
Wonderful Movie. I grew up watching these kind of flicks and they still work. Joan Blondell and Melvyn Douglas were too funny/cute in this with some of the credit do to the great writing. A breath of fresh air in these crazy times.
Melvyn Douglas..... such a great character actor, his timing was perfect, loved his voice and mannerism... Wish his broadway performances were recorded. Bet he was great!
Classic films. Absolutely a fan! Always have been. I love original black & white productions. Actually, my children always said that I was watching Grey movies. So, I love these Grey movies. Melvin Douglas is a fave, as is Blondell. So many faves. Hope, Davis, Crawford, Hepburn, Bacall, Monroe, Russell, Grant, Day, Randall, and the list goes on. Thank you for making this movie available. Very wonderful !
I have a blind friend who plays in clubs all over Florida and his name is Ricky Williams I'm sending this this movie loved it and I'm sure he's going to love it too.
I was in a bad car accident when I was 32 and bed bound for a long time. The only channel I could watch without feeling stressed out was TCM. I loved this channel so much, that I had my boyfriend install a tv card into my computer, then he ran a splitter from our satellite dish into my computer so I could record movies right onto my hard drive. It was pretty great. This was 2003 and I was surprised he made this work.
Saw this on my recommends... I was curious so I clicked on it. Haha what a way to start a new decade. Happy 2020, everyone!! (It's currently 12.58 am, Jan 1st, 2020)
the movie was great.if only you knew January 1st that just two months later we would all be self isolating!! Thank goodness we have great movies to watch
@@larrywilson8742 yep, I know right? It's so surreal reading my original comment now. Never thought that we'd come to this point. Oh well, guess we'll just have to make the best of this weird crazy world that we live in and hope it'll get better very soon...
@@michaelsnider8611 yeah true but part of what also makes the world beautiful is the wonderful people that are in it. ;) (not saying this is everyone but there are still good people out there)
I just love Joan Blondell in this movie. I remember when I first saw her in, Here Comes the Brides, in the late 60's or early 70's, I had never heard of her before then, because I was a young girl. I always loved Melvin Douglas!
The Blondell sisters looked almost like twins, and both were gorgeous, and very good actresses. Great cast, very entertaining movie. Great to see Douglas in his prime.
I first saw Melvyn Douglas in “Ninotchka”, in art art house movie theater 40 years ago. Then I saw him in “Being There” in the ‘80’s. It’s so cool that we can see him in all these old movies!
Very rarely will I watch something 2x. My favorites Ill watch unlimited. But THIS movie I started again and kept watching again. Good Story and all the Cast were perfectly cast.
What an outstanding movie -- high-quality print, high-quality audio. Looks like the studio used half of Columbia's line actors, too. Dick Curtis (in uniform) at the beginning and the end. Lorna Gray as the nurse who pops into Blondell's room for a few seconds. Don Beddoe as one of the detectives. A couple more whose names I can't remember. Thanks, PizzaFlix!
I've always loved this film. I do miss Robert Osborn. One of my favorite films I'd " Mr. Blanding builds his dream 🏡 house in Connecticut!!!!!!! I know that's because I was born & raised in Connecticut!!! My grandfather was my favorite as a cop he climbed the ladder as a traffic cop & went all the way up the ladder of command to become the "chief of police", of New haven. & he only had a 6th grade education. I also luv old actors , no longer with us, such as Melvin Douglas!!!!! Thanks!!! Turner classic 🎥 movies !!!!!!!
The amazingly talented Melvyn Douglas (1901 - 1981) came to prominence in the 1930s after his first movie in 1931 as a suave leading man - a role best illustrated in the famous Ninotchka with Greta Garbo made in the same year as this film (1939). He won two Oscars both for Best Supporting Actor in Hud (1963) and Being There (1979) as well as a Tony Award and an Emmy. He was always in demand right up until his death sometimes making four or even five movies a year as well as appearing frequently on stage and on radio. His final movie Ghost Storey was released after his death.
Joan Blondell was an awesome actress. But I don't think she ever really got the recognition she deserved. As I don't think Ann Southern got recognition for her wonderful acting ability!!!
Hollywood put both of them in the backup roles when the first string was working on a current project.. If you could not get Loraine Day for the part you went to Joan or Ann.
I concur. There are many actresses and actors, thought of as being supporting players, whose craft was essential in creating some of the best Hollywood and independent films ever made. I always admired Joan Blondell (Rose Joan Bluestein) and Ann Southern (Harriette Arlene Lake).

How beautifully people dressed then. Now, we look like we're going to a pajama party every day.
Not even pajamas. They look quite fancy and clean on me - modern clothing is worse than that
