    Thank you so much for doing a thorough job displaying this option to us all +TheTerrainTutor! For us who may not have the expenses required to make very detailed game mats as beginners (like myself) could certainly use this as a modifiable foundation to build upon over time and to essentially use immediately. You've got yourself a like and a new subscriber, sir! Thanks again! Your promoting this option is a big help (at least to me, hopefully to others as well!).

    The first thing that came to my mind was that its too bad the boxes dont have carrying handles. The system lends itself so well to transportation. I love the idea of a modular battle mat. With real 3D terrain on top of these they look great. No LOS issues with a woods edge because its printed right on there, regardless of the lichen you throw onto it. I never have cared for modular boards that much, the seam lines are a distraction for me. But unless the camera is lying, these seams are nearly invisible. Nice work!

    Just had to add, these would be GREAT for RPGs! DMs are gonna be grabbing this stuff up. But I would encourage them to lay their maps out and then stack the rows in piles before the game starts. That way when it comes time to set them up, you just start laying out each row one pile at a time. Otherwise set-up could really eat into game playing time.

    I'm tempted to get them but I've got a 3x3 ft battlemat from Urbanmatz.More expensive in comparision but you can spill whatever bevvy you've got, it wipes of without a problem.Also it rolls up pretty nice and hardly takes up room, I took it with me on vacation last year and was able to play small games of Kings of War and Tanks.Still, I'm going to keep an eye on them and if they'll ever do a Ruined City set then I'll prolly be sold.But it's a great review and like I said: "I'm tempted" ;-)

  • @Terranscapes
    @Terranscapes Před 7 lety +3

    Love the concept. The graphics are fun and perfect for roleplaying. Reminds me of a eurogame like Settlers or Carcassonne. Being double sided really provides a lot of variety. Nice. The cave system looks really great.
    But... I can't get past those dinged corners. My eye just pulls toward them and I can't look at anything else. I start hunting for more of them. And I saw quite a few of them. A lot really when you consider you've probably only laid them out once or twice. Having hung out with a lot of board gamers, quality of pieces is important both for aesthetics and feel in the hand.
    I think giving them a touch of super glue to the edges would be a must for long term use. But, I really think the manufacturer should take care of that before sale. Probably would add a touch to the cost but professional on their end worth it for the consumer I think. Doing it yourself risks getting the glue on the surfaces and for a full set, it's going to take some time. I actually would like to see them in a more durable material as well, like double thick card.
    Having said all of that, I do think it's a great idea and I love the style. A few tweaks by the manufacturer and they have a real hit on their hands.
    *** When doing reviews, don't be afraid to mention any drawbacks. Fleshes it out the review a bit so to speak. ;) ***

      Alright. You got me. I did miss the part about playing with them for a year. ;) I skip only tiny bits here and there to make sure I don't miss a section/topic but obviously miss a few sentences. I literally skipped just after you knocked the tile against your knuckles. Four sentences later - "We've been playing with them for a year now..." **grin** Knowing that, they are more durable than I thought.
      Hard to watch all vids, in their entirety. Next time I'll put it on in the background so I can see if my nit-pick is addressed.

  • @blakenoneya2597
    @blakenoneya2597 Před 7 lety +1

    I like the idea of this. I have one big issue with mats. It being that they always cut them short, and even just a small amount can make a difference when the game is specifically designed for a 3x3 or 4x4. Every mat we've played on was missing anywhere from half an inch to an inch. And if I'm paying 30-50 dollars, I want what I'm supposed to be paying for. I've heard many X-Wing players complain about it, as well as some Infinity, Malifaux, and WarmaHordes players. I may end up picking these up for my club. Thanks for showing these!

      Are there any mats that you do recommend to people? A new player in the area introduced us to some that are made here in the states that are pretty cheap compared to others. Not made out of the same material and much thinner, but still strong and durable. And from what we measured they are the proper sizes.

      No. I have played mageknight multiple times and the 1 thing that keeps it on the shelf more often than not, is the sliding and movement of the octagonal tiles. You would need some type of rubber gripping material underneath to stop it from moving/sliding every time u nudged or pushed it. Battlemats for me.

    • @TheAnon26

      Nah, dont think so. Mostly because I dislike cardboard (scuffs just drive me insane), the modularity is really obvious (the roads and rivers have weird layouts, forests and fields are all arranged in hexes), and because it features 3D terrain on a flat surface. If theyd just included rivers and roads, maybe some rubble, itd have been fine. But trees, ruins, mountains... that kind of stuff just doesnt work for me.
      Theres also the art style which doesnt do much for me, and battlemats have the advantage of being easier to set up and dampening dice rolls/saving metal models' paint jobs. :P

    Patron Post: So a correction on the video or should I say the info they gave you. I kickstarted the Coastal set and the Tundra set... There was no where there that the backers (At least for me) were in charge of the choosing of the tiles. It was one I believe on their personally message board. As a backer I had no say in the choosing what each of the sets were. I agree, the wastelands set is just that, a waste... to me. I would preferred the caves and tundra only. We did have a vote for specific tiles (Bridge tile), but not what they were (Tundra/Cavern/Wasteland...)
    However as the product itself, beautiful. I've laid it out a few times but I have yet to use it. I will be using it for my new D&D campaign coming up though. It should be fun.

    Hi Mel, you’ve probably tried this already and if so I would be interested to know if it works, but do you think it is possible to create a battle mat or modular gaming mat using carpet tiles? Thinking of getting some of the office style ones with a very short pile thickness in a neutral brown colour and randomly spraying or applying a bit of acrylic emulsions in various earthy shades to give a random appearance and then applying a light random spray with Blutak fast tack and a light dusting of flock before a final seal with a watery pva final coat to bind everything. Carpet tiles even if bought new are a lot cheaper than buying ready made mats and come in 1m or 2ft squares so would generally make a standard sizeed top with no cutting. And a few tester pots of emulsion and a bit of flock and I think you could make a decent base mat for around a tenner.
