    This brings back SO many wonderful memories. Listening to them as a teenager. My dad couldn't stand it. He only listened to and played traditional bluegrass. All of the festivals.. Lake Whippoorwill, Take it Easy Ranch, Watermelon Park. All gone now, just like Duffey, Mike Auldridge, and and John Starling. Gone but NEVER forgotten. Love them all! So blessed to have had their talent and their music in our lives.

    Gardens and Memories is actually a Starling original. In a catalog full of amazement, I think it's an overlooked jewel.
    I used to play in a regular poker game with Dan Tyminski. He found out I was a bluegrass fan/player (after I'd fawned over him, of course). He asked me who my favorite singers were. I said "You can't beat the Starling/Duffy/Auldridge trio." He paused, and said, "That's hard to argue with." Said Dan Tyminski.

    I especially liked Seldom Scene. They were excellent musicians. Unlike many Bluegrass bands they did not often play tunes I had heard many times before. Duffy acted like he was enjoying himself, not taking part in a religious event. I also listened to a lot of Newgrass Revival. Bands like these made more music lovers more receptive to bluegrass.

      Thank you and happy you are enjoying my videos of those old shows. They did indeed add some originality by playing a lot of (what today is called) 'Americana' and not simply jam-session bluegrass standards. But they could get down with the best of 'em on 'Little Georgia Rose' :) Be sure to watch the video here of the other (afternoon) set from the same day at this festival back in 1992. I was at this show and also taped it.But over the last 30 years they disappeared. I want to thank you for posting. The remark from the MC about The Scene "being the opening act for the Circuit Riders" came as a response to the fact that The Great Duffey had earlier during the Circuit Riders set came on stage while Terry Stanton was singing, with a long handled push broom and commenced to sweep the stage and push Terry's feet away from the mic with the broom. • @user-xj7px1mz1s
      @user-xj7px1mz1s  Před 2 lety

      When I first met them, as I recall, Ben was working for a government agency and Mike was a graphic artist with the Washington Star News, which later folded in 1981. That's when Mike went 'music full time'. If Ben later was also able to live well from the Scene it was a well-deserved musical life which landed him in the IBMA Hall of Fame. Musically excellent and a friendly individual, I hope Ben is well and pickin' banjo still in 2022.
      Thanks for watching the video. You may also enjoy the short video on this channel with Ben and Pete Wernicke doing a banjo workshop at one of the Grass Valley summer bluegrass festivals when the Seldom Scene were on the bill the same weekend as Hot Rize.

    • @SBrown-ov9lz
      @SBrown-ov9lz Před 2 lety

      I wasn't aware of Ben's professional carrier outside of bluegrass. I was aware of Mike's graphics work carrier but not in detail. I last communicated with Mike in texts some years ago and only a few years before his passing. Yes, I too hope Ben is still picking his banjo, he was my favorite of all the banjo pickers! Not sure you may have known Joe Val, of the New England Blue Grass Boys? Joe was my first influence in Bluegrass. He played in my home town of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. in early 70's. "GrandFathers Clock" was one of his many popular songs. Joe invited me, as I lived nearby in Annapolis, to have dinner with him and the band at the Birchmere, in Alexandria the night he opened for the Seldom Scene, that was the night back stage I met Duffey, and Gray but I don't remember who it was on the guitar. I think it was in 1982 or 83. I miss them all, my favorites!

    • @user-xj7px1mz1s
      @user-xj7px1mz1s  Před 2 lety

      If you're in the area you can probably find Ben Eldridge in Maryland. I don't know Joe Val. First met Mike in DC during a work trip related to some medical equipment at GWU in summer of 1977. Looked Mike up in the phone book or directory assistance from my hotel room and called when I was done for the day. Mike's wife said they were playing that night at the Birchmere and told me how to get there so I hopped a cab and went right over. Mike was very pleasant and invited me to come by for a Dobro lesson that Saturday morning at his home; went directly from there to the airport to catch a plane back home. Pretty memorable. It must have been another time that I was talking to Ben and learned about his profession and it stuck with me - a brilliant individual in more than just music. By then, I think, John Starling had become a physician and left the band to pursue his medical career. Afaik when the Scene first began in 1971 or 1972 they all had 'day jobs'. Got to see the Scene several other times at festivals and performances mostly in CA, including the shows you've been watching in Grass Valley, CA and the ones that I taped in 1992 in Santa Maria, CA. I met Jerry Douglas and Josh Graves in the Chicago area a couple years before that trip to DC. JD was 17 and on his first tour with The Country Gentlemen, then headed by Charlie Waller and with Ricky Skaggs on mandolin. We were all so young :)
