Jazz has always been very intimidating to me, and it still is, but thanks to your videos now I know it's doable. I've watched hundreds of videos from different people on CZcams in English and Spanish and none comes even close to yours. All your teachings follow a very logical path , and your exercises seem hard as f***, but still doable if you put enough time and effort into it. Also, you never try to show off, while it is clear to all of us that you have the skills and knowledge for it. Thanks for all this great work.

Jared thank you very much for this systematic drill. Trying to learn fretboard and this is going to help hugely! Thank you!

At 19:30, should the phrase end on the '1 of Ab on fret 9'? Counting 3and4and from the C that starts the Ab part of the bar gets to me the Ab, not the Gb, or am I missing something? Great lesson btw, really good workout

Looking at your finger on the fretboard, it does look like your pinky lands on the Ab, whereas on the pictorial fretboard, it lands on the b7, just trying to think what it should be landing on

"If you can’t resolve forward by half step, resolve backwards"... just trying to understand the rules here... at about 19:30 in the video shouldn't the change from the Db note (on Dbmaj7) keep going 'forward' to the C note (on Dm7b5) instead of going 'backwards' to the D note? Great lesson, btw... thanks!

I'm a little unclear on the rules as well. I think what i heard was, if you are going towards higher pitched notes, you need to watch for intervals and jump maybe go down before you go up. Otherwise if you are moving towards lower pitched notes, you can must go to the next lowest pitch. And the rules, if I understood correctly are mainly to help start sounding musical and therefore help your ear internalize the next most musical move to make

@bl55 I believe one of the rules was "if you can go a half step up or a half step down then you can go either direction to resolve"

Thanks for asking! Yes, @ramilak below has it right. If you resolve by half step either direction then you can choose either one. That's just according to these guidelines, you can do anything you want, but rules like this help us get certain beneficial habits down - I like following them strictly until they are second nature.

I guess as you saw in the fmaj7 to fmin7 shift he did he went backwards. so to show the change you may have to go back and continue
