  • Bluegrass legends The Seldom Scene record a new version of their classic "Wait A Minute" for the Smithsonian Folkways album 'Long Time... Seldom Scene.' Chris Eldridge, son of founding member Ben Eldridge, talks about growing up with the band. Ben and former members John Starling and Tom Gray reminisce about their classic 1974 recording.

For more than four decades, profoundly influential bluegrass band The Seldom Scene has shared its undeniable talent, progressive repertoire, and creative spirit both in the studio and on stage. 'Long Time... Seldom Scene' features fresh interpretations of 16 oft-requested tunes and is the band’s first studio album since the GRAMMY-nominated album 'Scenechronized' in 2007. It’s a family reunion in all the best ways, featuring the current - and longest-running - lineup, joined by founding members Tom Gray and John Starling and guests Chris Eldridge, Emmylou Harris, and Rickie Simpkins.

One of the best things about living in the DC area in the 1970s was the dozens of times I got to see the Seldom Scene live. They were so much fun to watch and played off of each other so well. This is a great song but there were so many great songs in their repertoire - Rider, Old Train and so many more.

Oh my God! What memories this brings back. I was just learning to play Bluegrass in the 70's and listened to them all the time. I learned Bluegrass from Larry Smith of the group Keystone out of Brogue Pa. I'm 85 now and still playing. What memories.!

So many great times at the old Birchmere in Shirlington. Great musicianship. Great material. Great harmonies. Great personality (I'm lookin' at you, Mr. Duffey.) We watched them re-invent Bluegrass for a new generation and put DC at the heart of of "NewGrass" (with a big assist from Lee Michael Dempsey at WAMU). There was that night Linda Ronstadt rose from a table in the very back, and joined them on stage for a couple of tunes. So privileged to be part of it. RIP to all members who have left us, my condolences to their families. (And I'll remember one of my favorite members, singer-guitarist Phil Rosenthal.) My other faves: Sing Me Back Home, Rider, Muddy Water.

The Seldom Scene made this song popular long before Pederson's recording. i have three different recordings of this song by the scene that i like better than Pederson's versions. that said, i also love Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen version. i'm predominantly of irish decent and have been listing to bluegrass since the late 1940's when buuegrass and country music was called hillbilly music. lots of irish and scottish influence in bluegrass music, especially older blue grass fiddle tunes. love your traditional music but love your BEER BETTER. ken t., usa

    • @kent9311
      @kent9311 Před 7 lety +2

i stand corrected!!! you were referring to the seldom scene's recording of the song (wait a minute) WRITTEN by herb petersen and not his RELEASE of the song, sorry. i got my mouth in motion before engaging my brain. (it's the trump syndrome). johnny rivers was the first to release wait a minute in 1974. it's a good country music version that i enjoy. the scene recorded the song for their old train release in 1974. herb petersen released his song in 1976 and herb peterson invented the egg McMuffin. ha ha. i discovered that when i googled him and spelled his name wrong. eight more sentences and i've got the makings for a book. my best to you, yours, and dear old ireland. ken t., usa

WoW At nearly 83, the vocals just sound better every time I listen to the scene, as I was there when Duffey first put his vocals out for the audience to get a taste of his style of the music that would be the greatest in urban bluegrass music, now this was back in the summer of 1957, July 4th to be exact. And he went on to group another four music.ons to bring the greatest bluegrass band to the washington D.C. area. Well they can't be replaced, so I'll just have to be greatfull that I've got a collection of the all time gteatest. So to all the scene, my last words would be THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GREAT TIMES I ENJOYED TALKING WITH YOU AND LISTING TO YOUR GREAT MUSIC.. GODS SPEED TO ALL OF YOU. The ability to make the lyrics relate in such a personal sense depends on the performance, and this is a gorgeous one. Such a metaphorical, universal message in this song. Absolutely beautiful.
    chorus:
Wait a minute did I hear you say you're going far away again
Try to change it I can't take the lonely nights without your love
Out doin' the road get the music done and move along
What good does it do play your songs for her and hear her say
    (chorus)
You're rolling along, life's been good to you but even so
She comes to you late at night's the time you hear her say
    (chorus)
I'm waitin' for you thirty days and nights without a rest
I gotta hold on twenty-five to go to hear you say hey
    (chorus) repeat 3x

We have been long time Scene fans in all of their incarnations and even the side act "Chesapeake". Many a Tuesday night was spent in what was an old A&P Grocery Store in Alexandria, VA known as The Birchmere which The Scene was the foundation. It has moved to Del Rey band is now a legendary Bluegrass and Folk venue that I think would not exist without The Seldom Scene. They brought us great old traditionals like Old Train but were the first to cover the Beatles in the Bluegrass genre. Now Ben's son Chris is doing the same with the Punch Brothers. And then there were covers of great Dylan songs like "Boots of Spanish Leather". I just cant say enough about how much this band influenced my love for Bluegrass. To have all these past and current members singing here is amazing. Missing are the great Mike Audridge and John Duffy along with T. Michael Coleman and Moondy Kline. Sorry of I missed someone. And in the background making them sound sooooooo good was at first Billy Wolf and then my good friend Ed Solomon. Thanks everyone.
