  • Let's make watercolours!!!
Here is my Etsy shop if you want to purchase my hand painted stones or paint buttons for that glittery watercolour! I post two times a week usually! I always give a heads up on my Facebook page before I post stuff😁
    etsy.me/2mUN6F6
    More already made watercolours
You should check out this Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/ca/shop/IUILE
I am adding my pay pal due to popular request ❀ think of it as an open guitar case and I'm singing to you. To contribute. To help me continue to do what I'm doing for you every week. Either way, I'm still promising to bring you as much content as I possibly can at this time😁

Thank you to anyone who has donated to my channel!!!
    Paint binder recipe
*1 cup distilled water( heat, don't boil)
*Just over 1/2 cup gum arabic
    *1 tbsp pure vegetable glycerine
    *1/2 tbsp pure honey
*4-5 drops of clove essential oil (preserves your paint and smells good too!)
Store it in the fridge in a sealed mason jar or container. Will last 3-4 weeks.
    Where can you buy pigments?
Eye Candy Pigments- 10 % discount
    eyecandypigments.com/RachelsR...
    www.etsy.com/ca/shop/iuilepig...
    glitterandcrafts4u.com/
You will need a non-porous surface to make your paint on. I use a glass slab. If you need to use a muller, I have been using a heavy coffee tamper.
    Artists spatulas
    Gloves
A really good Mask (that pigment is very bad for your lungs!!) N95 or better
For consistency make sure to add small amounts of binder to pigment and mix slowly u till you have a thick, but smooth cake icing texture. Not quite as thick. Let dry in paint pans on their own. Can be used right away if you really want!

This video and tutorial is extremely appreciated by many, am sure!
I would assume that learning the secrets in how to choose the pigments is just as valuable/important in the process as learning how to make the binder(?)
Just a thought/suggestion: You say purchasing the pigments is not a cheap proposition (especially for us lay people that are only going to make one small batch of the occasional color of paint since just a tiny pan lasts a long time and goes a long way.)
Anyway, Iuili seems to have a corner on the market as having the best pigments and the largestest array to choose from...but she also has a price tag....
Perhaps you could continue to get your pigments there, but instead of only making paint from that particular purchased supply....you could also break the pigments into small packets that you sale. It would be a win-win scenario for everyone! It would make that particular pigment available to those that otherwise couldn't afford or need that large quantity, and you'd get the amount you needed as well as help recoup some of the cost. (Heck, it might even make it where you could even lower the cost. I know being on Disability, I can't afford the typical starting price of $30 $40 for a very small bundle on Etsy. (I've never caught your store with any available, so I don't know what you charge)
But again, you could make it a win-win situation. Lower cost for your customers. And lower cost in your store... would yield a lot more sells....equalling more money for you in the long run.
Just a thought, for you to ponder â˜ș

I'm so glad your are feeling better! I, too, was getting worried. I love making watercolour paints. So far I have only made them for my own use, but I am still testing and experimenting. Pigments are definitely harder to obtain for a good price in Canada. IUILE pigments are absolutely spectacular, but the cost is prohibitive, to be sure!!! I have a couple of precious ones from Pearl Pleasures too, but they are also very expensive. Thanks for sharing your creativity, as always, its so delightful to hear you again.

Try Mad Micas web site, if you have not already. I noticed that Iuili has some paints made with their pigments. On Black Friday, they had a massive sale. I kind of want to say everything was half off, but I'm not positive that is accurate. Regardless, it was an excellent sale. Once you get on their mailing list, I have observed they do run sales on certain colors or new releases. Hopefully they ship to Canada.

    1. By pigment, do you mean mica powder? Or are there other options?
    2. When you are mixing binder & pigment what specific texture are you/we looking for to know it's "done"?
    3. What is best container and volume to keep them in.
    4. Where/how should the finished product be stored?
    5. How long can these be kept? ie; shelf life?
Thank you again for all you do and I am so glad you & your family are on the mend.

You don’t say how you determine the ratio of pigment to binder. Hi Rachel, I am watching your tutorial. I am trying to make my watercolors following you. I have made my binder and I have pearlex pigments, but what did you add on top of the pigments. Was that glitter dust?

  • @SillySeamstress

Yes, I have found a much more affordable source of pigments and color shifting micas. I don't have a particular source, but look at specialty auto painting supplies. If my sources are correct, that was the inspiration for the art world. I ordered a big box of samples from a supplier, and the samples alone will keep me busy for years. I'm not selling anything except finished working though. Enjoy!!

I am so glad that you and your family are better. I understand the Covid because we had it in our house as you did in yours and it is not fun, in fact it’s scary. Thank you for giving us this tutorial on making paints I have all the ingredients nowTo give it a try. I don’t want to make as much as you did I just wanna give it a try so I am going to cut your recipe in half. My question is when you mix the pigment and the binder, I see that you used your Metal spatulas as well as glass To thoroughly mix your paint. I don’t have that glass tool
and my question is is that very necessary to use it to mix paints, or what could I use in its place. Thank you so much in advance for answering my question. I do have another question because my pigments are not iridescent or glittery, So can I use a very very fine glitter powder with my pigments?

You could go to a thrift store and buy a large frame and then take out the glass and use that. If you are worried about the edges being sharp I would think the heavy, black Gorilla tape would be a good choice to cover the edges. Also you could take a glue gun and run glue around the edges. Hot glue rocks! I even used it in my garage to fix a spot where water was coming in under the garage door corner! My recommendation is a fantastic glass mat you will end up using for nearly everything. Tim Holtz, or Tonic, sells a glass media mat. It's a bit expensive but I use it all the time. It's a solid, heavy glass mat. And like a non-stick craft mat you can clean anything off of it. And it won't curl up on you. It's a great size and they even have a travel size.

Hi Rachel! I just mixed up some mica powder water colors, using your recipe!!! Can't wait to try it, they are beautiful. I have a question, though. Right now, the mixtures are the consistency of white glue and being stored in tightly covered paint pots. Should they be left to dry? Or is this consistency okay? Thanks for your help on this, I've never used water colors before.

    • @rachelsrockscanada
      @rachelsrockscanada  Pƙed 2 lety

That's awesome!!! If you are storing them in containers, you can just stir them up as use them that way but you will not need to use as much, anday need to dilute with water. But if you pour into paint pans and let them dry that glue like water on top will dry away. Then you can activate your paint pans with water whenever you need them.

Yes it can be used on anything you want. I just find it looks better on black background, so use black paper, or matter black paint as a base coat.❀

Yes, it solidifies. Then, using a small amount of distilled water will get it moving again while you're painting with it.
