I know you have the Mrs that does a great job of shopping, do you find online auctions to be good places for material as well?

    I had bought a batch of silver online and it had a bunch of necklaces that were stamp 925 but were obviously gold plated. I was pleasantly surprised as to how much gold each of those necklaces had and surprised that the seller hadn’t pulled those out of the batch but instead included them for the same price as all the other silver. If I remember correctly it was necklaces from Italy, I think it had Milan stamped on it as well. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on more of that “silver” anytime.

    The silver nitrate crystals are purer than the remaining silver nitrate solution, there is even a purification method by recrystallization. I wonder if it were possible to somehow not dissolve these crystals or at least not mix them after dissolving with the rest of the solution to benefit from this side purification.

    The visual display of reactions underway and certain steps of the process (ie. the rendition of Sreetipsmans Fortress of Solitude [Mrs Sreetips being the one and only green crystal responsible for the construction] in this episode) are simply stunning. They are, surely, one of the most interesting displays of chemistry occurring in this galaxy by a sentient being, second only to, for instance, what is being done with the Large Hadron Collider.
    Disclaimer (and possibly opening the biggest cans of worms ever): it would be nice to know what the UAP are, so my remarks refer to non-inter dimensional traveling sentient beings.
    A montage of highlights from your past videos, I believe, may be in order.
    I do have a reasonably intelligent question about testing whether or not gold is in solution and how the stannous test determines the fact but I will search for the answer before blurting it out.
    Thank you Sir! for another ausome production.

    It would be nice to have a NO2 capturing setup to use for regenerating Nitric acid. It would reduce your nitric acid consumption significantly. I visualize some sort of wash tower - where the NO2 is exposed to distilled water and oxygen (atmospheric air should work) and then fed into a condensation column to make sure all the acid condenses.

    You know it's funny as many times as you've explained the filter technique, I just now realized that I've been trying to explain it to people for years in another scenario and for another reason. In this scenario it's actually to make it easier to remove said filtered material and make cleaning a filter/pump apparatus of said filtered material much easier. That's a fancy way of saying a fryer filter machine that gets abused by fryers that do a ton of hand breaded/battered frying 😂.

    I think I'm at the nine 23 minutes point where you talk about dissolving the Silver leaving behind the Gold foil as you call it ,and I agree that the gold plating stays in the same form that it was on the jewelry but flatten out. Kind of fasinating
    I had success wiping or really dissolving gold off of white ceramic electronic boards and the back of a large cathode ray l tube . I wonder if the gold could be dissolved off of the silver. To minimize the amount of solution laden with precious metal nitrates. . Five gallon buckets of solution and large glass beakers are less desirable inconvientt than a small beaker/ Pyrex jar
    Aqua Rega dissolves gold plating immediately so I think it could be done on silver base metal quickly then rinsed off.
    I will watch the rest of the video to see how you handle the dissolved silver

    Dear Sreetips
    Just as a suggestion
    You could melt down the part in first place and afterwards continue with the nitric boils.
    This way nitric should have a better chance to attack impurities in gold.
    Just something that I learned from you

    • @buggsy5
      @buggsy5 Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, there are at least two alternative attacks. The melting down and digesting in nitric acid is one.
      Another would be to cast the material up as an anode bar and refine the silver in a silver cell. The remaining slimes containing the gold would then need separate treatment to separate the gold.

Wouldn't it be better to add it once you've dissolved all of the metals, so that everything is in solution (including any lead), then add the H2SO4 which will drop the lead. You use AP for that. That is a mix of Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) with Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) the latter acts as an oxidator. H2O2 3% is sufficient but if you use a higher percentage it will go faster. In jargon they call this mixture AP (Acid Peroxide). You can put it in a plastic or glass beaker. A bubbler is not necessary but can speed things up a bit. I use a large plastic (detergent) bottle, then you can shake it after a while and it speeds up the release of the gold flakes. When you think all the gold has come loose, then you throw everything through a sieve, so the fingers stay behind in the sieve. If some gold remains on the fingers, you can brush or spray it off with AP or throw it back into the plastic bottle. You filter the sieved material (coffee filter or something similar). The gold flakes remain in the filter and the AP can be returned to the plastic bottle for further treatment. If you want to rinse/spray the sieve, I advise you to do it with AP and not with water. This way you keep the AP less diluted and you save space your stock pot. The gold in your filter (about 7 to 12 carats) can be sold or treated with AR (Aqua Regia) to almost 100% 24 carat gold.
      You can keep and re-use the AP and if you throw in a piece of clean iron, then the base metals will cement on that and can be filtered out, leaving you with 'clean' AP and the base metals seperated. The latter you can save (if it is a lot). You can also throw the total in your stockpot and process it later. Flushing it away in the sewer is very harmful to the environment because of the heavy metals.
      Goodluck!

    I’ve been watching for a few months now could someone like me a rage joe do this by just watching ur videos. I’m getting the process and the reciprocating 😂 have u ever dropped a beaker of solution. Sometimes I think for god sake don’t drop that and I can’t believe that little pearl of gold covered all that jewellery

    I'm not sure if you have ever done it, but could you do as comprehensive a showing of all the equipment you use? I was thinking about starting a side hustle of refining once I get the ability to do so, and was curious about what you use.

      Chris, I’ve included everything in my videos, leaving nothing out. But the first on my your list must be a fume hood. No way to do reactions safely without one.

    How does the nitric get to the silver if it's covered in gold that doesn't dissolve?

    Sreetips. Could this be safely done outside without a fume hood. Using a gas mask?

    Where do you clean you equipment? There must be residues in the beakers and such, do you have to do something extra to do this?
    How much silver er did you recover from this? Do you bother the recover the copper now?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  Před 2 lety +1

      Waste treatment. I recover all the silver. I recently purchased $500 worth of copper that should last me several years. Copper is very useful. But once it’s used in the recovery of precious metals, it then becomes waste and not worth trying to recover.

    • @JoSeeFuss
      @JoSeeFuss Před 2 lety

      @@sreetips I didn't know that. I saw how copper nitrate was recovered along with dilute nitric acid. Then copper was recover, I just thought if there was a way to remediate a waste stream, it would be worth doing.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  Před 2 lety +1

      That makes good video content, but for me it’s just not worth the time and effort. The last little 2.9g bead of gold that I recovered will probably go for $300 - that’s about 70 pounds of copper. When working with metals that go for tens of thousands per pound, one can’t justify wasting time on 4 dollar a pound metal. Sounds harsh, but I’m so backed up with my precious metals refining that taking time to recover copper (that’s plentiful and cheap) just don’t make no sense.
