Staghorn... Platycerium superbum Remount for a friend

- Stay Tuned as I've decided on a different technique for Elkhorn(Platycerium bifurcatum) which will hopefully be quicker and easier !
What is a technique ? ? ?
Just ONE way of doing something and certainly Not the only way.
The original plywood mount was overgrown and would only cause problems with the next shield that it would produce. A couple pallets provided us with all the backing boards that we needed.
Fred has gone home a happy boy with his baby able to grow on for another few years.

...ps... fumbling trying to thread the line and difficulty tying it off. There are better ways that I could have done it and I just didn't think it through properly. Oh well... still fairly good and the end result was worth it.
I 'should' have mentioned that the panty hose is temporary and needs to be moved lower as the new shield frond grows. It can be cut away before the shield frond grows over it as by then, the attaching roots will have grown and the hidden fishing line is all that's needed to secure it. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

I'm hoping to get the other Australian species... P. Hillii and P. Veitchii both grow in Queensland, but I'll not pursue the tropical species from SE Asia.

Beautiful staghorns, I'd love to know where I can get some different varieties.
Here in Australia we have 2 native Staghorns and differentiate by Stags being Platycerium superbum and Elkhorns being Platycerium bifurcatum.
In Tasmania where I live, even these 2 are vulnerable to frosts which is why I don't even consider the other species which are predominantly from SE Asia and Central America.
I'm sure other species and some hybrids are available in specialist nurseries. Their care is similar.

I only put a handful of spaghnum moss under the Staghorn when I mount them and further along I'll put tea leaves and chopped banana skins into the top as they naturally collect leaf litter, bird droppings, etc for nourishment.

Any advice for growing a superbum or a grande indoors?
Humidity 50%+ and good indirect light. If you hold your hand out near the P superbum and if you get a strong shadow with soft edges, you might be right. Temp above 7-->8°C( which is my winter temp in my greenhouse warmroom) so average indoors @17 ---> 18°C will be fine. Also try to keep them away from heat pump air flow as it's usually far too hot n dry !
Why not just tie it on with the pant hose or strips of soft cloth, which will rot by the time the stag horn has attached to the wood. We put a couple on a tree that way and they’ve been there for about 10 years and wrapped around the trunk.
I try and avoid anything that detracts from the natural appearance of the plant.
The panty hose band was only to keep it from moving even though the fishing line was holding it very securely. It will be cut away as soon as the new shield frond grows enough so that it doesn't interfere.
I have bits of pants hose hanging from the Logan Berry trellis and that's getting close to 10 years..... I'm still finding bits that I've missed.
I'm extremely fussy about any plastic or synthetic materials as they break down.
Styrofoam, plastic pots, shade cloth... I'm always picking up even the smallest pieces. I'm sort of stuck with it.
Renate. Wayne done the job for me :) i think he done a great job making sure it was secure. I guess there will be different opinions one how to do the job. i am more than happy with the out come.
I did consider 100% cotton strips or Hessian which I used on my mounted Bromeliads, but finally decided to keep everything to a minimum.
Since it's sheltered in a greenhouse, (tassie winters are not kind to Staghorns) it doesn't even need the panty hose.
Renata... please read my description as it refers to 'techniques' not being a mandatory 'one way'.
We have a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips via the net and all I'm doing is showing my perspective on the things that I do.

@@tassiedevil4928 Thanks for the reply. I’m sure Wayne knows what he is doing. Glad it all worked out well. I do agree though with Wayne about not using too many synthetic things. Once in a while I have to do it when I feel it’s the only way that will work for the time being. Beautiful staghorns anyway. I’m sure it will cover that board in no time and no doubt look more spectacular.
